Kathryn’s POV The Pack’s gates soon came into view, tall and foreboding, a testament to the place that once held my dreams—and shattered them. The iron bars were still the same, darkened with time, their jagged edges resembling the broken pieces of the girl I used to be. But I wasn’t that girl anymore. My boots crunched against the gravel as I stepped forward. The nostalgic scent of pine and damp earth hit me, familiar yet suffocating. My heart should have raced at the thought of walking back into the place where my worst nightmares had come true. Instead, all I felt was cold, burning purpose. Two guards stood at the entrance, their rigid stances betraying the tension rolling off them in waves. One of them—a burly wolf with a scar running down his cheek—narrowed his eyes. "State your business." I smirked, reaching up to lower my hood. My long raven-black hair cascaded down, and the instant my golden eyes met his, I saw the exact moment recognition hit. His lips parted. His pulse quickened. “L-Luna?” Luna. That word should have been mine. It should have meant power, respect, devotion. But he took it from me. And this fool had the audacity to say it like I was still that girl—the one who cried, the one who begged. "Don’t," I warned, my voice sharp enough to slice through the steel. "You lost the right to call me that when your Alpha threw me to the wolves." His throat bobbed. He looked at the other guard, who seemed frozen in place. Good. They should be afraid. I stepped forward, letting my boots click against the stone. "Open the gate." The first guard hesitated. "Alpha Darian—" I tilted my head. "Do you want to explain to him why you're lying in a pool of your own blood? Because I promise you, it won’t take much for me to make that happen." The guards exchanged looks, then scrambled to pull the heavy iron doors open. Cowards. I walked through without hesitation, stepping onto the pack grounds. And just like that, the air shifted. The moment I entered, conversations died. Wolves turned, their eyes widening as they took me in—like they couldn’t believe I was real. Whispers rippled through the crowd. "She’s back." "How is she still alive?" "I heard she killed three Alphas in the North." "Why would she come back after what he did to her?" I ignored them. I wasn’t here for their approval. I made it five steps before I felt it. That familiar, dark energy. It crashed into me like a storm. Deep. Commanding. Unyielding. A growl rolled through the air, low and dangerous. I knew that growl. Darian. The mate who rejected me. The Alpha who humiliated me. The bastard who walked away while I bled out on the ground. Slowly, I turned. He stood near the training grounds, dressed in dark pants and a black long-sleeved shirt that clung to his broad chest. His sharp jaw was clenched, his muscle ticking as his stormy blue eyes burned into mine. I should have felt something. A tug, a spark—anything. Instead, all I felt was rage. His fists were balled at his sides, his stance rigid. He looked furious. No—he looked unhinged. "What the hell are you doing here?" he demanded, voice thick with something dark and possessive. I smirked. "Miss me?" His eyes darkened. "Get. Out." I took a slow step forward. "That’s not how you welcome an old acquaintance, Darian." His growl deepened. "I don’t have time for your games, Kathryn." I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping to a whisper. "You should make time. Because I’m not here for you." His nostrils flared. "Then why the hell are you here?" I smirked, reaching up to trail a finger along the scar on my wrist—the place where his mark should have been. "Wouldn’t you like to know?" Before he could reply, another voice cut through the tension. A sickly sweet voice I hadn’t heard in years. "Well, well, well… if it isn’t the rejected little mutt." My body went still. I turned. And there she was. Serena. The she-wolf Darian rejected me for. Her platinum blonde hair was perfectly styled, her deep red dress clinging to her curves like she was parading herself as his queen. Her lips curled in amusement as she slid an arm around Darian’s waist, pressing against him. Anger clawed at my chest, but I kept my smirk in place. Serena’s gaze raked over me like I was filth. "Did you crawl back, hoping Darian would change his mind? That’s pathetic—even for you." I stepped closer, letting my smile widen. "Oh, Serena…" I cooed, voice dripping with mock sympathy. "I was hoping I’d see you again." Her nose scrunched in confusion. "You were?" I leaned in, my breath ghosting over her ear. "Yeah. I wanted to see if you still looked as desperate as you did that night you f****d my leftovers." The entire courtyard went silent. Serena’s face twisted with rage. Darian’s jaw tightened. And me? I just smirked. Let the games begin...
