Ramsay looked at him strangely. “Yes, Sergeant,” he said. “Sir! Lieutenant Kennedy!” A young ensign approached the Rangers, his face shining with enthusiasm. He looked from one man to another, searching for the officer. “Yes, ensign?” Kennedy said. “I’m Kennedy.” “General Murray sends his best respects, sir,” the ensign stumbled over the words he had memorised, “and could you try to find the French order of battle and send a report to him, sir, as soon as is convenient.” Kennedy nodded. “Pray to convey my respect to General Murray,” Kennedy said, “and inform him that I shall do my utmost to fulfil his orders.” He put a hand on the ensign’s shoulder. “Now repeat my words, ensign, so I know you have them correct.” The ensign nodded and repeated the words before Kennedy allowed him to ru
