Chapter Three (Part One)

I can’t believe Darius backed out last minute.  There was an uncomfortable energy within the room. Caeli sat next to Marcellus, keeping as still as him. King Vitus and Queen Cassiana sat at the head of the table, Prince Maximus sat to the left of the king, Marcellus to the right of the Queen. King Kitan of Chishka sat opposite King Vitus with his guards surrounding him.   “My friend, do you not trust me?” King Vitus seemed genuinely offended.  “You I trust, though Adyta is an open city and many may come and go.” King Kitan seemed wary. “In the past two weeks I have had no less than fifteen spies discovered within Chishka. Static filled the air. I’m definitely leaving again. “Kitan, I was not aware that the situation was so serious.” King Vitus shook his head. “Do you have any inclination as to whom is ordering this?”  “None.” King Kitan shook his head. “I have good relationships with all surrounding kingdoms and Adyta removed the only threat we knew of.”   King Vitus sat back for a moment. “Forgive me, Kitan, but I am unsure why you have asked for this meeting. I assumed it was to ask for my troops, but if the enemy is unknown, I do not know why you would come. Would this information not have been easier sent by messenger? Why leave your kingdom under such a troubling time?”  “To warn you, my friend.” King Kitan responded. “All fifteen were found attempting to steal the knowledge you had gifted us.”  “You believe Adyta is the true target?” Queen Cassiana was stoic.   “He believes they have already infiltrated us.” Marcellus stood. “My king, for everyone’s safety I suggest locking the city down. We will cancel the celebration tonight.”  “General, calm yourself.” King Vitus sighed. “We have had no reports of suspicious visitors, nor have we had any attempts to obtain our knowledge. I believe we are safe.” He addressed his gaze to King Kitan. “However, as a precaution, we will increase our night patrols and place more guards around areas where trade is high. I assume you have already done the same, friend?” The knowledge we gave? Paskoin knowledge? But it’s much more advanced. I mean, the clothes alone almost collapsed Adyta, or so mother said. Many of the residents are still waiting for housing updates to receive electricity. Mother said the materials, not the knowledge, are the hindrance. Could others harness the materials faster? Marcellus said they had to ease their allies into leaping advancements. Could it be someone we battled? Paskoins didn’t fight, father said that’s why they were invaded so easily. They had no weapons. Why want our secrets? Caeli looked to Marcellus, a troubled look upon his face. My king, how can you remain so calm at such a threat to us? Paskoin knowledge is dangerous within the wrong hands. Little one, are you reading my thoughts?      Caeli pretended to not hear Marcellus’s thoughts. She stared at Prince Maximus, who was sitting with his head bowed.        My prince…        It’s my birthday. I made father promise he wouldn’t send any of you away on my birthday.       He’s not.      But this is worse than just an ally under threat. Adyta is in trouble.     I will protect it. Marcellus and I will never allow anything to happen.    “I say this with respect and love for our friendship, Vitus, do not trust anyone.” King Kitan held a gaze that sent chills down Caeli’s spine. “Whomever this is, knew exactly where we keep the secrets you share. Only a few select people, that I thought I knew for years, knew their location. You are not safe, my friend. Please be careful.”     “Thank you, Kitan.” King Vitus nodded. “General, please enact my requests and send a party of your best to escort King Kitan and his men home.”    “That is not necessary.” King Kitan waved his hand. “We arrived with no issue. Your men have just arrived home. Allow them to rest.”     “As you wish, friend.” King Vitus stood. “Would you wish to stay? It is my son’s birthday and we are holding a great feast.”      “I must return home.” King Kitan declined. “Thank you, my friend, and stay safe.”      “I will escort you to the gates.” King Vitus stated. “And it is I that must thank you, for ensuring Adyta remains safe. I am deeply grateful.”      Caeli stood and approached the prince.      Your father is still holding your party.      Adyta’s in danger, Caeli. The Prince stood, refusing to meet her gaze. He shook his head as he walked away.  What’s my birthday matter now? *   Tia finished cleaning Larissa’s wound and placed new bandages. “I still can’t believe you just missed the wolf.” She shook her head. You can tell me the truth. I promise I won’t tell the others.    Larissa sighed. She focused her desire for privacy. Darius and Caeli were fighting. I kept picking up on their anger and sorrow.       Sorrow?      We’re all still hurting from the plague and the practically two years we spent apart. Larissa closed her eyes. I thought Caeli would bring us back together, but yesterday was a disaster.      It was your first day together. Caeli’s been gone forever and Darius had been a ghost too. You guys just need time to get to know who everyone is now.     We may be too different.     Tia grabbed Larissa’s hands. You four have a friendship unlike any other. Look at what you already survived. The plague...Tia’s cold tear wet Larissa’s knee.     Larissa pulled her into a hug. Sssh, sis. I’m sorry I made you think of that. You’re right, we just need time. Larissa forced a smile. “Today is Prince Maximus’s birthday. Merriment fills this day. It will be better.” Larissa wiped Tia’s tears away. “Thank you, sis.”     “What’s on the agenda for today?” Tia sniffled.   “I am going to join Bella in the shop with Caeli. Camilla and Sabina are going to stay here and work on the farm with your brothers.” Larissa answered. “And if you don’t leave now you’re going to be late to class.” “I’m going, I’m going.” Tia chuckled. “See ya later, sis.”    Larissa sat on her bed for a moment, attempting to ignore the burning throb in her shoulder. She held the small glass vial in her hand. Darius said to drink one twice a day. I wonder what it is. And the way the temple was set up, all white and weird smelling. What has he done to that place? Larissa opened the vial and drank. She cleaned her dagger and sighed. I need to be more careful. These kids need me. Father would be disappointed.     Larissa munched on the chocolate Darius had given her. ‘To help the pain. Don’t eat more than one at a time.’   It’s bitter, but I do like it. Larissa practically inhaled the piece. What is that flavor?  Larissa quickly began her house chores, glad to see that her siblings had done most of their own. I was blessed with wonderful siblings. She popped three more pieces of chocolate.   She made her way to the pastures, watching as their strong horses galloped through the fields Larissa’s family had been the best breeders for generations, and it was her responsibility to keep that tradition. She called Aura over, her raven coat shimmering almost blue under the sun’s rays. Aura had been born on Larissa’s birthday. Larissa’s father was ecstatic to discover that Aura had also been born with amber eyes, as it was seen as a sign of good luck. ‘A gift from the gods’ He had called her.    She finished grooming Aura then hopped on her back.    Are you certain you can ride, Rissa?     Of course, sweet girl. Us flying together is the only thing that’ll make me feel better.     Are you not going to your shop today?     Not quite yet, there is something I wish to try. Would you like to go faster?     Of course.      Then run.      Aura rushed toward the fence. Larissa clasped Aura’s mane in her hands, careful not to cause her pain. She closed her eyes, feeling Aura’s energy pass into hers. The rushing wind tingled her skin. Larissa collected the strength from the wind. In her mind’s eye she visualized it as a light, passing it from her and into Aura. Seeing as it swirled through Aura’s body.       Faster.        The wind roared, dulling the sounds around them.       I trust you.       Larissa was practically hugging Aura. She could feel each brush of Aura’s hooves against the earth, as if it were her feet; similar and yet different to how the earth felt on her own skin. She felt Aura’s breathing as if it were her lungs and their hearts seemed to be synced.  The moment they leaped a new feeling overtook Larissa’s senses. It was a moment of suspended bliss, the quiet roar of the wind silencing everything. Suspended in a moment of quiet peace, under the sun; free. Larissa gasped as they hit the ground. Aura happily trotted in a circle, while Larissa struggled to maintain her grip, as her energy dissipated from Aura and drained from her.  Is that a new power? Are you alright? Larissa steadied herself. I guess that required a great deal of energy but I am fine. Let’s continue. Okay. Larissa rode for a bit, though her mind began to fog.  Are you alright, Rissa?  I think we should take a break. I must have over done it more than I previously thought. I’ll be fine but I should rest. She carefully dismounted and left Aura in the community pasture.  “There you are.” Caeli eyed her shoulder. “How is it?”  The fog in her mind grew heavier. Her limbs felt heavy but the throbbing in her shoulder she no longer  felt.   “Fine.” Larissa shook her head. What’s going on with me? Was it the liquid? Maybe something was in the chocolate somehow? “How are things here? Any closer to your goal?”  “After the spoils of battle I only need ten millenara.” Caeli beamed. She’s so close to getting her property. She’ll finally get away from her parents. But...something’s off. As Larissa’s eyelids grew heavy, a violet light began to emit around Caeli. A feeling of guilt and fear overwhelmed Larissa. “Sissy, what’s wrong?” Bella grabbed Larissa’s arm. “Rissa!” A heavy feeling filled Larissa’s chest as her eyes grew heavier. How’d I end up on the floor? When did I get on Caeli’s lap? Why am I so tired?  “Rissa, how much did you eat?” * Darius had just been to the shop, searching for Larissa before she came. He hadn’t given Caeli a chance to talk with him, only wishing to check on Larissa. Caeli had seen him rushing from the gathering crowd when Bella had squealed. Larissa fumbled with her pack before finally managing to open it. She handed Darius a glass jar. Darius examined it for a moment before sighing and shaking his head. “Rissa, I said eat one piece when you’re in pain. There’s at least four pieces missing in here.  “Is she okay, Dari?” Bella whined.   “She’s fine, Bells.” Darius patted her head. “It’s just a side effect from taking too much of a new medicine.” “Isn’t that bad, Darius?” Caeli’s worries grew.  “Not with this.” Darius chuckled, a smile Caeli hadn’t seen in years warmed his eyes. “She’ll just sleep the day away. I’ll take her back to the hospital.” “I’ll help.” Caeli stated. “No way she can be placed on a horse and two supporting her will be easier than one.” “Yeah, I wanted to talk to you anyway.” Darius grabbed under Larissa’s shoulder. “Can you stand, Rissa?” Larissa tugged onto Darius’s arm as he and Caeli helped her to her feet. Caeli slid her arm around Larissa as Darius did the same. Larissa slid her arms around their shoulders. “Darius, I really like this stuff.” “Yeah?” Darius chuckled. “Me too.”  Darius, what did you give her?   Darius rubbed his temple momentarily. It’s a medicinal plant. It can do a lot of things, depending on the strand you get, but the one I gave her is really good for pain. I proportioned it appropriately, however she ate more than she should have. But like I said, she’ll just sleep it off.    Is it safe?  Very, no side effects beside an increase in appetite and sleeping, although some strands can actually increase energy. How did you discover this? Darius gave Caeli a devilish grin. “Let’s discuss more within the hospital walls. I’m getting a headache.” Caeli awed at the gleam of the temple walls. They were no longer marble, but a smooth white stone. A strange smell filled Caeli’s nose. “What is that?” She asked. Darius gestured toward a room. “What’s what?” He asked, opening the door. A bed lay in the middle of the room, white sheets, blankets and pillows lay upon it. A white, crystal clear window allowed sunlight to fill the room.  “Everything.” Caeli asked, noting a personalized restroom in the room. Running water and electricity are such a precious commodity here. How is he able to waste them on personalized rooms? The supplies take years… “Well, the walls are cement, that smell, I imagine bothering you, is from sterilized cleaners.” Darius explained, he and Caeli helped Larissa onto the bed. “The facilities? That’s for privacy for the sick.” Darius grew quiet. “Remember how terrible it was? Everyone was throwing up on each other...people would die on top…” Caeli gently placed her hand on Darius’s back, expressing that she knew exactly what he was going to say. “This is magnificent, Darius. Anyway, tell me more about that plant."   “Ah, yes, it’s the very same plant that makes up our clothing.” Darius beamed. “I learned, from a book, of their medicinal properties.”  “But...my parents and the council were the first ones to introduce it for clothing and such." " Why not mention medicinal uses?" Caeli shook her head. Why lie? “I imagine they thought it was too great a medicine.” Darius sighed. “After all, it was their private garden where I managed to discover these new strands.” The garden. “You snuck into the garden?!” Caeli was both terrified and impressed. “I couldn’t even manage to do that! Are you insane? Darius, they would’ve killed you."  “Sometimes you have to be willing to risk even your own life, Cae.” Darius looked to the city. “If you wish to improve the world in which you live.”  “I imagine these improvements are how you obtained your promotion.” Caeli stated. “Congratulations, by the way.” “Thank you.” Darius smiled. “I did study hard.” Larissa yawned loudly, her head colliding onto a pillow. She pulled the blanket over her and curled into it. “These are sooo soft.” Caeli chuckled.  “I’ll pass your appreciation on to the cleaners.” Darius smiled. He seemed to study Larissa a moment before addressing his attention to Caeli.  “How was the meeting this morning?” Darius asked. “I apologize for missing it. I had some business of my own.”  Since he was supposed to be there, I’m sure it’d be fine to tell him. After all, Caeli admired the temple's updates once more. This place could definitely be a target. She ensured Larissa was asleep.  “King Kitan informed us of spies attempting to steal the knowledge we gave him.” Caeli wasn’t going to dance around the truth. “King Vitus is increasing security around the ports and in town.”  “Probably here too.” Darius shook his head. His smile had turned to a frown. His eyes met Caeli’s with a fierce gaze she’d never seen him possess. “Are you a guard?”  “I have yet to be tasked with such a role.” Caeli answered.    Darius clasped his hands behind him as he paced the floor. “Cae, please do me the courtesy of not entering my brain while I ponder something.”    “Got ya.” Caeli nodded, not wanting to see that look in his eye again.      Caeli watched him pace for several minutes.    What is he thinking about? He’s so tense, but focused.    She looked to Larissa, resting peacefully wrapped in her blanket. The sun’s rays illuminated her face, her strawberry blonde hair almost glowing. Her small, muscular frame lay outlined in the thin blanket. In another life, I’d have you as my wife. Caeli loved Larissa. She was stubborn and fierce but so very kind. She raised her siblings as best she could, kept the farm and the shop going. You’re amazing, Rissa, you know that? Had you the chance of your dream, you’d be the apprentice; not me.     “Cae.” Darius’s quiet force drew her attention. “I would ask you to guard the hospital, however, I am sure Marcellus will be sent here and the councils’ residents will need a good warrior. You know they won’t allow any soldier near it, per their agreement with the king.”   “You think they’ll come after the council?” Caeli couldn’t fully understand. There’s nothing there. Unless... he thinks they have more secrets?   “I am sure they will.” Darius gave her a cold, determined stare. “I can’t explain it all, I am not allowed per order of the king. Some of what I already told you could land me in a boiling pot. I will continue to gain permission to share more, but if someone comes to steal it; they could destroy Adyta.” Darius paused a moment, taking a breath. “It’s important, Cae.”   King Vitus ordered his silence? What could the council have that could destroy Adyta?   Darius placed his hand on Caeli’s shoulder. That fierce look and a determined smile lit his face. “Do you think you’re ready to defend your home?” Darius asked in an easy yet demanding way.          “Always.” Caeli answered. *  Larissa woke to long shadows of an ending day. The strange stench of disinfectant forced the fog to part in her mind. She sat up, realizing it was well past afternoon. What time is it? Why am I back in the hospital? Oh gods, I have to go get Aura! Larissa set her feet upon the temperate floor.   “Careful.” Darius’s voice startled her. “You should drink something first. And you definitely need to eat. Also, don’t just bolt up on your feet. You’ll pass out.”   Larissa grabbed at her thundering heart. “Don’t scare me like that. Were you watching me sleep? Creeper.”    “I’ve been checking on you every half hour or so.” Darius answered, handing her a glass of water. “How ya feeling?”        “Thirsty.” Larissa chugged the cup. “What time is it? What was in that chocolate?” “A new medicine.” Darius answered. “Plant-derived, completely safe. But ya eat too much of this strand and it knocks your ass out. How’s your shoulder?”  Larissa slowly nodded, the fog in her brain taking hold once more. She glanced at her shoulder, realizing that she felt no pain. “It’s fine. It hurt so bad this morning.”  “Power of the plant.” Darius grinned. “You think you can make it home okay? I have Aura in the temple’s pasture. If you hurry, you should still have time to get ready for the prince’s party.”   Max’s party. I have to get his present wrapped. And I still have to get ready.  “I think I’m okay. Just foggy.” Larissa stood. “Thanks Darius.”  “Of course.” Darius nodded. “But Rissa, please don’t eat more than one at a time. Can’t have you sleeping every day away.”  “You shouldn’t have made it taste so good.” Larissa chuckled. “You know I have a sweet tooth.” Larissa’s stomach growled. I slept right through lunch.  “Here.” Darius picked a plate off the counter. “I made this for ya.”    Larissa took a sandwich from the plate. She noticed the red of the jelly. There’s no way he actually remembered. She took a small bite of the jellied sandwich. “By the gods,” She almost moaned. “You remembered. This is so good. How fresh were these strawberries?” She took a large bite.  “Picked them from the garden this afternoon.” Darius answered. “And of course I remembered.” He chuckled, opening a drawer and retrieving a rag. “You always made a mess eating it.” He tossed the rag to her.   She chuckled and wiped her face. “I’ll take this to go.” She said. “I really have to get dinner ready for the kids and prepare for the party. You will be there, right?”    “Of course.” Darius answered. “See you in a few hours.”     Larissa walked the now unfamiliar halls of the hospital. It truly doesn’t seem like a temple anymore. She turned toward where she recalled the pasture being. Upon turning, the temple walls took hold once more. She finished her sandwich and  rushed to the pasture.     My head is still foggy, but at least I’m not in pain. I can’t believe he remembered my favorite sandwich. Maybe we really haven’t changed that much.   Aura rushed toward Larissa, whinnying in delight.   Hello, my sweet girl. I’m so sorry if I worried you. Are you positive you are well, Rissa. I’m fine. Just ate too much medicine, but it’s okay. It’s a plant. Darius said I’m fine. Are you ready to go home?  Of course.   Larissa mounted Aura. Larissa studied the position of the sun as they rode through the town. It should be about five o’clock now. If I start dinner immediately I should have time to get ready.   Larissa arrived home, placed Aura in the pasture for her evening graze and turned to her house. She admired the twin cherry blossoms her father had planted the day he and her mother got their land. The sunlight sparkled upon the vibrant pink petals. It was then she noticed smoke rising from the chimney.  What are the kids up to?   She entered the house, Bella and Camilla rushing her with a hug. “Sissy, we were so worried.”  “I’m fine.” Larissa patted their heads, noting Camilla had pulled her chestnut hair into a bun; as to distinguish herself from Bella. “Darius gave me a new medicine and I didn’t listen to what he said. I should have. Now, who’s got a fire going?”   “Tia’s making dinner.” Sabina stood from the couch. “After, I’m going to take the boys to the spring for their baths.”  “Oh.” Larissa nodded. “Well thanks girls.” “Are you going to the party tonight?” Bella asked.  “Did you get Prince Maximus a gift?” Camilla pressed.  My twins. Must you always double question?   “Yes to both of you.” Larissa kissed each of their foreheads. “I’m going to go help your sister. Will you two go prepare the stables ready for the night?” “Yep.” The girls ran out the door.  Larissa walked to the kitchen. Tia was hard work at alternating between cutting apples into slices and stirring the stew she was making. For a moment, Tia’s dirty blonde bun and focused face, forced a memory of their mother to flash within Larissa’s mind.  Tia paused a moment, a single tear rolled down her cheek. “Do I really look like mama right now?” Larissa slowly nodded, swallowing the knot in her throat. “You always look like her, but with your hair up like that...and you make the same exact face she always made.”    Tia smiled, tears glistening her crystal eyes. “Then I’ll be just as beautiful.” “Of course.” Larissa smiled. “I’ll finish the apples, you focus on the stew.” *  Caeli forced her sword up, blocking Marcellus’s blow. He kicked at her stomach. Down. Marcellus seemingly lost his balance. Easy. Marcellus landed softly on the cushioned floor.    “Nice try.” Caeli offered Marcellus her hand.  “Your mental strength has greatly improved.” Marcellus grabbed her hand. “Best we finish now. You should prepare for the party.”   “Prince Maximus doesn’t wish to party.” Caeli sighed. “I’m not sure he’ll actually be there.”    “His father would not allow him to miss it.” Marcellus chuckled. “Give him my best regards, I have the first night’s rotation. Oh yes, tomorrow Liber wishes for you, Darius, Larissa and Prince Maximus to join us for dinner.”   “I’ll make sure to tell the others.” Caeli nodded, backing from the training grounds.   “See you tomorrow.” Marcellus waved her off. “Have fun, little one.”    Caeli admired the stone buildings around her. They seemed to illuminate the golden rays of the sun, lighting the city in a way Caeli had only ever seen in Adyta. She slid her hand against the smooth stone as she walked the familiar roads. I have truly missed this place.   There was the smell of bread wafting through the streets. Horses ran and played in the numerous pastures throughout the city. Children giggled as they chased each other. Many shops were setting up for the celebration tonight. When it's a citizen's birthday, the king invites them to dinner. When it’s a royal's birthday, the entire city is paid extra and everyone is invited to party. It’s the only place that does it. Even King Kitan thinks King Vitus is nuts, but that’s just the kind of man he is. I never want to leave Adyta again.  Caeli soon left the inner city, edging closer to the springs and countryside. There was one place she wanted to see. She stopped at her destination. Blooming cherry blossoms lined a winding path, almost forming a tunnel of pink and gold. At the end, the light of a clearing.  Home.  Caeli began running down the path, bursting into the clearing. The wind rushed to meet her. She twirled in the warm sun and gently settled among the grass. She stretched against the earth, sighing with delight. I’ll have my garden right here. And my house right in the middle. Caeli closed her eyes. I’m so close now. A few more big hunts and I can finally leave that f*****g hell. *
