There was no sign of human life anywhere outside of the main school building. It was eerie but having Matt with me made it less frightening. Or rather, I was with him. I couldn't believe that he planned on going out on his own at that time of the night. He was fearless and always nonchalant about certain situations. It was a charming personality trait of his that I found my heart beating rapidly for. The fear I felt vanished to be replaced by a warm feeling.
The iron gates were left opened because there was no adult there who could close them. Not that they really needed to be. The island was secure and safe from the outside world and there were no wild animals about. That was why the students were able to walk about without much supervision.
