46 Caroline knocked on the door of Detective Superintendent Derek Arnold’s office and waited for him to call her in. Once she was inside, she sat down on the chair in front of his desk and explained the situation to him. She’d been amazed he hadn’t called her in before now, and didn’t know whether that was a good thing or not. Too often in policing, things went on behind closed doors and plans were put into action, and the last people to find out were those who were most closely affected. ‘Either way,’ she said, coming to the end of her explanation, ‘we’re pretty certain one of two things will happen.
