Chapter 5

At 10:00 the next morning, the Moretti family convened an emergency meeting. Reporters crowded outside the estate, and the statement from the conference room would be broadcast live to the press. Dante sent someone to pick me up. He said it would all be over as soon as I issued a clarification. When I arrived, Elena was seated beside him with red-rimmed eyes. The elders of both families occupied opposite sides of the long table, and the red lights on the cameras were already glowing. Dante pushed a prepared statement across the table to me. It said that he and I had never been in a romantic relationship and that everything had been a one-sided misunderstanding on my part. It also stated that I had deliberately leaked the private material out of jealousy, hoping to use public opinion to sabotage his marriage alliance. If I signed it, the Moretti family would take no further action against me. "I didn't leak anything." I placed the statement back on the table. "Every account involved traces back to you, and you're still going to deny it?" "Elena leaked it. She's living in the penthouse now. Check the building records, the upload time, and the computer login history. You'll know the truth." Dante stared at me coldly. "Elena is about to marry me. Why would she ruin her own reputation?" He had already decided I was lying without even bothering to investigate. Now that I refused to sign, Dante turned to the cameras and delivered the clarification himself. "Sofia and I were never in a relationship. We have known each other for many years and, as adults, maintained a consensual arrangement for a time with no commitment from either party. "I never promised to marry her, nor did I ever make her any promises about our future." The conference room was so quiet that I could hear the cameras running. Dante pushed the statement toward me again. "Admit you leaked the information and apologize. Then this ends here." Leaning against him, Elena coaxed softly, "Sofia, as long as you admit your mistake, neither Dante nor I will blame you." Staring at them, I found the entire thing absurd. I picked up the microphone from the table. "Dante and I did sleep together for six years, and I lived in that penthouse for that long." Sharp breaths rippled down both sides of the long table. "I once thought it was love. Unfortunately, it wasn't. "As for who leaked the material, it wasn't me. I won't confess to something I didn't do, no matter how much pressure the Moretti family puts on me." I looked straight at Dante. "Whatever this was between us, it's over. I'm not asking him to marry me." I paused, then added calmly, "I'm the one leaving him."
