31By the time she reached the ridge, the lull had come to its end. People stood in back yards and on verandahs, looking down into the morass of the Park. Some had started along the trails. None of them were human. Lael let enough of herself be seen to attract their attention and retreated to the lagoon. The circle had, in places, blown away or dissolved into the marsh, but enough remained to suit Lael’s needs. She stopped in its centre, shifted to solid matter and waited. A curtain of light washed over the treetops; beautiful, glimmering sheets that vibrated with the force of life. Life that came from the unrelenting pursuit of human spirit flesh. Shades of colour brightened, flared and faded to assume new colours. The leaves on the trees burnished with golden hues and brilliant greens
