23‘Why exactly are we on this boat instead of driving in air-conditioned comfort?’ Anthony stood, as casual as Rick had seen him so far—except for the state of sleepy scruffiness in their dream—dressed in cargo pants, long-sleeved t-shirt and hiking boots, a cap pulled down low to shade his eyes. He didn’t look too good, with dark circles under his eyes and terse lines around his mouth even though he appeared relaxed, propped in the corner of the wooden bench seat, the side railing and the wall behind him. The ferry rose and dipped with the heavy swell of the bay, listing precariously at times to the side only to right itself on the crest of a wave and then list again in the other direction. In the main cabin of the ferry, the bobbing effect had clearly delineated daytrippers from locals.
