O.B. sat in a booth in an out-of-the-way corner at Charlie’s, waiting for Chuck to appear. Even though the Bolts had won, he felt terrible. On their first full day together as a couple, O.B. had had to lie to Avery about where he was going after the game and why he probably wouldn’t be home for dinner. O.B. had made up some story about having to have his teeth cleaned. Avery hadn’t seemed suspicious or even curious. He’d just said he’d see O.B. later and left the ballpark. He’d said that since O.B. wouldn’t be coming home, he’d return to the studio to edit the game tapes and prepare his news report. The catcher checked his watch. Maybe the kid wasn’t gonna show.
