Avery’s Pov
I sit on the dungeon floor, my ripped dress barely shielding me from the cold. The dungeons are colder than the houses because of how high they are built, but the cold is the least of my worries.
It's been a long twenty-four hours. What started as a normal day has taken a left turn.
“I miss you, Papa,” I whisper, staring at the clouds. It is almost dawn, and I have not slept at all.
“I miss you so much it hurts. You were right all along. Evans never loved me. You saw it when I was too blinded by love to notice.”
I mumble, my tongue touching the tear that lands on my lips as I try to moisten them. I bring my knees up and hunch over so my head can rest on them. I stare at the clouds, hoping the moon goddess will free me from this misery.
“There she is.” His familiar voice booms, making me jerk awake.
I rub at my eyes, exhaustion weighing me down. I look out the window and see the sun already up.
How long have I been sleeping? I wonder.
“Hello, sleeping beauty. What a surprise to see how you can so comfortably sleep after committing such a grave offense.”
“How could you, Evans? How could you?” I ask, voice shaking. “You saw everything. You know your father is lying.”
“Well,” he begins, “I saw what I saw, and I choose to interpret it however I want.”
“I love you, Evans. You are my mate. How can you hurt me like this? You stand and watch my father die over an allegation. You are just like your father, evil, cruel, and despicable. I hope you…”
“Enough.” He yells, and I flinch.
“It is either you or the throne. And you know I will spill blood to sit on that throne. I do not care whose blood it is.”
“Your father humiliated me in front of the entire pack, Evans. I am your mate, but I guess that means nothing to you when it comes to the throne.”
“How pathetic can you be? Acting like you don’t know how much I hate being in a relationship with you. I hate this mate bond and you know it. All these years I stick around just to get you to carry my pup, but you always refuse.” He paces the dungeon hallway. The primal look in his eyes makes me shrink back until my spine touches the wall.
“You are so stubborn, Avery. Just a pup,” he raises one finger, then adds another, “maybe two. Two pups. But you are hell-bent on waiting until the coronation ceremony. Hell will freeze over before you ever become my Luna.”
“You know you could have rejected me, right?”
He sucks his teeth. “Now, where is the fun I that? I found a replacement the minute I found out you were my mate. She has been amazing.”
“You cheating bastard.”
“Don’t be dramatic. Someone else gives me what you denied me for three years. How was I supposed to cope with my needs?”
I open my mouth to respond, but a voice interrupts.
“Baby, baby, where are you?”
Goosebumps form on my skin as I watch my best friend walk into my mate’s waiting arms. Her lips meet his in a passionate kiss.
“Brielle?” I call, but she ignores me.
This is a dream, Avery. You will wake up soon.
“Darling, this is your new life now. Better get used to it.”
“Brielle… wh…why?”
“Let’s just say I get tired of living in your shadow.” She smooths her thigh-length, leather dress.
“You are always the perfect one, meek, respectful, and smart. And I am always behind you.”
“You are my sister, Brielle. It doesn’t matter that we are not related by blood. You know I would give anything for you.”
“I always love Evans, but even the moon goddess favors you more than me. She made you his mate.”
“How long have you two been seeing each other?”
“Let me think.” She taps her finger on her chin. “Pretty much since you found out he is your mate.”
“That is a whole three years, Brielle. I would never do something like that to you.”
“Too bad.”
We go quiet, just staring at each other.
I stand to my feet, ignoring the ache in my body, and walk to the metal door. My ripped dress still hangs loosely over me.
“I see it now. The hatred in your eyes, Brielle.”
She shrugs like it means nothing.
“Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” Evans’s hands do not leave her body, neither do his eyes.
“A maid will come for you tonight. You will serve at the Alpha’s guest table. Be on your best behavior and freshen up, you stink.”
“You will get what you deserve, sister. Karma is a bitch.” I turn to Evans and brace myself.
“I, Avery Nyelle Valemont, daughter of Clark Peterson Valemont of Crescent Moon Pack, reject you, Evans Maddox, as my mate.”
