Avery’s POV
I follow the young servant, Benjamin, as he leads the way. The house is unusually quiet.
Different thoughts fill my mind.
“Did he say why?” I ask once I find my voice.
He shrugs.
“No. He just said to bring you to him.”
I let out a breath.
“If he wants to apologize, then it’s a little too late for that.” I mutter under my breath. I’m sure Benjamin hears me, but he stays quiet.
We walk quietly toward the Alpha’s chambers, a floor above Evans’s.
Thinking about Evans and how cruel he is makes bile rise in my throat.
“One problem at a time, Avery.” I tell myself.
“This is as far as I can go.” Benjamin stops as we reach the hallway of Alpha Maddox’s chamber. “His room is the second on your left. Don’t keep him waiting.” He hurries off like being near me burns his skin.
My palms begin to sweat, but I know better than to disobey the Alpha’s orders, especially on a day like this.
I knock.
“Come in,” a deep voice answers.
I turn the doorknob.
A soft squeal reaches my ears.
“Shut the door and come forward,” Alpha Maddox says. The room is dark except for a lamp stand, but with my wolf vision, I can see him clearly.
I shut the door but stay still.
“I prefer this distance,” I say.
“I said come forward, Avery.”
I take a few steps but keep away from his king-sized bed, where he remains.
“You called for me, Alpha.”
“I did.” He grabs a glass of red wine from his bedside table and drinks.
“I know today must be hard for you, knowing how much you loved your father.”
“You know I love him with every fiber of my being, and you still take him away from me like he is a criminal.” I yell. My eyes blur with tears.
“Watch your tone, young lady.” He sets down the glass. “I’m still your Alpha, and you’ll speak to me with respect. The only reason I won’t have your tongue ripped out right now is because I need you.”
You are no Alpha of mine, I think, but I bite my tongue to keep it in.
He stands from his bed, ties the knot of his black robe, and walks over to me. I take a step back.
“I won’t hurt you, Avery.”
“I don’t believe you.”
He runs his hand through his dark hair.
“I called you here because I have a proposal.” He towers over me.
“One that brings my father back to life?” I ask without thinking.
“No. Peterson is gone, and you better accept it. Now, for my proposal,” His eyes move over my body. I suddenly feel exposed in my off-shoulder gown. His gaze flickers between black and gold. Lust fills them. “I want you to be mine.”
My mouth falls open. If a fly were nearby, it would fly right in.
“My son doesn’t deserve you. Evans is just a boy. You need a real man. I’ve watched you since you turned eighteen and found out Evans was your mate. He has nothing to offer you. I know the pack might find it strange that I want you, but it doesn’t have to be public. It’ll be our secret. I’ll protect you. I will kill anyone who…”
I turn and run for the door. My hand barely touches the knob when his arm wraps around my waist. He pulls me to the bed. I kick and fight. My leg knocks over a case, and it shatters.
“Let me go, you disgusting bastard!”
“Shut your mouth.”
My back hits the bed, then he leans over me.
“Do you know how many women in this pack would kill for this, huh? You ungrateful bitch.”
He grabs a pillow and presses it over my face, cutting off my air.
“Help! Help!” I scream when he pulls it off.
His palm slaps my right cheek hard. I lose my breath.
“The faster you cooperate, the faster it’s over.”
“You are a monster. You will die a slow, painful death.” My chest rises and falls as I talk. I push my hair back and spit on his face.
He wipes it off slowly. His eyes turn full gold. He lets his wolf take control.
I try to run, but I’m not fast enough.
His claws dig into my wrist, and I scream. His fists slam into my face over and over until my lip breaks.
He rips my dress off. I’m left in only my underwear. He unties his robe and tosses it aside. Then he positions himself on top of me.
“Please.” I beg, thrashing as best as I can.
Before he can go further, the light switches on and the room lights up.
“Dad?” Evans’s voice comes from the doorway, disbelief filling it.
