Chapter Fifteen

I went for a run after dropping Gavin off. I did it for two reasons. First, my emotions were all over the place and I needed to calm down. Running did that for me, putting me in a zone of contentment, even if only for a little while. Second, I wanted to see how far along repairs on Gavin’s apartment building were.
When I got to his place, I stopped and stared up at the old brick building. Instead of the sounds of construction equipment at work, painters were on ladders. My heart sank, because this meant they were almost done with repairs.
“I don’t want you to go, Gavin.”
I didn’t realize I’d said it aloud until a couple of the painters gave me odd looks. Chuckling, I stepped off the sidewalk and crossed over to the wide, grassy median in the middle of the avenue
