Chapter Five Gavin Aaron hung his head, but his chestnut gaze never left mine. “I’m an optimist. You never know what is waiting around the corner, and I prefer to focus on the positive.” I shivered and hoped he didn’t notice. His deep voice touched something inside me, but I couldn’t allow him to see how my body reacted to him. “I wish I shared your optimism, but…” “Maybe you should try.” Aaron stated, then leaned back, and the wooden booth groaned under his weight. I wanted to reply that he was one of many reasons I didn’t trust the world, but something in the way he looked at me cut the words off before I could blurt them out. Despite his outward rugged appearance, he radiated an innocence I had shed long ago. Plus, he was trying to make amends, and that was a rarity in my life. I
