Watching dragon eggs hatch over several hours should have gotten boring, but it didn’t, not for any of us. The entire school watched as eggs began to rock, then chip, then little baby dragons would fall out of their shells to be greeted by their parents.
The green eggs, the earth dragons, came first. Then fire, followed by air and water. The last one was the single golden egg.
“Why is that one gold?” I ask Ajax, but it’s Phoenix who answers.
“She will be the Queen of the Dragons.”
When Ajax tells me he doesn’t know, I tell him in our mind link what Phoenix said.
He turns and looks at me and I shrug. “That’s what she said.”
When she hatches, daintily falling out of her shell, I knew Phoenix was right. Unlike her brothers and sisters, the queen has multi-colored scales, just like Elian
