17 “Who are you?” asked Max. Annora Hamby gasped dramatically and placed a hand at the base of her throat. “Max, how could you say that? You know me.” He moved sideways toward Bonedread and the portal. “If you’re my mother, what was the nickname you gave me when I was five?” Annora smiled and clasped her hands in front of her. “You were such an adorable little boy. That’s easy. My little love bug.” “Wrong.” He roped her in his magic. “Bonedread move.” He lifted her up and threw her into the portal. It snapped shut. The goblin caught the disk before it hit the ground. He blew out a breath. “What was that? How did you know she was a fake?” Max reigned in his magic and frowned at the goblin. “I kind of knew before we left Merrihaven. My mother never raises her voice or acts like that.”
