Chapter 9

Her eyes glistened with unshed tears. “I don’t know what it is. I just know that I can’t let myself get attached to someone like you.” “And yet here we are,” he said, his voice gentle. She shook her head, emotions bubbling to the surface. “Please don’t make this harder on me.” Anthony’s expression shifted—hurt, frustration, and something more complicated behind his gaze. “Then tell me,” he urged, his jaw tightened. “Tell me you feel nothing, and I’ll step back. I’ll let you go.” Khloe locked eyes with him. The man who seemed to have it all—but whose eyes spoke of a longing for love. She couldn’t deceive him. But staying felt impossible, too. “I feel too much,” she whispered. “That’s why I need to walk away.” With a heavy heart, she turned and left him there in the greenhouse—surrounded by beauty but feeling utterly alone. --- Outside, in the shadows, someone who had been watching them the night before picked up their phone. “It’s happening,” a voice said. “She’s more involved than we thought.” That night, the rain returned—gentle and soothing, almost like a warning. Khloe stayed in her room, staring at the ceiling, her thoughts swirling like the wind against the glass. She had walked away. She had done what felt right. So why did it feel like a part of her had cracked? Through the quiet moments, she heard faint whispers—staff chatting, doors softly opening and closing, footsteps with intent. Something felt off. Then came a knock. Not at her door. But at Anthony's. From her bed, she heard it—a single knock, then another. And then silence. --- The next morning, Tasha called her into the staff office. The atmosphere inside was tense yet filled with urgency. “You’ve been reassigned,” Tasha said, still focused on her desk. Khloe blinked, surprised. “What do you mean?” “You’ll be assisting with the lower guest quarters for a while. Mr. Anthony specifically requested this change.” A chill swept through Khloe's chest. “He asked for that?” Tasha met her gaze. “Yes, it was his instruction. And it was approved.” It felt like a sudden, uncomfortable shift after everything they had shared. The sparks, the greenhouse moments, the unspoken words that lingered. Khloe’s lips quivered. “Why?” “Maybe he’s protecting you,” Tasha suggested. “Or maybe he’s looking out for himself.” But it didn’t seem like self-preservation. It felt like someone had influenced him. Someone who had been watching. --- That afternoon, Khloe decided to take a chance. She slipped into the west wing during the staff break, moving quickly and keeping her head low. She passed the grand staircase, wove through the beautifully draped hallway, and finally entered his study. It was empty—but not for long. She turned just as Gabriel walked in, his face a mix of concern and neutrality. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his tone flat. She took a step closer. “Why did you pull away from me?” He didn’t respond right away. “Anthony. Please, talk to me.” His jaw tightened. “Because someone sent photos. Of us. Together. In the greenhouse last night.” Khloe felt her heart sink. “Someone’s watching you,” he said. “Watching us. And they shared those photos with my board, my legal team, and even my family.” “Who?” she whispered, stunned. “I don’t know,” he said. “But it feels like they’re trying to come between us.” Khloe felt weak in her knees. “So you’re distancing yourself to keep me safe.” He finally looked at her, and for the first time, she recognized the fear in his eyes. Not for himself. For her. “I wouldn’t survive if anything happened to you,” he said earnestly. Tears spilled down her cheeks despite her attempts to hold them back. “I never asked you to protect me,” she whispered. “No,” he replied, his voice trembling. “But I’m going to do it anyway.” He reached for her hand—a brief, tender moment. Then he let go. And walked away. --- In the shadows of the security room, someone watched the camera feed, a chill smile creeping across their face. The pieces were starting to come apart. And the real turmoil was just beginning. The mansion had never felt so chilly. Not even in winter when the snow blanketed the estate in a peaceful stillness. This was something else. The coldness stemmed from within—through shared glances that went unnoticed, closed doors, and the silence that lingered where once there were warm, gentle words. Khloe busied herself in the guest quarters, folding towels, replenishing soap dispensers, and changing bedsheets with a cheerful smile. But when no one was around, tears would escape her eyes in the laundry room. She missed him—the warmth of his hand, the way he listened, and the comfort of knowing that in his presence, she was seen. Most importantly, she missed the part of her that felt… significant. But somehow, that buzz of importance had been taken away, and she was beginning to wonder if it was more than mere jealousy; it felt almost like a betrayal. --- One evening, as Khloe walked past Tasha's office, she heard something unusual—whispers, quick and just above a hush. She paused to listen and caught Tasha's unmistakable voice: “Yes. He’s pulling back. The girl’s isolated. You’ll get what you want soon.” A deeper, colder voice replied, “Good. The board wants him to feel anxious. Once he’s off balance, the acquisition will move quicker.” Khloe's heart raced. Tasha was aiding someone in undermining Anthony. This was bigger than just her; she was being used—pushed to shake Anthony’s confidence and pressure him to relinquish control. It felt like a game, and she was a pawn in someone else's strategy. Carefully, she stepped back, her heart pounding. Anthony had done his best to protect her, but now it was time for her to take charge and fight back. The next morning, Khloe marched right into Anthony's study without knocking. He looked up, surprise clear on his face. “Khloe—” She closed the door behind her. “We need to talk, and fast.” She shared everything she had overheard, articulating what she feared. His face shifted through confusion, anger, and finally, a deeper hurt.
