6🪶 SAVING HER MOTHER

1281 Words
The elevator glided silently back down to the ground floor, but Sarah was no longer the broken girl who had stepped into it. Clutched tightly in her hand was the heavy silver nursing pin. Behind her, maintaining a dominating distance, stepped was Mr. Solomon. His presence alone seemed to push the bustling hotel lobby into a tense hush. As if there was no conversation between them. Near the high-stakes lounge, Arthur Young her father and her Aunt Helena were huddled together, drinks in hand. Arthur was aggressively counting a fresh stack of high-value casino markers, while Helena adjusted her pearls, her sharp eyes scanning the room like a hawk looking for a fresh big fish to catch. But when Helena spotted Sarah approaching her, and walking with fierce posture... her face instantly contorted into a mask of ugly malice. She tapped Arthur’s arm fiercely, pointing a manicured nail at her niece. "Look at you," Helena spat loudly, her voice dripping with disgust so the nearby socialites and hotel staff could hear. She stepped forward, deliberately blocking the path to the exit. "Disgraceful! Arthur, look at your daughter. We thought she was studying hard at school, and what does she do? She sneaks into this luxury hotel to sell herself!" Sarah stopped dead in her tracks, her chest is heaving. "What are you talking about?!" she asked. "Don't play innocent with me, Sarah!" Helena Young sneered, raising her voice further. "I saw you. I discovered your little secret. You couldn't wait to be a bride, so you slept with some nameless, wealthy man upstairs! You’re a tramp, Sarah. You’ve brought nothing but shame and filth to our family name!" Arthur’s Young face darkened into a purple rage. His leather brown shoes slammed against the tiles, as he stepped up beside Helena. Then he raised his blunt finger, and his voice is like a gravelly roar. "You worthless brat! I gave you a roof, I kept your mother breathing, and you ruined my credit by whoring yourself out in a casino lobby?!" Sarah looked at them. For the first time in her life, she didn't cry. She didn't flinch. A cold, and dark laugh escaped her lips. "Is that all the words you're going to tell?" Sarah said, in a cold tone. She took a step closer, forcing Helena to look at the fierce, lethal calm in her eyes. "You think you can use Mom to muzzle me? It’s over, Helena. Your lies don't work for me anymore." "How dare you speak to your elders like... " Helena started, raising her hand. "Touch her, and I will have the police scrape what is left of your family off this floor," a low, terrifying voice vibrated from behind Sarah. Arthur and Helena both froze, their breath catching in their throats as Mr. Solomon stepped out of the shadows. His strong and powerful aura loomed over them, his jaw clenched and his serious eyes burning with a lethal authority. The entire security personnel and body guards of the Grand Regency instantly shifted, their bodies forming a protective, and rigid wall behind him. Arthur’s face went pale, his stack of casino chips nearly slipping through his thick fingers. "M-Mr. Solomon... sir. This is just a family matter. My daughter, she... " "Your daughter is under my protection," Mr. Solomon interrupted coldly, his deep voice carrying a terrifying finality. He didn't even glance at Helena, treating her like an absolute insect in his place. "And as of ten minutes ago, Mrs. Maria has been permanently extracted from that disgusting charity ward. She is currently checking into a private hospital suite at St. Jude’s Med Center under my personal account. Your waivers are nullified. Your access to her trust is revoked." Helena Young gasped, her hand flying to her pearls as she looked at Sarah in absolute horror. Sarah stepped past them, her shoes clicking sharply against the stone floor. She paused right beside her father, leaning in so only he could hear her final words. "You wanted to sell me to save your skin, Father. But you forgot one thing. You sold me to a predator much bigger than you. Enjoy your chips tonight. Because one day, I am coming for everything else you own." Without looking back, Sarah walked through the gilded rotating doors in the exit. Helena Young stood frozen on the pristine marble floor, her fingers clamped around her pearl necklace so tightly the string threatened to snap. Her sharp, heavily made-up face was a mask of calculated panic. The neighboring socialites and low-level high-rollers who had gathered to witness the spectacle were whispering behind their silk fans and crystal flutes, their eyes darting between Helena and the dark street where the Solomon limousine had just vanished. "Arthur," Helena hissed, as she turned on her heel. "Arthur, did you hear what he said? St. Jude’s Med Center. Bill directly to his primary account. That little tramp didn't just find a benefactor, she found a shield. If she convinces him to audit the family estate, if she tells him about the liquidation of Maria's trust..." She didn't finish the sentence. The sheer financial ruin that awaited them if the Solomon syndicate turned its ledger-books toward their household was enough to make her throat go dry. Helena smoothed down the front of her expensive velvet dress, her mind already spinning, weaving a dozen different lies to patch the tear in their safety net. "I need to call his secretary," Helena muttered, pulling a gold-plated smartphone from her leather handbag, her long, manicured nails clicking frantically against the screen. "No... better yet, I will go to the estate myself. I’ll tell Mr. Solomon that Sarah is unstable. I’ll tell him the girl has a history of pathological lying, that the bruise on her cheek was from a fall, that we were only trying to protect her from her own erratic behavior. A man of his stature won't risk his reputation on a damaged, ungrateful nursing student if he thinks she’s a liability." Helena took two steps toward the hotel exit, her pointed heels clicking like dry bone against the marble. "Stop." The word was gravelly heavy with absolute defeat. Arthur hadn't moved. He stood exactly where Sarah had left him, his thick, blunt fingers still clutching the stack of high-value casino markers. The brilliant crystal chandeliers overhead caught the deep lines of his face, making him look older, hollower... like a statue crumbling from the inside out. The passivity that usually masked his coldness had curdled into something dark and stagnant. "Arthur, move out of my way!" Helena snapped, trying to brush past his broad shoulder. "We have less than an hour before that marriage contract becomes a legal noose around our necks. If I can get into Solomon's good graces, if I can make him see that we are the logical partners here..." Arthur’s hand shot out. His grip was a vice, his calloused fingers locking around Helena’s wrist with enough force to leave an instant purple crescent in her skin. "Let go of me! Are you mad?" she gasped, her aristocratic composure shattering into a shrill hiss. "You stupid, greedy b***h. Look at the security personnel at the perimeter. Look at the dealers at the tables. They aren't looking at us because we're important. They're looking at us because we're like a walking dead " Arthur rumbled, his voice dangerously quiet, meant only for her ears. He didn't look at her face, his pale, washed-out grey eyes were fixed on the glass doors where his daughter had walked out. "What are you talking about?" Helena whispered, finally feeling a chill of fear through her denial.
