10. UNDER HER WATCH

Sarah hesitated, then nodded. "Gabriel." He shifted his weight, a low groan escaping his chest as his muscles protested the movement. He turned his head to look at her fully, his gaze instantly tracking the distinct, dark purple handprints blooming across her pale jawline. In the dim light of the lamp, the bruises looked vicious, like a collar of ash around her throat. "Your father did that. The man who bartered you away like a piece of dead stock." Gabriel murmured, his voice dropping into a strict, dangerous register. It wasn't the voice of a patient; it was the voice of a man who held the keys to international logistics empires. "He didn't just do this. He robbed my mother. He took every single cent from her medical trust account, money her own parents had left her, to pay off his markers at the Grand Regency. He signed a minimum care waiver that allowed the hospital to leave her in a charity ward to develop bedsores because she was a 'bottomless pit draining his estate. He didn't just sell me, Gabriel. He’s been killing her for a year." Sarah said quietly, her hands tightening under the wool blanket. She looked away from him, her eyes anchoring on the dark window where the rain was streaking the glass. The silence in the room grew heavy, thick with the shared scent of cedarwood, rain, and old, bitter blood. Gabriel didn't offer empty pity. He didn't tell her it would be alright. He knew the world didn't run on comfort; he knew it ran on power. "My mother died when I was seven," Gabriel said suddenly, his deep voice sliding through the quiet. Sarah looked back at him, surprised by the sudden vulnerability. "She didn't die of a disease," Gabriel continued, his sapphire eyes staring up at the ceiling, cold and reflective. "She died of the Solomon name. My father—the patriarch before Julian took the seat—was an unyielding, tyrannical beast. He ran this family like a military campaign. My mother was a gentle woman from a old, soft family in the south. She couldn't survive the pressure. When she realized what my father was turning Julian into, and when she saw the first signs of my neurological instability, she took a bottle of sleeping pills in the garden pavilion." Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. "I’m sorry." "Don't be," Gabriel said sharply, his jaw clenching. "It was the only logical choice she had left. My father covered it up, of course. Told the board it was a sudden heart failure. The stock didn't drop a single point. Julian was twelve; he learned the lesson perfectly. Resources over feelings. The name over the individual. When my father died three years ago, Julian took the ring and became exactly what our father wanted: a machine." He slowly sat up, resting his back against the padded walnut headboard. The movement made his left arm give a sudden, violent jerk—a residual tremor. He glared at his own limb with pure, unadulterated disgust, his knuckles turning white as he forced it down against his thigh. "Julian loves me," Gabriel whispered, a dark, cynical edge to his words. "But he loves the primary estate more. He keeps me hidden in this wing because I am a variable he cannot control. If the board discovers that the head of logistics—the man who designs the global supply chain algorithms for the entire syndicate—suffers from a temporal lobe spike that induces lethal psychosis during a crisis, they will trigger the transition clause. Julian will be forced to strip my shares, lock me in a private sanitarium in Switzerland, and hand my division over to our rivals." Sarah stood up, her ivory train whispering against the rug as she walked to the bedside table. She poured a fresh glass of water from the silver carafe, standing over him as she held it out. "And you would rather burn your mind to ash than let him do that," she said, repeating his words from earlier. Gabriel looked up, his sapphire eyes locking onto hers as he took the glass. His fingers brushed against hers—cold, solid, and steadying. "I am a Solomon, Sarah. We don't yield. Not to our brothers, not to our rivals, and certainly not to our own blood." He took a slow drink, his eyes never leaving her face. "Julian thinks he bought a nurse to keep me quiet. He thinks he gave your father a bone to settle a debt. But he made a mistake, Sarah. He put the two most desperate people in this city in the same room. He gave me a medical professional who knows exactly how to keep my mind sharp, and he gave you the keys to the Solomon vault." He set the glass down with a firm, deliberate clink against the mahogany table. He leaned forward, his face inches from hers, the proximity sending a strange, electric chill down her spine despite the warmth of the fire. " Tell me what you need to destroy Arthur," Gabriel murmured, his voice a low, seductive promise of ruin. "Give me the names of his shell companies. Give me the dates of his markers. I will write the algorithm that strips his credit until he is begging for pennies on the very street where he sold you." Sarah looked at him—the tragic, lethal prince of shadows—and for the first time since walking into the charity ward, she felt a dark, intoxicating spark of hope. She wasn't just a lamb anymore. She had a predator on her leash. The conversation was abruptly severed. Gabriel’s sapphire eyes suddenly went wide, the pupils dilating until the blue was nearly swallowed by black. The glass he had just set down rattled against the mahogany table as his entire body went rigid as stone. Sarah’s clinical instincts fired instantly. "Gabriel?" He didn't answer. A low, guttural gasp escaped his throat as his head snapped backward against the headboard. His left arm, the side affected by the focal motor spike, rose into the air, the fingers curling tightly into a stiff, claw-like contracture that looked horribly identical to her mother’s paralyzed hands. His jaw locked, his teeth grinding together with a terrifying, mechanical force. A secondary generalization. The thought flashed through Sarah’s mind with absolute, freezing clarity. The focal seizure wasn't settling; it was spreading across both hemispheres of his brain, triggering a full-scale grand mal convulsion. "Gabriel, look at me!" Sarah commanded, diving across the mattress. She grabbed two plush pillows from the headboard, shoving them violently beneath his head to protect his skull from fracturing against the walnut wood as his entire six-foot frame began to convulse violently. His heels slammed against the mattress, the sheets tearing under the sheer, unbridled force of his muscle contractions. This wasn't like the controlled clinic environment of her nursing school rotations. There were no side rails to pull up, no emergency crash carts with pre-measured code drugs, and no team of residents to call for backup. It was just her, her soaked wedding dress, and a billionaire prince tearing himself apart on a bed of luxury linen. Gabriel’s eyes rolled back into his head, showing only the bloodshot whites. A thick, frothy saliva began to pool at the corners of his locked jaw, his breathing turning into a horrifying, choking wheeze. "Left lateral recumbent," Sarah muttered to herself, her fingers flying across the ivory silk of her skirt, gathering the fabric so she could get leverage. She threw her weight against his rigid shoulder, forcing his massive frame to turn onto his left side. She tucked his right knee forward to anchor him, ensuring his airway remained clear so he wouldn't aspirate on his own secretions. Click. The digital console on the wall suddenly flashed a bright, flashing crimson. A harsh, electronic alarm began to blare through the soundproofed room, the telemetry monitor in the headboard had detected his heart rate spiking past 170 beats per minute. The heavy steel double doors burst open instantly. Julian Solomon strode into the room, his face pale, flanked by two estate doctors in white lab coats carrying advanced emergency medical kits. "What happened?" Julian demanded, his voice lose its calm efficiency, cracking with a rare, naked terror as he saw his younger brother convulsing on the bed. "Dr. Vance said the initial dose would stabilize him until morning!"
