3. THE WILD WOLF

But as she pushed through the heavy doors and walked out of the hospital, the weight of reality settled heavily over her shoulders. The only way to get that kind of money... the only way to save her mother from rotting in this ward, was to sell herself to the Solomons Family. "I have to find another way.." she told herself. Wiping the tears from her face as she walked through the dark streets. Right now, she was still in her working clothes as a nurse, driven by a desperate, fleeting shred of hope. She couldn't sell herself and she couldn't let them win. On the edge of the street from the PG medical district. She banged heavily on the door of a modest apartment. It belonged to Leah, her closest friend from nursing school and the only person in the city she truly trusted. When the door swung open, Leah gasped, looking at Sarah's messy hair, her shivering frame, and the faint, swelling shadow on her cheek. "Sarah? My God, what happened to you? Come inside..." "Leah, please," Sarah interrupted, her voice cracking as she grabbed her friend's forearms. Her hands were like an ice-cold. "I need help. I need money. As much as you have, as much as I can borrow. I need to move my mother out of the PG charity ward tonight. She's suffering now, Leah. My father... he’s going to let her die if I don't do what he wants." Leah’s face fell, a crushing helplessness crossing her features. She pulled Sarah into the warmth of the hallway, but she didn't reach for her purse. "Sarah... you know I work double shifts just to pay rent. My savings account has barely a few hundred dollars in it. To move a paralyzed patient to a private facility, to pay for round-the-clock intensive care and physical therapy... you're talking about tens of thousands of dollars a month. I don't have that. Nobody we know has that kind of money." The truth hit Sarah harder than the solid walls that trapped her. She nodded numbly, backing out of the apartment despite Leah's protests to stay, to call the police, and to find another way. But Sarah knew that even the police couldn't rewrite a minimum care of waiver, and they couldn't force Arthur to put money back into a liquidated trust account. Stepping back into the street, Sarah walked aimlessly, her shoes crashing through the puddles. She felt entirely hollowed out, thinking if someone might help her. As she neared the neon-lit entertainment district, a sleek, midnight-black sedan purred to a halt against the curb outside the grand entrance of the Grand Regency Center. The hotel was a towering monument of glass and gold, famous for its high-stakes underground casino. Sarah instinctively shrank into the shadow of a concrete pillar. As the long-violet dress wearing by a woman rushed forward to the opening door. She can't see clearly the face of a woman, but she visioned her like her Aunt Helena. Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. Stepping out of the vehicle was her father, Arthur. He looked immaculate. The violent, enraged monster who had struck her in the study was gone, replaced by a man of supreme confidence. He smoothed the lapels of his expensive wool coat, completely unbothered by the storm. Emerging from the other side of the car was a sleek, dangerous-looking man in a tailored silver suit, one of the notorious loan sharks who ran the backroom tables at the Regency. "The Solomon contract is practically signed," Sarah heard her father’s voice, casual and devoid of any weight. "My daughter will do exactly as I told. By midnight, the first wire transfer will clear, and my markers will be settled in full." The man in the silver suit laughed, a dry, grating sound, and clapped Arthur on the shoulder. "Good. I'd hate to have to repossess that pretty house of yours, Arthur. Let's go inside. The blackjack tables are waiting, and your credit is good for tonight." Sarah watched as her father nodded, a cold and self-satisfied smile touching his lips as he walked through the gilded rotating doors of the luxury hotel. He was already gambling away the money from her sale before the ink on the marriage license was even wet. While her mother lay in a crowded ward with untreated bedsores and curled, rigid fingers, Arthur was stepping into a world of champagne, velvet, and green felt. The last ounce of fear inside Sarah crystallized into something sharp, dark, and lethal. She wasn't just a lamb to the slaughter anymore. If she had to walk into the Solomon estate and sell her freedom, she would make sure every single cent went toward saving her mother, and destroying the father who had traded her life for a hand of cards. Striding through the gilded revolving doors, Sarah didn’t care about how she looked. All she could see was her father's self-satisfied smile as he walked toward the high-stakes backrooms. "Sir! Arthur!" Sarah called out, trying to press past the velvet ropes leading to the exclusive casino floor. Two massive security guards in sharp black suits instantly blocked her path, their expressions immovable. "Exclusive VIP access only, miss," the larger guard said, his voice dropping into a warning tone. "Unregistered guests are not permitted past the lobby." "You don't understand. That man who just walked in, is Mr. Arthur, he's my father. I have to speak with him! It’s an emergency!" Sarah pleaded, her voice rising in desperation as she tried to look past their broad shoulders. "No VIP card, no entry. Move along before we have you removed for vagrancy," the guard replied coldly, looking down at her wet clothes with clear disgust. Sarah didn't back down. Desperate to stop her father before he gambled away her mother's survival, she tried to push her way past the barrier again. "Just let me pass for one minute! Arthur! Listen to me..." "I said, move!" a sharp voice barked. A stern lady guard stepped forward, grabbing Sarah by the shoulder. With a rough shove, she pushed Sarah backward away from the VIP entrance. Sarah’s shoes lost their traction on the slick marble floor. She stumbled blindly backward, her hands flailing as she prepared it up for a painful impact with the stone ground. But the fall never came. Instead, she slammed hard against a solid, unmoving wall of a chest. Two powerful, perfectly tailored arms caught her securely by the waist, arresting her fall instantly. The sheer force of her momentum pressed her body flat against him. She could feel the steady, rhythmic thud of his heartbeat beneath a heavy wool coat, and the faint, expensive scent of cedarwood and rain washed over her. Sarah gasped, her hands instinctively clutching at the lapels of his suit coat to steady herself. "Are you alright?" a man's voice asked, with a quiet authority that seemed to instantly silence the bustling noise of the hotel lobby. Sarah looked up, her breath hitching in her throat. The man holding her was striking. He possessed a sharp, lethal handsomeness.. an angular jawline, dark hair perfectly styled despite the storm outside, and eyes so intensely serious they seemed to pierce straight through her. There was an unmistakable aura of power radiating from him, the kind that made the entire room shift its gravity toward him.
