Seven and a half months pregnant, she was ready for the violence to end. Ready for peace, for safety, for a chance to bring their daughter into a world that wasn't constantly trying to kill them.

"I need to talk to Mikhail," Adrian said one morning over breakfast. Not Mikhail Volkov, the other Mikhail. The dead one's brother. The original source of all their problems.
"Why?" she asked, immediately suspicious. "We haven't had contact with him since the whole Yuri situation."
"Exactly. And that makes me nervous. He's been too quiet. Too passive." Adrian pushed his food around his plate. "I want to propose a formal alliance. Bring him into the fold completely. Make sure he's not planning anything."
