Chapter 4

Louis’s POV Splash. Cold water ran out of my hair. Metal and blood in my nose. I shivered. “Where am I?” Shapes in the dark. One of them watching like I’d stolen something from his house. My head throbbed. I tried to sit. Chains. Chair. A man with a face built for murder. Could’ve been the Alpha from the club. Too dark in there to know. He came close. My breath snagged. *Mate,* Lou sang, shoving for control. I shoved back harder. I laughed anyway. “Unlawful invite. This how you greet your mate?” He didn’t smile. “We’re mates, sure. Chaining me to a chair is a bit much for anything I might’ve done to you.” “Far-fetched.” He stepped out of the dark. *Oh. He’s pretty,* Lou cooed. “Shut up. Look at the room. What if he’s a psychopath?” *Then you matched. Pair of them. You earned this.* He caught my jaw. The bond lit under his hand, hotter than the grip. It hurt more than it should have. “Do you know what you did yesterday?” Fuzzy. Club. Blood. A body on the road. I let my mouth stay easy. “Nope. Remind me. Brain’s on strike.” Untie me, I thought. I’ll paint his nose my favorite color. “You don’t remember.” He clapped once, slow, and fisted my hair. “I’ll walk you through it. You won’t like what comes after.” “That a threat?” Slam. My face hit the desk. Fire up the side of my skull. I spat blood at his shoes. He walked out. “Pray I never get loose,” I called. “You’ll regret putting hands on me.” He came back with a laptop. “This should help.” I smirked at him until the footage started. Me. Jake. Jade. The road. The girl. My stomach dropped on the smear. His fist went white around the chair. I’d hit my mate’s sister. Lou howled. *Beg.* I rolled my eyes and watched the rest. “Remember now?” He was close again. The face clicked. Same bones as the girl on the ground. “I remember hitting a stray. Didn’t know she was yours. Pardon me.” Flat. My eyes wanted to close. I needed sleep. His hand found my throat. “You don’t even care that she was a person.” Care. I wheezed around his thumb. “Did she deserve it? What the f**k was she doing in the road at that hour?” The arm locked. Grey crept in at the edges. “Alpha Leo—stop. You’ll kill him. That isn’t the plan.” A shadow pulled his wrist. Blaine. I filed the name. “This is for my sister.” “Then do it slow. Not now.” The hand opened. I coughed until I cried, then I laughed. He looked at me like I’d broken a rule. “Oh. Alpha. You’ve got a name. That’s all you’ve got? I hit your sister and you choke me and storm off?” His face changed. “Don’t think the bond buys you mercy. She lost her legs because of you. I’ll take your life apart and stitch it wrong until you know what it is to lose something.” I yawned. “My lecturers talk less.” He started forward. Blaine blocked him. I met Leo’s eyes. “You know what I regret? Getting you. Reject me. Do us both a favor.” He looked at the guards. “He doesn’t leave. Make sure he’s served.” Served. Lou wouldn’t shut up. *I told you to call the hospital.* “You’re yelling. I should lock you down for that.” *I hate you. You push me out every time you play monster. Today I’m saying it. I hate you.* Splash. Another bucket. Teeth locked. Skin going wrong colors. Splash. I lost count. Blue mouth. Shaking. The room tipping. The door opened. “Bring his two friends.” I smiled with a ruined throat. “You’re inviting the chaos. Cute.” Dark took me. I was still smiling. Come on then. ---
