Rain sheeted down over the mountaintop keep, cascading in rivulets down stone walls and saturating the training fields below. The world felt heavy, veiled in gray.
Kaelen stood at the edge of the overlook, arms folded, eyes distant. His broad frame remained unmoved despite the chill, the only sign of his tension the clenched jaw and the white-knuckled grip on the railing.
Behind him, light footsteps approached. He didn’t need to turn.
Liora.
“You’ve been out here for too long,” she said, her voice quiet but firm. “You’ll catch cold.”
“I don’t get sick,” Kaelen replied.
Liora moved to his side, her cloak already soaked. “You’re still human enough to need warmth.”
He glanced at her, eyes like winter stormclouds. “The pack expects clarity. Decisions. Strength. But I feel like I’m making choices blindfolded.”
“You don’t have to have all the answers,” she murmured. “Just the courage to keep asking the right questions.”
Kaelen looked away, shame flickering across his face. “There are signs movement in the outer territories, whispers about the Trial of Flame being incomplete. Some believe I was chosen only because I survived. Not because I was meant to lead.”
“And do you believe that?” she asked gently.
He hesitated.
“I believe… I’m afraid. Of failing them. Of failing you.”
Liora stepped in front of him, reaching up to cradle his face. “You didn’t claim the title out of ambition. You stepped into the fire to protect us all. That’s what makes you worthy.”
He exhaled slowly, leaning into her touch.
“I’m not the Alpha they wanted.”
“No,” she said. “You’re the Alpha they need.”
Lightning flashed distantly, casting golden light across his damp skin. In that moment, Kaelen didn’t look like a warrior. He looked like a man torn between duty and doubt.
Liora stood on her toes, brushing her lips against his. “Let them doubt you. Let them question. But never doubt yourself, Kaelen. Not while I believe in you.”
The bond between them stirred warm and steady, wrapping around Kaelen like armor.
He looked down at her, resolve building behind his eyes.
“Then I’ll face what’s coming,” he said. “Not just for the pack. But for us.”
And beside him, Liora nodded.
As long as they stood together, no truth could break them.
