Chapter 4

315 Words
The dinner table was tense, the air thick with unspoken words. Kala tried to mediate, but the family's usual warmth and laughter were noticeably absent. The siblings, usually chatty and energetic, were quiet and subdued. Zave's mother attempted to break the silence, but her words fell flat. "So, how was everyone's day?" she asked, her voice forced. The responses were monosyllabic, with Zave's siblings barely looking up from their plates. Zave himself seemed distant, his eyes fixed on some point beyond the room. Kala's attempts to lighten the mood only seemed to make things worse. "I found a great new recipe online," she said, trying to sound cheerful. "Maybe I can try it out this weekend?" The siblings exchanged a look, and one of them muttered something under their breath. Zave's mother shot them a warning glance, but the tension remained. Suddenly, Zave slammed his fist on the table, making everyone jump. "Enough!" he growled, his eyes flashing with anger. The room fell silent, the only sound the ticking of the clock. Kala felt a shiver run down her spine, wondering what had triggered Zave's outburst. "Sorry," Zave muttered, pushing back his chair. "I need some air." As he strode out of the room, the tension seemed to dissipate slightly. Kala watched him go, feeling a pang of concern. What was wrong with him? And what was behind the secrets he'd been keeping? The rest of the meal was subdued, the family members eating in silence. Kala couldn't help but wonder what would happen next. Would Zave's outburst be the start of something bigger, or would things settle back down? As they finished dinner, Zave's mother forced a smile. "Let's clean up and forget about this, okay?" Kala nodded, helping to clear the table. But as they worked, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was brewing beneath the surface. Something that could change everything.
