The campus that buzzed with whispers and power during the day fell into an eerie quiet, the old stone buildings standing like silent watchers beneath the moonlight.
I pulled my sweater tighter around my shoulders as I walked along the dim garden path behind the library.
I hadn’t planned to be outside this late.
But after the extra attention… and Torin’s confrontation.. sleep had been impossible.
The fountain in the center of the courtyard trickled softly, reflecting the pale glow of the moon.
I sat on the cold stone edge, staring into the water.
“Couldn’t sleep either?”
I turned. Startled.
Selene Valemont stepped out from the shadows near the ivy-covered archway.
Selene was known for many things at Blackthorn: elegance, mystery, and the unsettling way she seemed to know everything before anyone else.
I blink in surprise.
“I didn’t hear you.” I say nervously.
Selene smiled faintly.
“Most people don’t.”
She walked closer, heels clicking softly against the stone.
“You’ve become very interesting this week, Zaria.”
I sighed.
“Is that what people are calling humiliation now?” I turn away, slight attitude trickling from my voice.
Selene tilted her head.
“Not humiliation.”
She gestured vaguely toward the academy buildings, as she walked out in front of me.
“Influence.”
“I don’t want influence.” frowning my face.
Selene laughed quietly.
“No one at Blackthorn ever asks for it.”
She reached into the pocket of her coat and pulled out a small black envelope.
The paper looked thick and expensive, sealed with a dark wax crest I didn’t recognize.
Selene extended her hand.
“For you.”
I hesitated before taking it.
“What is this?”
Her eyes glinted slightly.
“An invitation.”
“To what?”
Selene stepped closer, lowering her voice.
“There are two kinds of students at Blackthorn Academy.”
Our eyes met.
“The ones who follow the rules,” She continued.
“And the ones who make them.”
I felt a chill run through my body
The Elite Society?”
Selene nodded her head slowly.
“The elite society is performative.”
Her gaze flicked briefly toward the dark windows of the academy.
“The real power at Blackthorn operates in.. quieter places.”
looking down at the envelope again.
The wax seal bore the image of a thorned crown.
“Who are they?” I asked softly.
Selene smiled.
“You’ll find out.”
My pulse quickened.
“Why me?”
Selene chewed on the question a bit.
“Because the girl who walked into Blackthorn a week ago was invisible.”
Her voice lowered slightly.
“But the girl who stood in that hallway and shut Torin Harrington down in front of the entire academy… not to mention Kane too”
She leaned in slightly.
“…caught someone’s attention.”
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“Someone?”
Selene stepped back.
“You should open it cousin.” She said casually.
I carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was a single black card.
Written in elegant silver ink were just a few words.
Tomorrow.
After Midnight.
The West Tower.
Come Alone.
At the bottom of the card was the same thorned crown symbol.
looking up quickly.
“Selene..”
But Selene was already walking away.
“Wait,” I called.
She paused briefly under the archway.
“One piece of advice,” saying without turning around.
“Don’t tell Kane.”
My brows pulled together.
“Why?”
Glancing back over her shoulder.
Her smile was knowing.
“Because if they invited you without him…”
She paused.
“…they’re testing you.”
Then she disappeared into the shadows.
Voice fading. “See you at the midnight party”.
I stood alone in the courtyard, the invitation trembling slightly in my hand. Remembering Dad had mentioned this to me briefly in the past.
Across the academy grounds, the tall silhouette of the West Tower rose against the night sky.
Dark.
Silent.
Waiting.
And suddenly, I knew stepping into that tower would change everything at Blackthorn.
Forever.
FOUR DAYS LATER..
I stepped into the light like I belonged to the night itself. I refused to do anything else but that…especially since Selene’s words resonated with me so much.
My hair wasn’t in its usual long braid. Instead my long raven hair fell in soft, glossy curls down my back, catching the glow of the lanterns with every movement.
Against my smooth, sun-kissed skin, the dark sparkling dress clung perfectly to my body, accentuating the graceful lines of my waist and hips. A daring slit trailed up the side of the long gown, revealing elegant legs as the fabric shifted when I walked. There was something effortlessly sensual about the way I felt tonight… quiet confidence, striking beauty, and a magnetic presence that made it nearly impossible for anyone in the room not to look twice.
It was after midnight and like many times before the night air over Blackthorn Academy had a different feeling. Tonight more than any others.
The Midnight Party was already in full swing when I stepped into the courtyard.
Golden lights hung between the oak trees as music drifted through the night, socialites in glittering dresses and sharp suits mingling with soft laughter and clinking glasses.
It was the kind of night Blackthorn was famous for.
Beautiful.
Decadent.
And full of people watching each other. Watching me. So I held my head high.
Tessa found me and linked my arm as we walked down the stone steps.
“Tonight is going to be chaos,” she whispered excitedly.
I raised an eyebrow.
“When is it not?”
Tessa grinned.
“Fair point.”
Across the courtyard, familiar faces from the elite society had already gathered around the main fountain.. Sebastian Langley, Selene, who I glanced over at quickly, then broke the stare.. Camille Deveraux, and a few others.
But one person was noticeably missing.
I tried not to notice.
I picked up a drink from a passing tray and leaned against the railing beside Tessa.
“So,” Tessa said, scanning the crowd, “are we pretending you’re not waiting for someone?”
“I’m not waiting.”
“Uh-huh he doesn’t come to these things anyway”
Before I could respond..
A ripple moved through the crowd near the entrance gates.
turning heads and whispers spread quickly.
“Is that..”
“No way.”
“He actually came?”
I followed their gaze.
And there he was.
Ryker Kane walking into the courtyard with Julian, Adrian, and Luca beside him, dressed in a dark suit that somehow made him look even more dangerous than usual.
“How the hell is that even possible?” I thought to myself.
And now eyes are no longer on me, because I’m not the only one watching when he enters the room.
Tessa grabbed my arm again.
“Oh my god.”
Keeping my face calm.
“Relax.” I whispered to her.
“You didn’t tell me he was coming.”
“I had an idea, but I didn’t know for sure”
Across the courtyard, Ryker’s eyes scanned the party briefly.
Adrian leaned over to whisper in his ear…and.
Then they found me.
His expression softened slightly.
But before he could move toward me..
A tall blonde girl stepped directly into his path.
I recognized her vaguely.
A fourth year.
The girl smiled brightly at Ryker, leaning a little too close as she spoke to him.
Tessa gasped.
“Oh this b***h is brave.”
I watched the interaction quietly.
The girl laughed at something Ryker said, placing her hand lightly on his arm.
Keeping his hands inside his pockets he glanced down at her hand and raised an eyebrow.
Tessa turned to me.
“Are you not seeing this?”
I took a calm sip of my drink.
“I Am”
“And you’re not going to do anything?”
“What exactly would I do?”
“Mark your territory?”
“Like a dog??” laughing softly.
“I don’t need to.”
Tessa stared at me.
“That is suspiciously confident, and quite frightening if you ask me”.
Across the courtyard, the blonde girl continued flirting shamelessly.
But I only smiled faintly.
Finally I set my drink down.
“Excuse me.”
Tessa blinked.
“Wait… where are you going?”
“To save her.”
“Save who?”
“The girl.”
Tessa looked confused as Zaria walked calmly across the courtyard.
I approached just as the girl finished another dramatic laugh.
The blonde turned slightly, noticing me.
“Oh,” she said politely. “Hi.”
I smiled warmly.
“Hi.”
I glanced at Ryker briefly.
“Sorry to interrupt.”
The girl waved her hand dismissively.
“Oh no, we were just talking.” Saying casually as if she didn’t know who I was.
I nodded.
“I could tell.”
leaning slightly toward the girl with a friendly smile.
“You’re doing great, by the way.”
The girl blinked.
“…What?”
I gestured lightly toward Ryker.
“It’s not easy impressing him.”
Ryker let out a quiet laugh beside us, I paid him no attention.
The girl looked between us, confused.
I continued pleasantly.
“But unfortunately…”
stepping closer to Ryker.
“…he doesn’t have a lot of patience.”
The girl’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Oh.”
“Mhm hmm”
Ryker slipped his arm casually around my waist.
“Oh I see”.
The girl flushed, suddenly embarrassed.
She quickly excused herself and disappeared back into the crowd.
Ryker watched her go before glancing down at me.
“You handled that well.”
I shrugged.
“She seemed nice.”
“You don’t get jealous do you?”
“Should I have?”
Ryker studied me carefully. Standing up straight.
“No.”
“I didn’t think so, I trust you.”
Turning to walk away I barely made it three feet before his hand caught my wrist.
He didn’t pull me roughly, but there was no mistaking the control in the way his fingers wrapped around my arm, guiding me into the darker alcove between two towering columns.
“Running away already?” he murmured.
I smiled and tried to tug my arm back. “I’m not running.”
His jaw tightened slightly, dark eyes scanning my face like he was trying to read every thought I had.
“You’re a terrible liar Vale.”he spoke softly as he let my hand go.
I crossed my arms, lifting my chin. “Maybe I just didn’t feel like standing in a room full of people who spent the last two years worshipping a relationship that clearly didn’t exist.”
For a moment, something dangerous flickered across Ryker’s expression at the mention of Torin.
But it faded just as quickly.
His gaze softened-just a little.
“You’re letting him get in your head.”
“I’m not,” I said quietly.
Ryker stepped closer.
His voice slightly a whisper
“Yeah,” he said lowly, studying again. “You are.”
For a moment, Ryker didn’t say anything. Just thought about what she’d been through these past few weeks. Still managing to keep it together.
The air shifted with the movement, tension tightening between them again like a pulled wire.
My breath caught when his hand lifted slightly, brushing a loose strand of hair from my shoulder. The touch was light, but it sent heat racing up my spine.
“Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that”
The words hung heavy between us.
My heart pounded so loudly I was sure he could hear it.
“It’s fine.. you’re right”
His eyes dropped to my lips for a split second before pulling them up to look into my eyes.
“You know..” he began speaking again “You grew up with us,” he continued. “You know exactly what Blackthorn is. The games. The alliances. The way people use each other.”
“Yeah, so”
“And yet,” he said, voice darkening, “you stayed here like you still believe in something better.”
I swallowed.
“Maybe I do.”
He stared at me for a long moment, something almost conflicted passing through his expression.
Then his hand slowly pulled mine down.
“You’re going to get destroyed here, Zaria.”
I held his gaze.
“Then why do you keep looking at me like you won’t let that happen?”
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, but there was nothing playful about it.
“Because,” he said quietly, leaning closer until his voice brushed against my ear, “if anyone’s going to ruin you…”
“…it’s going to be me.”
My breath hitched.
And now since returning to Blackthorn, I wasn’t sure if Ryker was just a warning…
or the most dangerous temptation of all.
The music played softly behind us while couples began drifting toward the dance floor.
He held his hands out, “Dance with me”
Laughing lightly “ what?”
“Dance with me”.
“ I don’t. Really dance, it’s been a while.”
“ It can’t be be much harder than Capoeira”
My brows furrowed “How did you-“
“I know a lot of things” Taking my hand, he led me towards the soft music.
We danced for a little while, and I looked at my feet until I got the hang of things, making sure I didn’t step on his feet.
His hand flexed over my lower back where the dress couldn’t cut any lower. The warmth of his hand on my skin set my core on fire as his ring and pinky fingers practically grazed my ass. Eyes never leaving my face.
“Focus Zaria”.. I thought to myself.
Finally he spoke.
“You really trust me?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
His expression changed
“You look absolutely stunning tonight”.
“Thank you” I said, heat rising to my face.
He pulled me a little closer.
“You’re dangerous, you know that? and sometimes you drive me completely me insane” frowning his face.
I smiled. My expression more feline “Tell me more”.
“I’m serious.. Zari..” turning his head away from me for the first time.
I stared at him.
waiting a moment..
“How so?”
He blew out a breath and turned his attention back toward me.
“Half of the time I can’t even focus when you’re near,” he continued, his voice rougher now, “and when we’re not in the same room, it’s worse.”
My brows pulled together. “Ryker-”
“My mind keeps wandering back to you,” he finished quietly. “Like it belongs to you now… whether I want it to or not. Most try to control everything at Blackthorn”
“And I don’t?” I retorted.
“No.” He said, almost argumentative.
He brushed his thumb lightly along my back.
“I keep expecting you to run in fear, but you don’t”
My heart skipped.
“That’s only because I know you.”
Ryker’s gaze softened in a way it rarely did.
The noise of the party faded slightly as he looked down at me.
“Zari…”
I tilted my head.
“What?”
His voice lowered.
“I think I’ve been trying to figure something out for a while.”
“Figure out what?”
He took a quiet breath.
“How someone like you managed to get past every wall I’ve ever built for years. “It’s crazy”.
My pulse quickened.
“Ryker…”
He shook his head slightly, almost amused with himself.
“You’re not even trying. And somehow that makes it f*****g worse.”
My look concerning, and my thoughts raced..” Is he pushing me away?”
“You’re being very dramatic tonight.”
“Probably.”
He looking directly into my eyes.
“But I wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true, I’d just be lying to myself”
My heart pounded as he continued.
“I love you… ..I always have. Since I was ten years old.. and I probably always will”.He shook his head.
The words settled between us quietly.
For once, Ryker Kane didn’t look in control.
warmth spread through my chest as it heaved.
“But you already knew that, didn’t you?”
Shaking my head lightly in confirmation I spoke.
“ Ryker I-“
“ You don’t have to say anything Zaria, I just needed to say it”
“Because I’m not planning on going anywhere.”
“Okay”.
Ryker Blew a breath quietly and pulled Zaria into his arms.
Across the courtyard, Tessa watched the scene unfold with wide eyes.
She grabbed Julian’s arm.
“Did he just confess his love in the middle of the Midnight Party?”
Julian smirked looking down at her hands.
“Yep, finally”.
Tessa sighed dramatically
“I love this school.”
