The rest of the drive was quiet.
A few hours later, the weather changed.
Dark clouds appeared in the sky.
A cold wind began blowing.
I crossed my arms.
Adam noticed.
"You're cold."
"I'm fine."
"You are clearly not fine."
He pulled the car over near a*****e.
"Wait here."
He entered the store.
A few minutes later, he returned carrying a shopping bag.
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a beautiful black coat.
I stared at it.
"Sir..."
"Put it on."
"This is too expensive."
"It's a coat, Nora."
"I can't accept something this expensive."
"It's a gift."
"Why?"
He looked at me.
"Because you're cold."
I didn't know what to say.
I put the coat on.
It was warm.
And it smelled faintly like his cologne.
I looked away quickly.
"Thank you."
He nodded.
"You're welcome."
Later that evening, heavy rain began.
The roads became difficult to drive on.
Adam slowed the car.
"We need to stop."
"Where?"
"There's a hotel nearby."
My heart immediately started racing.
A hotel?
I swallowed.
When we arrived, Adam checked in.
I followed him nervously.
He took the room keys.
Then he walked down the hallway.
He stopped in front of one door.
He opened it.
"This is your room."
I stared at him.
"My room?"
"Yes."
I looked at the room.
Then at him.
"Aren't we staying together?"
Adam shook his head.
"No."
He looked away.
"We shouldn't."
I didn't understand.
"Why?"
He remained silent for a moment.
Then he said,
"Because I don't want you to think that I expect anything from you."
I looked at him.
He continued.
"Whatever happens between us has to be your choice."
My heart softened.
Adam handed me the key.
"Goodnight, Nora."
He walked away.
I stood there watching him.
For the first time, I began to understand.
Adam wasn't trying to force himself into my life.
He was waiting.
Waiting for me to choose him.
And that realization scared me more than anything.
Because deep inside...
I was beginning to wonder if I already had.
