He remembered their first time here, the first time he and Ray walked into the dilapidated cabin to scout the lab and the space where they would spend their servitude. A stern military-type had led the tour. Decked out in head-to-toe tactical gear, as if the boys were terrorists suspected of setting a bomb, his presence tempered Steve’s excitement over working with state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge research. If only Steve’s insatiable curiosity hadn’t been so unwieldy, Steve wondered if they’d be in this mess. Maybe it wasn’t Ray’s father’s fault they were here.
