“I can’t believe they fell asleep so fast,” Marsha said, as she and Mike carried the twins in from the car. “They took a pretty long nap today.”
“At least they waited until after we went to the store to fall asleep. Do you just want to put them on the couch for now? Just until we get the car unloaded.” Mike asked.
“Yes. Then we can wake them. You know they love helping put groceries away. So, how much is Mr. Jones selling the farm for?” Marsha asked, curiously.
“He never said. He just told me that he was selling it and that he was giving us first go at it. He never mentioned a price, thinking back to the conversation he had had with Mr. Jones.
“Well, I think I still have his number. So, maybe one day next week I can give him a call and we can meet up with him. You know, sit down and go over details with him. What day would you want to do that?” Marsha asked Mike as they headed back out to the car to start bringing groceries in.
“Probably Frid...,” Mike’s answer was cut off by the sound of the twin’s terrified screams coming from the house.
They both turned and ran back inside to where they had laid the boys on the couch just moments before. The boys were no longer on the couch, but in the corner of the living room closest to the kitchen, shaking in fear and staring at a spot between the couch and the coffee table. Mike ran to the spot thinking maybe a bug or small animal had gotten into the house while the front door was open. But he didn’t see anything of that sort, all he saw was a strange wet spot on the floor right where the boys were staring.
Mike let out a sigh of relief before saying to the boys, “It’s okay, boys. It is just water. Nothing to be afraid of. But where did the water come from?” He looked around for the source of the water but didn’t see any obvious places.
“Daddy, make the scary man leave!” Ryan yelled, beginning to cry.
“What scary man, Ryan?” Marsha asked, trying to comfort her terrified sons. But they wouldn’t take their eyes off the wet spot, or at least the air above it.
“Daddy, be careful, he is right in front of you!” Ralph yelled. Mike watched as the wet spot seemed to turn around, as if someone with wet feet were turning. “No!” Ralph screamed. He ran at Mike, straight through the wet spot. As soon as his little arms were around his father’s leg, the spot disappeared completely.
Mike and Marsha just stared at each other in complete shock as they continued to hug the boys.
