Chapter 3

610 Words
Mike got home early that day. He hadn’t really been able to focus on anything that day, other than his high school reunion and the tribute that his classmates were going to do in Ralph’s memory. After staring at the same blueprint for 30 minutes, he finally gave up trying to focus. He put his foremen, Jason, in charge for the rest of the day. Then he headed home. When he arrived, Marsha was just getting the boys up from their naps. “What do you think, Honey? Do you think that they are awake enough for a trip to the park?” He asked as the boys sleepily wiped their eyes. At the word park, both boys perked up. “Please, mom. Can we go to the park with dad?” they asked excitedly. “Since you boys have been so good, why don’t we all go? Then maybe we can go out for pizza and ice cream for dinner if you continue to be good?” Marsha asked, looking at Mike, who nodded his head in agreement. “Yeah! We promise to be good,” the boys said in unison. “Come on, Ralph, let’s go get our shoes on,” said Ryan, leading his brother down the hall towards the living room. “Okay,” Ralph said, letting Ryan lead him. “I am guessing you guys had a good day?” asked Mike as he stepped over to her wrapped his arms around her. He squeezed her tight and gave her a kiss, “I love you.” “I love you, too. And yes, the boys were very good today. They even helped me clean up their toys in the living room before their nap,” Marsha said, settling into Mike’s embrace and laying her head on his chest. “My mom called today.” “Oh, how is she doing? Everything okay?” Mike asked. “She is doing okay. She actually called about the high school reunion. She got an invite as well. The class president would like her present for the tribute to Ralph,” Marsha said, glancing up at his face. “That was sweet of them, but I doubt that your mom would go. She could barely stand to go to our graduation at the school, remember? And the school had postponed our ceremony for almost two months in hopes that Ralph would be able to walk with us,” Mike said. “Actually, she is thinking seriously about going,” Marsha said, watching Mike’s face carefully. “Really?” Mike asked shocked. “Yeah, she is. But she says that she is more thinking about going because of an email she received from the detective that has been working Ralph’s case since he went missing,” Marsha said, as the boys came running back down the hallway. “Ok, we have our shoes on. Can we go to the park now?” They asked. “Please?” “Let daddy go change out of his work clothes while you boys help me figure out what all we need from the store,” Marsha said, reaching for each boy’s hand. “Aww, we have to go to the store?” Ryan whined. “After we go to the park, yes we have to go to the store,” Marsha said. She headed down the hall towards the kitchen. Mike turned and headed down the hall to their bedroom. He knew that Marsha would finish talking to him at the park. But still, what could that detective have emailed her mom about? He thought to himself as he changed his clothes.
