Rise of connection

The afternoon sun filtered through the branches of a huge, old oak tree at the edge of the park, scattering golden light over the grass. A gentle breeze carried the laughter of children playing in the distance and the faint scent of flowers from nearby bushes. The group had claimed a large patch of soft grass under the tree, blankets and snacks spread out in casual disorder. Septo was lying back, eyes half-closed, mumbling something about needing a nap. Rian and Dev were tossing a frisbee lazily. Lina sat cross-legged, quietly reading a book but keeping one sharp eye on the chaos. Mira, however, was far too energetic to stay quiet for long. “You know,” Mira began, stretching dramatically, “I just realized something we *totally forgot* to talk about yesterday!” Shon froze mid-bite of his sandwich. “Uh-oh…” he muttered. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing scary,” Mira said, ignoring him. “It’s about *you*, Shon!” He swallowed and glanced nervously at Kuroi, who was reclining against the tree trunk, curious eyes following every movement. Mira turned to the group. “You all know that our dear Shon isn’t just a quiet guy, right?” Septo stirred, opening one eye. “I thought that was his main talent.” Rian snickered. “Yeah, blending into the background.” “Shut up,” Shon muttered, hiding behind his sandwich. “Anyway,” Mira continued, undeterred, “he used to be amazing in school. Singing, musical instruments, chess, sports… basically, the definition of talented. He could dominate anything he tried. Literally everything. And yes, he had a pretty solid muscular build back then too.” Shon’s ears turned red instantly. “I-I don’t know if—” “Stop hiding, Shon!” Mira laughed. “Everyone should know what a legend you are.” Kuroi’s eyes widened. “Wait… you mean all of this was you? You were really good at all that?” Shon shifted uncomfortably. “Well… maybe a little. I just… liked trying things.” Lina, still calm and composed, looked up from her book, eyebrow raised. “A little? You make it sound like you were just average. Sounds like you were a prodigy.” “Exactly!” Mira exclaimed. “He could sing, play the piano, guitar, drums, chess… basically, if there was a competition, Shon probably won it. And don’t even get me started on the sports—he was dominant.” Shon hid his face in his hands, mumbling, “You’re all exaggerating…” Kuroi laughed softly. “Wow… I had no idea. That’s… impressive.” Septo finally sat up, stretching. “Told you, man. You’re more than you let on.” Shon could only manage a small, shy smile, feeling both embarrassed and a little proud. --- The group fell into a comfortable silence for a few moments, listening to the wind rustle through the oak’s leaves. Mira broke it again, tilting her head at Kuroi. “What about you, Kuroi? You never told us your dreams.” Kuroi shifted slightly, looking down at her hands. “Well… I’ve always wanted to be a singer. I just… never really had the courage to perform in front of people.” “Oh!” Mira exclaimed, clapping her hands. “I knew it! That explains why you hum all the time!” Rian whistled. “Seriously? That’s awesome.” “Yeah,” Lina added quietly, closing her book, “then you should definitely work on it. And, well…” She looked at Shon, then at Kuroi. “Shon has the skills to help you — with singing, rhythm, instruments… he could guide you.” Shon froze, eyes wide. “Me…? Help her?” Kuroi looked at him, her eyes soft and hopeful. “You’d… help me?” Shon scratched the back of his neck, feeling a blush creep up his cheeks. “I-I… sure. I can… try.” Mira squealed, jumping up. “Yes! Finally! This is perfect! The talented Shon helping the lovely Kuroi achieve her dream!” Septo high-fived Rian. “It’s happening!” Shon groaned but couldn’t hide the small, shy smile tugging at his lips. Kuroi’s gentle smile in return made his heart race. “I… I’ll do my best,” he said quietly, more to himself than anyone else. “You’ll be great together,” Lina said, her voice calm but approving. “Just focus on practice and supporting each other. That’s how it works.” Kuroi nodded, a little shyly. “Thanks… Shon. I really mean it.” He looked at her, unsure how to respond, and simply nodded, feeling a strange warmth spread through him. For a moment, the rest of the world didn’t exist — just her smile, the soft rustle of the tree leaves, and the quiet afternoon sunlight. Mira, unable to resist, teased again. “Okay, lovebirds! Don’t faint on me yet — the training starts tomorrow!” Shon groaned. “Mira—” Septo laughed, clapping him on the back. “Don’t worry, man. It’s gonna be fun. And maybe… your heart will do all the singing, too.” Kuroi blushed at the comment, glancing away, but her smile lingered. Shon felt his own heart skip a beat, realizing just how much this small moment meant. As the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows over the grass, the group continued chatting and laughing. But Shon couldn’t stop thinking about Kuroi — her dream, her smile, and now, somehow, the way their paths were starting to intertwine.
