Chapter 2

Dimitri POV “Has anyone gone missing from here lately?” I asked the bartender, if anyone knows anything it’s a bartender and hairdressers, but I’m not going in there. “Well now that you mention it yeah, a few people actually” he said filling up my beer “We had some folks go missing over the past 4 years” he said scratching his chin in thought “How many?” I asked and he narrowed his eyes at me “You a cop or something?” he asked suspiciously “Not a cop, just an investigator of sorts” I said looking him dead in the eye. He nodded slowly “Like a private investigator?” he asked leaning back “Yes something like that” I said firmly. It’s not a total lie “Hhmm, well you should talk to Mila then. Her brother went missing a little over a year ago” he said and I nodded “Where can I find her?” I asked and he looked at his watch “She’ll be here in about an hour. She works night shift tonight” he said and moved away to another patron. I got comfortable and waited for Mila. About 45 minutes later the bar was filling up and then the most wonderful smell hit my nose. Lavender and honey. I glanced around trying to find the source but they were mostly men. The smell kept getting stronger and I stood up sniffing the air but the next moment the most beautiful voice spoke up behind me “Hey, Bert said you wanted to see me. Are you the PI?” I spun around and my eyes grew wide. Before me was the most amazing creature I’ve ever seen. She had big hazel eyes, with strawberry blonde hair tied back into a ponytail. Her face could only be described as that of an angel, her lips pink and plump. Her slender figure made my heart race, she had the most perfect light tone skin, not pale but not too tanned. f**k she’s perfect, my beloved. Her eyes searched mine, waiting for my answer but I only nodded. I didn’t trust my voice. “Okaay. So you have me for 10 minutes before I start my shift. So what do you wanna know?” she said crossing her arms. I blinked a few times before clearing my throat, struggling to tear my eyes away from her. “Yes I uhm, heard your brother is missing. Can you tell me more about his disappearance?” I asked averting my eyes to my hands. I’ll lose my nerve, and she smells human so I’ll only scare her. She sighed and sat down next to me “Look, I can’t pay you. I’m barely making ends meet right now and I have my little sister to care for as well. So if this is about mon-“ I cut her off “No payment needed miss Mila, my friend and I are looking into multiple disappearances and Bert said I should ask you. About your brother I mean” I said looking at my empty beer glass as if it’s the most interesting thing in the world. She got up and walked around the bar, grabbed my glass and refilled it. Placing it in front of me “Well I will need to look you in the eyes” she said firmly and I gulped. Goddess she’s tough. But I compelled myself to look at her and again my breath hitched, her scent engulfing me. “That’s better, now my brother went missing just over a year ago. He was going for an interview at the shipyard but never came home. We searched for weeks, after about two months the police gave up, they said he ran away but I know he wouldn’t just leave us. I had to leave college to take care of my sister and my mom. Mom passed about 6 months ago, so now it’s just us, Katie and me. But I believe Gary is out there, he’s still alive” her voice becoming soft at the end. I wanted to pull her into a hug and kiss her pain away but I knew I couldn’t. She won’t understand this. Goddess now I know how the king felt with the queen. So I did the next best thing, I gently took her hand and the sparks ran through my arm, her hand jerked when we touched. She felt it too. “It’s okay Mila, we’re trying to find them. Do you have a picture of him?” I asked not letting her hand go. She nodded letting go of my hand and pulled out her phone, scrolled and turned the screen toward me. The man next to her looked a lot like her, he only had light brown hair but the resemblance was there. “May I?” I asked holding out my hand to take her phone, she nodded and handed me the phone. I took a picture with mine and tapped back to the home screen. I entered my number and gave it back to her. “Dimitri, that’s a very interesting name. Where you from?” she asked and I looked down. “Far from here” I simply said. She made a scoffing noise drawing my eyes back to hers. “Yeah I gathered Sherlock, that’s why I asked. I haven’t seen guys like you around for a while.” She said wiping down the bar “Guys like me?” I asked “Yeah, you know. Big, strong, handsome with the impossible white hair. Tell me are those your natural eyes or do you wear contacts?” she asked leaning forward, her cleavage now a little exposed. I swallowed hard and glanced back at her face “No, natural. These guys you’re talking about when did you last see them?” I asked trying not to wipe at the sweat forming on the side of my face “Oh I don’t know 3 or 4 months back. They usually come in, have a few beers and lunch and then leave. They tip very well so I never complain” she said replacing my beer. I downed it, why am I so nervous? “I see, how many of them?” I ask before taking another big gulp “Well sometimes 4 other times 5. But they don’t have violet eyes, theirs are more yellowy.” She said and I knew she was talking about uncovented vampires. Dangerous bastards. “I see. Well miss Mila thank you for everything maybe I’ll see you around” I said getting up and placing some bills on the counter before bowing my head slightly at her, giving her my best and brightest smile and heading toward the door. “Hey Dimitri!” she yelled and I stopped dead in my tracks, turning around slowly “Yes miss Mila?” I asked as she walked up to me. “Don’t you want your change? It’s like way too much.” She said holding out the cash. I gently enclosed my hand over hers holding the cash and smiled “No you keep it. Buy your sister something sweet, I know mine always had a sweet tooth” I said winking and bowing down to kiss her knuckles. She stood there mouth agape but her eyes were kind and a slight sign of sadness. “Thanks” she said in a soft voice stuffing the money in her back pocket. I smiled again and left my heart breaking with each step. When I entered the room Cayden was on his bed watching tv. “Hey bro” he said flipping from one channel to the next. I sat down on my bed smiling like a goofball “Hey” I said with a sigh, he sat up and looked at me “What’s up?” he asked switching off the tv and turning to me “I found her” I said looking out the window “My beloved” I said looking at him. His face lit up and he jumped off the bed fist pumping the air “That’s amazing brother! Congratulations!” he all but yelled fist bumping me. I chuckled and nodded “Yeah, it’s just…” I trailed off and he sat down again slowly “She’s not taken is she? Or worse married?” he asked his body shaking with a chill “No she’s not, well I don’t think so. But she’s human” I said looking down “Oh, well that’s not too bad. You can turn her and boom happily ever after right?” he said excitedly but I just shook my head no “She has a little sister, and her brother is one of the missing people. So this situation is not ideal” I said defeated. “Hey no man, you’re overthinking this. One problem at a time, let’s get her to fall for you first. We can figure out the rest as we go along okay?” he said looking at me intently “Yeah maybe you’re right. As long as she doesn’t reject me then we’re good right?” I said trying to convince myself. “That’s it, so tell me what does she look like?’’ he asked very excited. But I just shook my head as the image of her beautiful face played over in my head “I’ll show you, tomorrow” I said and with that we spent the rest of the night exchanging information we gathered.   Cayden POV The next morning we got up and again split up to try and find more information about the missing people. We agreed to meet up at the bar once he knew when Mila would be there. So I made my way through the streets stopping every so often asking around if someone knew anything. My eye caught a missing persons poster in a flower shop window so I entered and found out the person was the owners cousin. Same story, went for an interview and never came back. “Someone is taking these people. But why? There’s no specific age group, race or gender preference, nothing. They all had different jobs or interviews for different ones. No connections” Nima said as I made my way to the bar. “I don’t get it either, it’s like they just disappeared into thin air. No motive, none of them has a history of crime or drugs. Some have financial issues, but who doesn’t?” I answered back. Walking through the door of the bar I spotted Dimitri sitting at one of the tables a slender girl with strawberry blonde hair chatting with him. I walked over and took a seat. She is beautiful, he’s a lucky man. I thought smiling “Hey I’m Mila, you must be Dimitri’s friend” she said extending her hand. I stood up and took her hand gently kissing her knuckles “Pleased to meet you miss Mila, I’m Cayden” I said not missing the small blush on her cheeks “So regal, both of you. So what can I get you?” she asked readying her writing pad, we ordered the house special and she smiled and left “Wow bro, she’s beautiful” I whispered once she was out of ear shot “I know. She’s perfect” he sighed again. He’s already whipped “So ask her out” I nudged him and he scowled at me “How do I do that? She’ll think I’m a stalker or something” he whisper yelled at me “No she won’t. You said she had a little sister?” I asked leaning back and he nodded yes. A mischievous grin spread on my face, Dimitri on the other hand started shaking his head “No, nope. No way Cay. I know that look, please don’t” he begged but I just kept on smiling. Mila returned with our orders and we thanked her digging in. He kept on giving me warning looks but I brushed him off. When she came back to take our plates I smiled up at her. Charm mode engaged “Miss Mila, can I ask you a personal question?” my best toothy grin plastered on my face. Dimitri looked panicked but she nodded “He told me about your brother, I’m sorry about that, but he mentioned your sister. How old is she if you don’t mind me asking?” I asked sincerely “She’s 11. She was a whoopsie, if you know what I mean” she said smiling “Wow, so you look after her alone? Where’s your dad?” I asked and Dimitri kicked me under the table but I kept my gaze on her “He left after Katie was born. Probably ran away because of his responsibilities, didn’t even contact us after. So it was just us 4, well now 2 I guess” sadness crossing her face at her last words. I nudged Dimitri’s shoulder gesturing to her. He shot up and took her hand in his “We’ll find Gary. I will make it my personal mission my- Mila” he quickly corrected himself. She gave him a genuine smile “Thank you. Thank you both so much” she said looking between us. I cleared my throat “So is there anything fun to do around here? Tomorrow is Saturday so you want to show us around a bit?” I asked her she smiled but Dimitri tried to fry my face with a glare “Well, I have Sunday off if you don’t mind waiting an extra day” she said and he beamed with happiness “Sure, where and what time do we pick you up?” he asked quickly before I could do anymore “damage”. I just chuckled “I’ll phone you. But my sister will be tagging along if that’s okay?” she asked shyly “That’s perfect. We both have younger sisters and my little brother is 13 now so we are used to kids” I said standing up and giving her a huge tip. She looked at the money and back at me “No this is too much please” she said but I held up my hand “Buy yourself something nice for Sunday” I said bowing slightly before heading out the door. A few minutes later Dimitri joined me and landed a punch on my shoulder “Ouch! What gives?” I asked rubbing my shoulder “I nearly had a f*****g heart attack you i***t! What were you thinking?!” he whisper yelled and I broke out in a fit of laughter “It’s not funny, come on” he grumbled and we left for the place we’re staying at.
