Nelly POV
The car drove past through a giant gate, taller than any one I had ever seen back in Braze Rock.
I pressed my hand against the window and stared.
Lion Heart had a massive land with a huge house standing in the middle of it.
Tall stone walls surrounded the house. The front was covered with large, shiny windows, and flowers grew in neat rows around the garden.
It looked nothing like Rose's house.
There were no wild bushes. No broken paths. No old walls covered with dirt.
Everything was clean and was well taken care of.
My chest felt tight.
This was not just a home.
It was a completely different world.
The car stopped.
I opened the door and stepped out slowly. My legs were still stiff from everything that had happened at the battlefield. My body hurt, and my torn dress was still covered in dirt.
Several warriors stood near the entrance.
They watched me.
Not one of them smiled.
They stared at me in amazement and I didn't know if there was more to it or if it was just due to how unkept I was.
I saw how one young warrior standing near the gate had leaned toward his friend and whispered something to his hearing.
I heard him.
"Braze Rock."
Then he added,
"Unworthy."
My face became hot.
The warrior noticed me looking at him and quickly turned away.
I swallowed the hurt and kept walking.
At least if there is one thing I had learnt all the years I had lived with my mom, that is how to stay strong even in the face of trials, and tribulations.
“No matter how cold and cruel they might be, they can't break me because I have survived worse situations.”That was my belief.
So I remained focused on where I was going.
J.J. was already walking ahead of us and did not for once look back.
But when he finally got to the entrance of the main building, he stopped and waited while we approached.
His eyes were cold.
"Your room is over there.
“You have to wait here. While I send somebody who will take you there.” He said.
"Alpha J.J..." I called
Then she stopped and looked at me,
For one second, our eyes met.
Then his face became even harder.
"There is nothing else to say, Nelly."
His voice was rough.
"This marriage only happened because the council forced it. You know that. Nothing more."
I had nothing to say again.
"While you are here you will have to live by the rule of this pack."
That was all he said to me, then walked straight to his chamber.
It wasn’t long until a young woman, I believed to be one of the omegas, finally walked toward me.
"This way," she said calmly.
I followed her.
She led me to the room and opened it for me.
“Thank you” I said. She nodded and walked away.
I was speechless, because the room was so large, beyond my expectations.
A big foam was laid there against the floor, with a soft and clean blanket.
Everything looked clean and new.
I sat on the bed and pulled my bag to my side.
That was all I had.
A few dresses.
A hairbrush.
A few small things that belonged to me.
Nothing expensive.
Nothing special.
But they were mine.
I unzipped the bad and brought out all my things.
I hung a few of my clothes inside the wardrobe.
In the next few days, I kept my head down and worked.
I helped in the kitchen in every possible way I could without being asked to.
I cleaned the tables.
I scrub the floors.
If there is no other work to do, I must find something to keep myself busy with, because keeping my hands busy helps me overcome too much thinking.
At first, the staff barely spoke to me.
If there was any conversation going on in any room, if I entered, the conversation ended.
Whenever I pass them, some of them always look away.
But I remained patient, and gradually things started changing.
An older woman named Grace started talking to me.
One morning, she showed me where they kept different things. Where Alpha”s tea is kept.
"Don't use the one on the top shelf," "That one is for the Alpha." She said, I smiled.
"Thank you."
She smiled back.
"You're always welcome." She said.
That was the first friendly smile I ever got from someone ever since I arrived at Lion Heart.
Another day, a young Omega boy laughed at something I said, but quickly covered his mouth.
I looked at him.
"Why are you hiding your laugh?"
He looked surprised.
I smiled.
He laughed again.
Little by little, they started becoming friendly, they started teaching me certain things.
I learned where the cook kept the spices.
They showed me some places.
The pack slowly started changing from what it used to feel like, Prison.
But J.J. maintained his distance from me.
Sometimes I saw him walking across the grounds.
Sometimes he stood with his warriors, talking quietly.
But he never looked my way.
Not once.
But I tried to stay strong and not let it bother me much.
One night, I fell asleep as usual then she appeared again.
The woman from my dreams.
She stood in a place I did not recognize.
Her face was soft.
Her eyes were sad.
This time she held something in her hand that looked like a necklace.
"You must find out who you truly are.The mark on your arm is your identity. When the time comes a helper will come your way, only then will you find out who you truly are."
I reached toward her.
I tried to touch her.
But before my fingers could reach her, I woke up.
I sat up quickly.
My heart was beating fast.
The room was dark.
I wrapped my arms around myself.
"Who she was and what the mark signifies is what I didn't, and that is what she has been telling me each time she appears to me in my dream. But what I kept wondering was why dreams feel so real.
I stared at my arm.
The mark.
The same mark my mother had always refused to explain.
"Who else am I if not Nelly Mac?" I whispered.
"Rose's daughter. The wolfless girl everyone in Braze Rock knows."
But the words did not comfort me.
They only made me more confused.
Even my mom's friend, whom I didn't know, also recognized the mark.
She had confessed knowing what the mark means.
My mother was always afraid whenever I asked about it.
And now this woman in my dreams was telling me that the mark was connected to who I really was.
I could no longer ignore it.
Something was wrong.
I got out of bed and walked toward the window.
Once things get better between me and J.J., I would need his help to find my answers..
He was an Alpha. He knew people from many packs.
Maybe he could help me find someone who knew what the mark meant.
And I would not stop until I had my answers.
I opened the window slightly.
Cool air touched my face.
Then I heard voices.
I froze.
The voices came from somewhere near the garden below.
I jumped down from the bed again and then walked slowly to the window.
I looked out of the window.
I saw an image standing under a garden in the garden.
“Hey!, Nelly. If you are there I want you to listen to what I have to tell you.”
That male voice.
My mind skipped,
“Who are you and how?
And how did you know my name?
“Forget about my name, I just listen to what I have for you.
I kept quiet but in my quietness I was still wondering who he was, but I listened.
"You see that war between Braze Rock and Lion's heart, it wasn't real," his voice said softly.
"It was not real, it was made up by Elder Eke to force Alpha J.J. into accepting marrying you before anybody could stop you. He planned it well to it look real"
It was like a movie to me, that I didn't want to believe it, but then I remembered the things he said in that hall.
"But why me? Why would he choose to do this to me?" I asked.
I can't reveal all that to you tonight.
"Just be careful who you trust here. Watch the council. Eke never does anything without a reason."
"Not tonight," the voice said.
I moved closer to the window. "Wait…" shouted in a low tone.
But before I could know it, he was already gone, like he was never there at all.
Then I thought that it was over but Little did know that, it wouldn't be the last time I would see him calling in the dark.
