The moment I asked for a deal, he looked at me like I was saying something absurd.
"Do you even have something you can exchange for a deal with me?" There was a smug sneer on his lips.
"Shouldn't you at least hear what I have to say first?"
He didn't even honour me a reply.
The royals here were definitely extremely uncultured and mean.
I didn't mind him, no I couldn't afford to. "Help me meet a witch that has lived long enough to have much knowledge about my kind and in exchange I'll owe you a favour"
He scoffed, "What favour can you possibly do for me that I can't get done?"
Right, I knew this was going to be tough, he was a prince and I had nothing to offer him but still, I needed his help.
"I can ask for anything irrespective of what you have to do to get it done for me?" I didn't miss the glint in his eyes when he asked this, but I didn't care.
If I could gain back my power, then kill the king, I'll gladly take fall for anything that comes my way.
"Yes!" I answered my eyes shooting stars.
"You can't go back on your words,Be up tonight" that was all he said before leaving promptly.
********
I've made sure there was no one in my room since the sunset by dismissing everyone with an excuse that I was tired and needed sleep.
There were no signs of the prince who I have learnt was king Xander's step brother, even after waiting for about two hours he was nowhere in sight, I was restless but still hopeful that maybe he was caught up with something. By midnight there was no signs of him and I resigned to the fact that he dumped me.
I laid restless on the bed, my mind reflecting everything that has happened to me so far, From being locked up in a tiny cell to being claimed as the King's mate then finding out he was my worst enemy who I have always dreamed to kill, Although he was my family's killer's son, I was sure he was no different from his father... The scene from earlier played on my mind.
I find myself remembering the very innocent looking Roy.
I couldn't help remembering his clueless eyes and then his distaste for his human side. I didn't know I was grinning widely until I turned to face the mirror beside my bed.
I made my way from the bed to sit in front of the mirror, examining my face. My hands traced the smile on my lips, when my eyes met the reflection of my neck, I recalled the tingling feeling of when the king had cradled my neck and inhaled so deeply like he couldn't get enough and when his... Mere collection of his hardness made me burn.
He was evidently big down there.
"God! Maeve what are you thinking about in this ungodly hour?"
I moved back to bed and just when I was dozing off, I heard the squeaking of a door handle and it sounded too close not to be my room's door.
It stopped for a second as if the person behind the door was hesitating but it was eventually opened and when it did, fear filled my insides.
I was not sure if I was to scream or hide or maybe put on some bravery and ask who it was, but I knew I couldn't do any of it when I realized I was too scared to even open my eyes.
What if it was another shadow monster?
It crossed my mind that it might be the prince who was supposed to have appeared a while ago but when whoever and whatever was in my room didn't make a noise. I was sure It wasn't anything Normal.
I opened my eyes last minute only to find the King's staring right back at me.
With a hand on my chest I sighed heavily, "You..."
"You weren't sleeping?" He c****d a brow in amusement.
"You came into the room like a thief!" I accused.
"Thief?"
True, that was ridiculous, how could the king be a thief.
I cleared my throat and pulled the blanket closer.
"It's the new year tomorrow"
I waited for him to continue,
"I would be leaving by day time, it's a customary law for every King to make it to the full moon banquet, the trip would go for three days"
I wasn't sure what I was supposed to say.
Have a safe trip? Or... Should I ask if he needed something for the trip? Ah... Why should I even be bothered?
But something about his slumped shoulders, made my heart beat faster, it felt like I was supposed to say something.
But I didn't know what that thing was.
There was a way he looked at me but I couldn't point it out, he was just not readable.
I gave up with the fight and just let the first word in my mind out.
"Is it a dangerous trip?"
He looked at me in surprise, "why would you think so?"
I shrugged and pointed out the fact that he was hesitating to leave.
"It's not me that might not be safe, but you"
"Me?" I asked out loud, wondering why I wouldn't be safe.
I thought Gwen said nobody could harm me because I was bearing the title of the King's mate.
As if reading my mind, he spoke.
"It might not be my people, but yours"
I was offended but if what he said about the shadow demon being made by the witches then there was truth in what he was saying.
There was still a lot I needed to know, including why the witches created the shadow demons and most importantly why it was haunting this palace.
"Do not go looking for trouble Maeve, you should stick close to Gwen. And... Do not trust anyone" and just like that he was off.
