Funeral

1528 Words
“Dela! Are you ready?” Joshua called from the bottom of the staircase. With the sky grey and the air cold it’s a befitting day for a funeral. If death made anything more apparent, its that the minute a loved one is gone regret sets in. Adela had no more tears left in her body for lost loved ones anymore. Tears are for people who still have hope and so she chose to use anger as an outlet for her grief and boy was there much to be angry about. Its as if Gaia herself made it Adela’s life purpose to suffer at the hands of loss, whether the person died or not. Each loss chipped away a piece of her, she felt less human each time. “Adela, if you continue to scowl your face will  begin to winkle” her mother commented. Ignoring her mother was her best way to preserve her patience. ‘I just have to get through this day’ adela thought to herself. “It’s a sad day but you have to look toward the future, Dela. You’re still planning a wedding. Joshua did you see the flowers she chose? What are your thoughts?” Margrette asked Adela’s fiancé. “Mother, I would like to grieve grandfather. Just one day without your bullshit is all I’m asking for” Through gritted teeth Adela responded in the best way she could. Her patience was on her last thread. But her and her brother Brandon only needed to get through the funeral. Then they would be able to execute their plan. Looking at Brandon, she realized he was the last little bit of joy in her life. She didn’t have hope for herself but she felt hope for him. Turning her head to the two front seats, Joshua in the drivers seat and her mother in the passengers, she felt numb towards them. It was early when she caught on that Joshua was her mothers minion. But it wasn’t until her grandfathers death did she suspect there was more to their relationship than both of them were letting on. Margrette was a calculative person and there were a vast range of things her mother could be trying to get her hands on. Four years ago, after returning from running away Margrette explained to Adela that Joshua was a friend to her family and he and Adela were to be arranged for marriage. Both Joshua and Margrette come from an ancient lineage of hunters. Their separate families were founders of the Hunters Association. With Adela being a witch, she couldn’t understand why her mother, Margrette, would arrange her to marry a hunter. None of it made any sense. Especially since the HighCourt and the Hunters Association are still at odds with one another. Adela’s grandfather was the Elder of the HighCourt but it was her father that changed the old man’s thinking of humans that given up their status within the Hunters Association. The entire purpose of the HighCourt is the give Supernaturals a fighting chance to become a part of society. Those of the HighCourt want humans to stay out of power, thus the HighCourt was formed, but it wasn’t until the Nelson family came into power did they begin to build the bridge for humans and Supernaturals to come together. More so it was Ash Nelson, who is Adela’s late father, who helped change Elder Nelson’s perspective. There will never be another Duo like her father and grandfather. She missed both of them dearly. Arriving at the funeral event, Adela and her group make their way to the front. Witches are different with how they deal with the deaths of the Elder’s of the HighCourt. Their physical bodies are burned so their spirit can be released. The only good thing for Adela is that she will get to see the Phoenix rise into the sky. Then his ashes will return to the family crypt.    Unbeknownst to Adela though, there were two people watching her every move from the back end of the event. She was so consumed of trying to get through the day, that she didn’t feel the presence of the man she loved. Elliot on the other hand spotted her rather quickly. He felt uneasy at how much unhappiness showed in Adela’s face. He knew he caused some of it. Recalling how he impulsively left her in New Mexico by herself made him feel sick. Them running away together four years ago felt like the best thing that could happen to him. Elliot loved Adela since they were kids and would fantasize about them spending their lives together. Her deciding to return home after they just ran away, hurt him but it wasn’t until a couple years ago that he realized he never actually listened to her explain why she was returning. The moment Adela’s face changed when she picked up her phone was enough for him to shut everything out and leave. When Elliot first left for California he would get numerous emails a day from her which he would pray to Gaia that she would stop trying to reach out. Then one day they just stopped. It was like she dropped from the face of the earth actually. Elliot tried looking up her social media and he tried reaching out via phone calls and letters. Everything just went unanswered. He got so worried he reached out too Brandon, that’s when he was told about Elder Victors funeral. He just knew they were going through a rough time. Elder Victor saved him many times and needed to pay his respects, but he was mainly there to see Adela. Looking at her right now, the bruises on her body doesn’t go unnoticed to him. As Adela turned to her mother, Elliot could see the cut on her lip on the left side of her face. His saliva turned sour. Turning to his friend Hugo, who also was watching Adela and Brandon closely looked as if he wanted to punch something. “We have to help” is all Elliot could muster through gritted teeth. Both men turning their attention to the man who began speaking but neither of them knew who he was. “Thank you all for showing up to Elder Victors event. He was a respectable man. Accomplished many things during his time, but I feel his regrets may lay with leaving my Fiancée Adela and her Brother. Even with that, I know he is always watching out for you two” Joshua pauses before continuing to speak. Only glancing at Elliot for a moment. “Today is not a day to mourn his death, but to celebrate his life. He is free now and able to return to is wife’s and his son’s side” Joshua continued to drone on but Adela had long tuned him out. She had mastered it within four years. She mastered the glazed over look that made people believe she turned passive, when it actuality she was plotting. During Joshua’s speech, she began running through her plan, making mental checks of the things that were completed and in place. ‘Finally’ she thought to herself. The event had come to its mark where her grandfathers spirit was to be released. Joshua and Hugo continued to watch Adela and Brandon, but neither of them cried. Margrette on the other hand, was overdoing it with her theatrics. Elliot wanted the chance to at least to speak to Adela a little but her and her family were already in the car once the event was over. He would just have to go to the wake because his determination wasn’t going to allow him to give up.      As Elliot ran through the labyrinth of a house he’d never been in, he grew increasingly frustrated with not being able to find Adela. Not watching where he was going he bumped right into Savannah. “Ellie!” She shrieked in his ear making him wince “Hi Savannah, and call me Elliot please.” He tried to bypass her but she just continued to block his path. “Ellie, come sit with me and catch up! I’ve missed you. Adela said that she heard you went to California” his patience was wearing thin, but was shocked at the extent Adela knew of his whereabouts. He was too chickenshit to know what her life was like after four years and he absolutely hated hearing the sentence ‘My fiancée Adela’ said by another man, but that’s why Elliot needed to find her. “Let’s have a drink and you can tell me all that’s happened in the past four years!” Savannah shoved a beer in his hand. “Okay, I went to California and got a sales job” he says before taking a swig out of the can. Sitting down next to Savannah, he began wondering why the beer tasted better than any he’s ever had. He began to drink more out of the can while tuning out Savannah’s droning. Finishing his drink he started to turn to tell Savannah he was leaving, but finally facing her she started to glow and he forgot what he was going to say just as he was about to open his mouth he felt himself blacking out and drifting off to sleep.
