Arthur:
On the first day of my arrival in that small town, I was quite eager to see how that damned woman was doing. What sort of inane things had she done to have caused someone to want to take her life so badly?
However, my own pride and self-respect would not allow me to do such a thing.
What was more, the main reason I was here was so that I could meet my fiancée, not to see that stupid woman.
Undeniably, Diana was a wonderful woman who fit my every requirement for a future mate. Not to mention that the power behind her family was also going to help me greatly in maintaining my position as Wolf King. However, even when I stood before the very wife I chose, my future Luna, I did not feel as joyful as I expected to. Instead, I felt strangely irritated.
That was because an involuntary sense of resistance would arise in me whenever she approached me. Even when she kissed me, I did not feel pleased or aroused in any way.
Damn it... What was wrong with me?
Even though she was the perfect match for me, why was it that I could not feel anything for her?
Andrew could tell how bothered I was. He tried to console me by saying that it took time for a relationship to grow. It was our first meeting, after all. We would surely become a loving couple to the envy of everyone once we had time to get to know each other better.
I nodded in agreement but I did not feel so sure about his words.
Perhaps, I was naturally fickle. 28 years I lived with countless women coming and going by my side, yet none of them made my heart "flutter" as some people described it.
All of a sudden, my parents came to mind.
Everyone thought that they were the perfect loving couple.
My mother had a sickly body and she spent more than half her life confined to her bed, but not only had my father not abandoned her, he happily took care of her.
When I was 5, my mother's frail body could hold on no longer, and she departed this world.
My father was a respectable man, as well as a powerful Alpha. It was not long after Mother's death that he remarried a beautiful Omega.
The amount of care that my father paid me was pitifully small. When my mother was still alive, most of his time was spent taking care of her, and after remarrying, his time went to his new wife instead.
Even though I was his only child, I may as well not even exist in his life, since it would make no difference regardless.
Mother was the only person who cared for me when she was alive. Once she was gone, I had become alone with nobody to show concern for me.
My beautiful stepmother was constantly thinking about having her own child. Even though her treatment of me was not poor, it was difficult to say that she cared about me.
Generally, Omegas were known to be considerably fertile, yet it was as if God knew how quickly my father moved on from the loss of his mate, and as if to punish his disloyalty, it was not until I was 12 that my stepmother finally bore his child.
Father was overjoyed, my stepmother even more so. With their excitement to welcome a new life to the world, I was even more overlooked by them.
Regardless, I no longer cared then. My need for affection died and was buried alongside my mother with her parting.
From then on, I stopped believing in love.
Father cared so much for Mother back then. Could anyone dare to question their love then? Yet, what happened? Mother was forgotten as soon as she died. He quickly remarried and reinvested himself in another relationship.
Hah. I did not long for a love like that.
Soon after my stepmother's pregnancy, my father went to war. As the strongest Alpha of his division, it was impossible for him to avoid joining the frontlines.
It was not long before we received news of my father's death, and as soon as his wife, whom he had vowed to love for a lifetime, learned that he was gone, anything of value was wrapped up at once and she escaped from the household. Even the baby they were looking forward to raising was brought to a doctor and aborted.
Tsk tsk, if love was so cheap, then for what reason would I believe in it?
Without my parents to care for me or even a place to stay, I roamed the streets for a time, living a miserable life where I often went hungry with barely enough food to keep myself alive.
I experienced a lot in those days. I had been cheated, hurt, and humiliated, but it allowed me to see what the deep dark underbelly of society was like. I got to see the world as it truly was.
A few years later, through effort and tenacity, I finally shaped myself into an Alpha who surpassed my father.
I knew I had changed a lot. I no longer trusted anyone. I became paranoid and hardheaded, but so what? The price did not matter as long as I could improve my life.
One can be physically weak, but one's heart must not be so. Love, trust… all of that would only serve to become a knife in another's hands, used as a reason to hurt you.
Money and power were the only things that would not betray me, so I gave myself a target–I wanted to climb to the apex. I wanted to become the Wolf King.
With God's blessing, I managed to achieve my goal.
Yet, little did I know, becoming a Wolf King was only the start of it.
Werewolves have always revered the strong. If I were not strong enough, then I would one day be replaced. There were countless eyes watching me at every moment, just waiting for the opportunity to take my place.
I was still young so I could easily dominate in strength, but I will grow old eventually, and our tribes were not at peace. Conflict arises constantly, so no matter how strong I was, being injured was still a very real risk that I had to watch out for.
Therefore, in order to keep my position, I needed to build up my own forces.
Andrew was strong and loyal, but relying on him alone was far from enough. I needed more people to rely on, to help me.
Yes, I could draw people in with my money and power, but as long as someone could offer more than I could, then those people would betray me at the first opportunity.
To avoid that, I decided on a political marriage. I had to marry a woman from a family strong enough to become my shield and to forcefully bind them to my side through their daughter.
Yet, I seemed to have overlooked the fact that I could have no interest in my fiancée whatsoever. Not the slightest reaction, not romantically, and not even sexually.
Perhaps I should find a suitable moment to make a move on her. After all, what husband would I be if I could not even sleep with my own wife?
