Smoke still drifted across Dragonsreach. The wyvern's body lay where it had fallen in the shattered town square, already surrounded by a wide berth that no one dared cross. Fires continued to burn throughout the town, though many had been beaten back or redirected by Alice's magic. The screams had faded. Now… There was only grief.
Wolf stepped over collapsed timber as she and Azymondius made their way toward the edge of town. The dragonborn had returned to his humanoid form, one shoulder sporting fresh claw marks and soot streaking the scales along his face. "You know," he muttered, rubbing his neck, "I still say I had it." Wolf didn't even look at him. "You were thrown through three buildings." "...Two." "Three." "...The third one barely counts." "It collapsed." "Exactly." Wolf sighed. Alice would probably laugh. She didn't have the energy. Each step reminded her just how much magic she'd poured into the battle. The weight settled deep in her muscles, hidden beneath calm expression and practiced posture. Nobody else needed to know. Not yet.
Task Force 141 stood near a hastily assembled camp beyond the town walls. Blankets covered the wounded. Merchants had overturned surviving wagons into makeshift shelters. Healers moved constantly between patients while volunteers carried buckets of water back and forth from the river. Price spotted Wolf approaching first. "How is everyone?" Her voice sounded quieter than before. Not weak. Simply... tired. Price looked back toward the camp. "We got everyone we could." A pause. "But..." His eyes drifted toward a row of covered bodies. "...there were casualties." Wolf followed his gaze. Children cried into their mothers' shoulders. A woman wrapped bloodied bandages around her husband's arm. An elderly man silently sifted through the handful of possessions he'd managed to salvage from the ruins. Another family simply… Sat together. Staring at what had once been their home. Wolf remained still. The cost… Her golden eyes lingered on each face. This is always the cost. For just a moment...
The camp disappeared. Different faces. Different fires. Different centuries. The same grief. The same loss. The same impossible question.
"Why us?"
She had seen it more times than she cared to remember. Alice's voice gently pulled her back. "We found the mayor." Wolf blinked. "He claimed he knew nothing about the wyvern." Her expression hardened. "Where is he?" Alice hesitated. "...Come with me." Without another word, the two women walked deeper into the camp. Price watched them leave. Ghost stepped beside him, his voice barely above a whisper. "You see that?" Price kept his eyes on Wolf. "...The way she looked at them." Ghost nodded. "Like she'd seen this before." Price slowly folded his arms. "I don't think this is the first town she's watched burn." Ghost remained silent. Neither of them believed it would be the last.
Alice stopped outside a modest canvas tent. She looked toward Wolf. "He's inside." Wolf stepped forward. "Come out." The layered echo had returned to her voice. It carried effortlessly through the camp. Firm. Unyielding. Alice rested a hand lightly against her shoulder. "Wolf." A quiet reminder. Not a reprimand. Wolf exhaled slowly. Her voice returned to normal. "...His choices destroyed this town." Alice met her gaze. "They may not have been his." Silence. Then the tent flap moved. "I'm here." The voice was small. A boy stepped into the afternoon light. He couldn't have been older than twelve. His clothes were stained with ash. One sleeve had been torn nearly to the shoulder. Despite the soot covering his face...
He stood as straight as he could. Wolf's eyes widened ever so slightly. "...You're the mayor?" The boy swallowed. "My father was." He looked toward the ruined town. "He..." His voice faltered. "...didn't make it." He straightened again. "So now..." His small hands clenched into fists. "...it's my responsibility." For a long moment… Wolf simply looked at him. A child. Trying to carry the weight of an entire town. Something inside her tightened. "You are still a child." Her voice softened in a way neither Alice nor Price had yet heard. "You will not answer for your father's mistakes." "But I have to!" The words burst from him. "If Father hadn't—" His voice broke. "It's because of him that..."
Wolf crossed the distance between them. She lowered herself onto one knee. Then gently wrapped both arms around him. The boy froze. Only for a second. Then everything holding him together shattered. He buried his face against her shoulder and sobbed. Great shaking breaths. Months of fear. Hours of terror. The grief of losing both his father… And the town he had called home. Wolf said nothing. She simply held him. One hand rested against the back of his head. Patient. Steady. Alice smiled faintly. She'd seen that side of Wolf countless times. Very few others ever did. Eventually, the boy pulled back just enough to wipe at his eyes. "There..." He sniffled. "There was another team." Wolf frowned. "What team?" "We called for Team Lazarus..." He took another shaky breath. "...and the Griffin Riders." Alice's expression shifted. "They came?" The boy nodded. "Lazarus was already here when..." His eyes drifted toward the smoking ruins. "...everything went wrong." Wolf slowly looked toward Alice. Realization settled between them. "...Seth." Alice nodded. "He must've been the one who contacted us." "The pendant." Wolf looked back toward the ruined streets. "Lazarus was already fighting." "And still needed reinforcements." That told her everything she needed to know about the wyvern.
Wolf stood. The boy instinctively reached for her. One small hand wrapped around the side of her leg. She didn't move away. Instead… She rested a hand gently atop his head. "Are you alone now?" The question was quiet. Careful. The boy shook his head. "No." He pointed toward a cluster of healers tending the wounded. "My mother..." A faint smile appeared despite the tears. "...She's helping everyone." Wolf followed his finger. A woman worked tirelessly between the injured, exhaustion written across every movement, yet she never stopped. Wolf nodded once. "Good." The boy looked up at her. "What happens now?" Wolf was silent for several moments. She looked across the camp. At the wounded. At the families. At the homes reduced to ash. Wolf looked down at the child for another moment before straightening. "We need to find Team Lazarus." Her attention shifted to Alice. The boy tugged gently on Wolf's sleeve. "The Griffin Riders never got here." Wolf looked back at him. Her mind immediately began fitting the pieces together. "They must've been too far away," she murmured. Alice nodded thoughtfully. "Where were they when everything happened?" The boy pointed toward the forest beyond the ruined town. "I can show you." He reached up, grabbing one of Alice's hands before reaching for Wolf's with the other. "Come on." Alice smiled warmly. Wolf simply allowed herself to be led.
The small group crossed back through the camp. Survivors stepped aside as they passed, offering quiet thanks or weary nods to Wolf and Alice. Task Force 141 looked up as they approached. Price immediately noticed the determination that had returned to Wolf's posture. "We've got another team still unaccounted for," she said without preamble. König's attention shifted toward the child. He lowered himself into a crouch, his towering frame making him seem even larger beside the boy. "And who might you be?" The boy looked up at him with wide eyes, curiosity outweighing any fear. "My name's Flynn." A small smile reached König's eyes beneath his hood. "It's good to meet you, Flynn." He offered a gloved hand. After only a brief hesitation, Flynn shook it. Soap leaned toward Gaz. "I think he's found his favorite already." König either didn't hear him...
Or chose not to acknowledge it. Wolf watched the exchange for only a heartbeat before turning back to the group. "Flynn told us Team Lazarus answered the town's call before we arrived." Alice nodded. "We believe they're the ones who sent the emergency message." "If they're still out there," Price said quietly, "they may need help." Wolf met his gaze. "Or recovering." The single word settled heavily over the group. "We'll start with their last known location." She rested a hand lightly against Flynn's shoulder. "He'll lead us there." No one objected. A powerful rush of wind swept across the camp.
WHUMP.
WHUMP.
The unmistakable beat of enormous wings echoed overhead. Flynn jumped. Without thinking, he darted behind Wolf, clutching the back of her cloak. Wolf's posture changed instantly. Every muscle tightened. Her head snapped toward the sky. One hand drifted instinctively toward the shadows gathering around her feet. Then...
Recognition. She relaxed. "Easy." Her voice remained calm. "It's the Griffin Riders." Flynn cautiously peeked around her. High above, six enormous griffins soared over the camp in perfect formation. Sunlight glinted from polished armor covering both riders and beasts alike as they banked gracefully over Dragonsreach, circling the ruined city before beginning their descent. Every conversation in the camp fell silent as heads turned skyward. Even after everything that had happened… The sight was enough to make people stop and watch.
The lead griffin broke formation. Powerful wings beat against the air as the beast descended toward the camp, scattering ash and dust before landing a short distance away. The remaining five riders continued circling overhead. The rider stayed in the saddle. A tired smile crossed his face. "Good to see you're still in one piece." Wolf folded her arms. "You're late." He chuckled. "We were in Crestwood." He patted the griffin's neck. "We pushed them as hard as they'd allow." Wolf's expression didn't change. "David." The single word was enough. His smile disappeared. "What happened?" "Lazarus answered the call." Wolf looked toward the ruined city. "They haven't reported." David's eyes narrowed. "...Seth still hasn't shown himself?" "No." "We're about to search." For several moments he studied the smoking rooftops. Then nodded. "My riders and I will search from the air." He glanced upward. "We'll cover more ground that way." "If you find them..." Wolf met his eyes. "Signal immediately." "You have my word." With a sharp tug on the reins, the griffin crouched before launching skyward. Within moments, all six Griffin Riders split apart, each sweeping over a different section of Dragonsreach. Wolf watched until they disappeared beyond the rooftops.
Then she turned toward Price. "I need you and your team to stay here." Price nodded. "We'll continue pulling survivors from the rubble." Wolf's gaze shifted to Azymondius. "You." The dragonborn straightened. "Stay." He sighed dramatically. "I was hoping you'd forgotten about me." "I hadn't." He placed a hand over his chest. "You wound me." "I am useful." "Then be useful." Wolf's tone never changed. "Help them." Azymondius looked toward the camp. Wounded civilians. Collapsed buildings. Exhausted healers. The joking expression faded. "...Understood." Wolf gave a single nod. She turned toward Flynn. "Lead the way." The boy looked up at Alice and Wolf before quietly starting back toward the ruined streets. Alice fell into step beside him. Without another word… The three of them disappeared into the smoke-filled city.
The three walked in silence. Flynn led the way through streets that barely resembled the town they'd ridden into only an hour before. Collapsed homes leaned against one another like broken dominoes. Stone walls still radiated heat. Ash drifted lazily through the air, settling over shattered rooftops and blackened timber like filthy snow. Every step crunched. Burned glass. Charcoal. Fragments of lives that had existed only hours before. No one spoke. There wasn't anything to say. Alice searched the right side of the street, eyes scanning every collapsed doorway, every pile of rubble. Wolf mirrored her on the opposite side. Always watching. Always listening. Flynn kept his eyes forward. He refused to look at what remained of his home. Alice slowed. Something in the rubble caught her attention. Two figures. Curled around one another. Blackened beyond recognition. One body had wrapped itself over the other before the roof had collapsed. "...A mother..." Her voice barely escaped her lips. "She..." The words died there. Wolf stepped beside her. Without speaking, she rested one gloved hand gently against Alice's shoulder. Steady. Grounding. Alice closed her eyes for only a heartbeat before taking another breath. Then...
"Over here!" Flynn's voice echoed down the street. Both women turned immediately. The boy stood beside the remains of what had once been Dragonsreach's town hall. Only part of its front wall still stood. Everything else had collapsed inward. "They were here." His voice was quieter now. "This is where Team Lazarus was fighting." The three stood in silence. Studying the ruins. Nothing moved. Nothing... Then—
A faint cough echoed from somewhere inside the smoke. Alice's head snapped up. A figure stumbled out from the haze. One arm hung limply at its side. Its clothes were torn. Covered in soot. It limped forward unsteadily. "...Alice..." The voice was weak. Barely audible. Alice's breath caught. "...Seth?" She took one step. Wolf didn't. Every instinct she possessed screamed. Wrong. The gait. The breathing. The smell. Nothing matched. "Stop." Wolf's hand shot out, catching Alice's wrist before she could take another step. She pulled her back hard. "What—" The figure smiled. Then...
It collapsed inward. Its body folded into itself as though every bone had suddenly vanished. Shadow erupted. The explosion hurled ash, dirt, and broken stone through the street. Wolf was already moving. Shadows surged around her. A barrier snapped into existence just as the blast reached them. The force rolled harmlessly around its curved surface. When the dust settled… Something stood where the man had been. Its shape shifted constantly. One moment tall. The next hunched. Arms stretched too long. Then shortened again. Its outline refused to settle into anything natural. Like reality itself couldn't decide what it was looking at. A wet laugh escaped it. "Well..." Its voice sounded like several broken throats speaking together. "...Two for one." Its head twisted unnaturally. "...What a treat."
The creature stepped forward. Darkness pooled around its feet. Each movement caused its body to ripple as though it were only pretending to be solid. Wolf dismissed the barrier. "Alice." She never looked away from the creature. "Take Flynn." Alice hesitated. "What about—" "Go." There wasn't fear in Wolf's voice. Only certainty. "This thing isn't after him." A pause. "It's after me." Alice looked between Wolf… The creature… Then Flynn, whose hands trembled as he clung tightly to her robes. She understood. Scooping him into her arms, she backed away. "Come back." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Safe." Wolf gave the smallest nod. "I intend to." The moment Alice disappeared around the corner— The creature laughed again. "Aww..." It tilted its head almost playfully. "How touching." "You really think..." Its grin widened impossibly far. "...you can stop me alone?" Wolf stood motionless. The shadows around her feet spread silently across the broken street. When she spoke… Her voice carried that ancient layered resonance once more. "You stand before Calamity." The title rolled through the ruined town like distant thunder. Power saturated every word. The creature staggered. Not from force. Recognition. For the first time… Its smile faltered. Then… Slowly… It straightened. "...I remember you." Its voice had changed. Less playful. More cautious. One misshapen hand rose, pointing toward Wolf. "You..." A pause. "...Once made humanity tremble." Its grin returned. Crueler now. "And now..." It looked toward the direction Alice had fled. "...you protect them." Another jagged laugh escaped its twisted throat. "Oh..." It leaned forward. "...how far you've fallen." Wolf didn't answer. She simply watched. Waiting. Measuring. For the first move. The creature smiled. Then vanished. Not into shadow. Into nothing. Wolf disappeared at the same instant. The street exploded.
BOOM!
Cobblestone burst upward as two impacts met in the center of the road. The creature's claws scraped harmlessly across a wall of shadow Wolf had formed between them. She twisted. One hand swept upward. A ribbon of darkness became a blade. It carved across the creature's chest. Black ichor sprayed across broken stone. The monster hissed. "...Still fast." Wolf answered with another strike. It ducked. A tendril erupted from beneath the street. It wrapped around one ankle. Before the creature could react— Wolf yanked. The thing slammed face-first into the ground hard enough to crater the cobblestones. She was already above it. Her boot struck its spine. Another shadow blade descended. The creature barely rolled away. The blade cleaved through what remained of a nearby chimney instead. Stone rained into the street. It laughed. "You've become predictable." Wolf said nothing. She attacked again. And again. Each movement flowed into the next. Every missed strike became another attack. Every dodge placed her exactly where she wanted to be. The creature retaliated. A spear of black energy shot toward her chest. Wolf dissolved. The attack passed harmlessly through drifting shadow before she reformed behind it. Her elbow slammed into the back of its neck. It staggered. She grabbed its arm. Twisted. Bone snapped. The creature screamed. Only for the limb to bend back into place moments later. "...Annoying." It grinned. "You remembered." Wolf's golden eyes narrowed. "Regeneration." She drove both hands into the ground. The entire street answered. Shadows burst upward like spears. Dozens. Hundreds. The creature danced between them with impossible flexibility. One spike caught its shoulder. Another pierced its thigh. A third tore clean through its abdomen. Still...
It kept laughing. "You've gotten weaker." Wolf appeared directly in front of it. "No." Her fist connected. The sound echoed through the ruined town. The creature flew through the wall of a burning bakery. Wolf was already inside before the dust settled. The fight became a blur. Punches. Kicks. Shadow. Stone. Every collision shattered another section of the already ruined building. Neither fighter gave ground for more than a heartbeat. The creature managed one lucky s***h. Its claws scraped across Wolf's side. The cut was shallow. She answered by driving a shadow spear through its shoulder. Pinning it against a support beam. The creature looked down. Then laughed. "...That's all?" Wolf walked forward. Calm. Measured. Every step echoed. "You talk too much." The shadows around her feet climbed her arms. They condensed into a single blade. Long. Thin. Almost invisible. The creature finally stopped smiling. "You..." For the first time… It stepped backward. "You actually intend to—" Wolf vanished. The blade flashed once. The creature's right arm hit the floor. A heartbeat later… Its left. It screamed. Wolf was relentless. Another s***h. One leg gave way. Another. The creature crashed into the rubble, now little more than a writhing torso. It stared upward. Not laughing anymore. "You've..." It coughed. "...always been..." Wolf stood over it. The shadow blade rested against its throat. "...Mercy." The creature actually smiled. "I knew..." It whispered. "...you still had it." Wolf didn't answer. The blade began to press forward. Then—
"WOLF!" Azymondius' roar split the air. Wolf's head snapped upward. A massive section of the already unstable town hall had begun collapsing. The creature's explosion earlier had shattered its supports. The remaining structure was finally giving way. It wasn't falling toward Wolf. It was falling toward Alice. Flynn. And Azymondius. Who had just reached them. Without thinking— Wolf turned. Her hand shot outward. Shadows erupted beneath the collapsing stone. Trying to hold it. For one heartbeat… She looked away. That was all the creature needed. Its severed limbs exploded into black mist. They reformed instantly. Not fully healed. Just enough. One claw drove straight toward Wolf's back. Azymondius saw it. "No!" He moved before he thought. His dragon form erupted into existence mid-charge. He slammed between them. The claw meant for Wolf buried itself deep into his shoulder instead. The impact spun the dragon sideways. He crashed through three ruined buildings before skidding to a stop beneath a cloud of ash. Wolf's eyes widened. "...Zym." The distraction cost her. The creature laughed again. Blood poured freely from the wounds Wolf had inflicted. One arm hung uselessly. Half its face had been carved away. Yet it was still smiling. "You hesitated." Its body dissolved into living darkness. "You've changed." The voice echoed from every direction. "And that..." The laughter faded into the smoke. "...will kill you someday." Silence returned. Wolf didn't chase it. She was already beside Azymondius. The dragon groaned. "...I had him." Even now. Wolf almost laughed. Almost. Instead she knelt beside him. "...Idiot." Azymondius winced. "...You say that..." He coughed. "...like it's new." Wolf placed one hand over the deep wound in his shoulder. Shadows gathered around her fingers. Already… She could feel how little strength remained. Not enough. Not after today. Still… She tried.
