I swallowed this thick lump that had formed in my throat. "U-um, I just went to class and came back here to get a head start on my paper that's due Wednesday," I stuttered out before my tone became more convincing towards the end. Lying to him left a bad taste in my mouth, but I soothed it by promising myself the surprise would be worth it and I could tell him the truth when everything was said and done.
