19. Honesty Is The Best Medicine

1208 Words
NICHOLAS I stare at my sister, who is pouring the delicious red substance into a cup. When was the last time I drank this? "Here, drink it before it goes bad. I won't bring you any more if this spoils." "Okay…" Then, I down it in one gulp, my eyes turning slightly red as I savor the taste, and I do feel my energy return. However, when I finish, I feel listless. This drink doesn't taste as good as it used to because I'm still haunted by her blood scent. ‘Why in the hell did I think about her stupid blood? I didn't need her. All blood tastes the same….’ "Who is she to you?" "Huh?" I see Trixie staring at me sharply. Although I know exactly who she means, I'm still going to brush it off. "Oh, her?" I shrug, looking at the door she ran through to escape with a nonchalant expression. "Nobody. Just a classmate and nothing more." "You know I have high standards, and she definitely doesn't fit in. She's human too." "Oh…" Then, Trixie returns to cleaning the blood bottle. I remain silent, hoping that she will let me off the hook without any questions. But I know she definitely won't because she's my sister. "That girl… Why did you protect her?" "If she really is nobody to you, why bother fighting? You've always been a nonchalant person and have seen humans get beaten your whole life." "Why did you help her by risking your life and even beating that dog?" "Well, that’s…" "You even helped her by distracting me when I was questioning her," Trixie stares straight into my eyes. "You've always enjoyed seeing someone in trouble ever since you were born. But now? You helped her get away from me, and the worst part is she's nobody.” “ A nobody, while you didn't even help your own sister when she was chased by a boar." "Well…" I remain silent because I myself have no answer. Why did I do that? Trixie sighs as she sits on my bed. "You know, Nicho. Sometimes your mate can be an unexpected person." "I know you probably say she's not good-looking for you, and you're way more, but if that were true, then pity the ugly people. No ugly person would ever be paired with a handsome one." "But if she's a mate, then why did she reject me?" I blurt out unconsciously. I don't know why I feel curious about it or bother to tell Trixie, but maybe it's because everyone who truly knew me is already dead. "Nate says that if the mate is a real mate, then she should also feel the bond. Why did she reject me? It's obvious she doesn't like me if she—" "Nicho." "Yeah?" I look at Trixie, who is giving me a strange look. Why does she have the look Mom used to have when she was about to explain something? "You know, in case you forgot, that girl is human. So it's normal for something alive to be confusing because they have hearts." "Yes, but that—" "And before you judge her, did you ever think that you yourself might have confused her with your attitude?" "My attitude?" I frown when I hear Trixie's answer. Since when have I confused her? ‘Didn’t I already clearly state what I wanted? That’s why I got rejected, right?’ Trixie sighs as she holds my hand and shakes it. "Just like I said, she's alive; that's why she's confusing. She has a heart, so she can have all sorts of strange thoughts. Maybe she cares too much, that's why she rejected you." "Then, what should I do so she doesn't reject me?" "Well…" Trixie smirks as she looks at me. What's with that smile… "You can start with something small." Trixie adds before I can argue. "Honesty is the best medicine, and sometimes it can be a good starter." "Honesty?" I chuckle, clearly not understanding her. Haven't I always been honest with her? "Yes, honesty," Trixie says before pointing to my head and flicking it. "And by any means, when I say honesty, it's real honesty. Not from your head, but your heart." "Anyway, rather than struggling here… Why don't you go to her now to explain? It's almost the blood moon, you know." "Blood moon?" I look towards the infirmary window, and it's true, the moon is almost full, and it's getting redder every night. Not even humans can see this bloody thing, as it can only be seen by supernaturals or horny creatures like the dogs. "Mhmm, before the dogs claim her, you know," Trixie says just as the dogs howl. "You know, I sniffed her earlier and smelled dog spittle. I think she's also a mate with that dog." "You don't want to lose her to that dog, do you? They get so horny at times like this." "Horny, huh…" I suddenly feel displeased when I hear the word "horny." My memory returns to when that bastard licked and kissed her neck. He's trying to claim what's mine, huh… "Okay… Maybe you're right," I answer briefly, trying to look calm. I stare at the clock and see 9 p.m., meaning I still have time, and she hasn't slept yet. "Then, I'll go to her." "Don't bother waiting for me. Just lock the door and put the snap gun beside you. Don't let any hunters break in." "Alright, lil bro." Then, I get up from the bed and straighten my clothes. I take a puff of my inhaler before leaping through the window, as the stairs are too slow. ‘He just doesn’t realize he loves her more than blood, huh…’ Trixie smiles as she watches him go. "Well, let's just hope that he does the right thing. Unlike me, who failed with my own mate…" Trixie murmurs, chuckling a little before frowning at the empty cup Nicho drank from. "Wait… Isn't this…" ALEXA I stare in disbelief at the sight before me… Nicholas Alexander?! Why is he here now… "Don't get too excited, or else you'll wake that w***e. You don't want to have another drama with the dogs, do you?" Nicholas reminds me of Ashley, and it's true. She starts to shift in her position, clearly disturbed in her sleep. Nicholas extends his hand, and I pause when seeing how he glows under the bright moonlight. ‘So beautiful…’ "Come on, let's go to another place far from here. I want to talk. I promise it won't be long, and if it gets too long, we can go home." "I will bring you back home safe and sound, and I swear I will keep you safe." Then, I don't know what came over me, but I clearly took his hand. I don't know how we got down, as it happened too fast, and I was too focused on his face but one thing that I know is that tonight, I didn't know that this choice of mine… Would bring the biggest impact on my life, and it will be something I will never forget for the rest of my life. ‘How could his bruises heal so quickly?’
