Chapter 1 - Introduction

Zoras POV My name is Zora Anwar, a former Amarok. I'm 19 and I’m a werewolf-witch-hybrid. The only one of its kind. I live among humans with my Nana to hide from all the people who don't like my existence. My destiny is to unite the kingdoms. Not a big task at all, right? - “Sweetheart, can you help me in the store, please?” I heard my Nana call from downstairs. I sigh and close my book, which I'm currently reading. “I’m down in a minute.” I call back. I walked over to my dresser and pulled the contact lens case out. Inside are my blue contact lenses. I hate them. They make my eyes itchy, but without them, everybody would know I’m not human. I already look like a freak with them. You see, my natural hair color is platinum blond, almost white. They’re straight as f*ck and go down to my ass. My natural eye color is purple. Have you ever seen a person with purple eyes? No? Me neither. Hence, the blue contact lenses. “Come on” I mumbled while repeatedly poking my eyeball without success. You would think I would get better at getting them in, with the times I use them, but in reality I still suck at putting them in. “You could always go without them. Your eyes are beautiful”, tells me, my wolf Zena. “Yeah and let the humans realize, they're not the only species?” I asked sarcastically. “You know we can’t draw attention to us, Zena. Just think about the last time they found us.” Zena huffed as a response. She knows I’m right. But what's itching and hurting me, is also itching and hurting her. That's why she hates them too. After I managed to put both lenses in, I made my way out of my room and descended the stairs that lead down to our store. “Zora, come on. Please, I need your help.” My nana yells while I’m entering the store through the open door that is in the back. I see her lifting a heavy box, and she seemed stuck with the box above her head. “I’m already here. Need a hand with that?” I asked her with a smirk on my face, while leaning against the counter where our cash register is. I made no move to help her. Other people would think, poor old lady lifting heavy boxes. But the truth is, she's a goddamn powerful witch that could simply levitate the box to the top shelf. I’m not sure why she's pretending right now. She narrows her eyes at me and says through gritted teeth “Get your ass over here and help. Now.” I also narrow my eyes. What is her problem right now? I slowly walked over towards her and took the box from her. She mouths. “We’re being watched.” She pointes with her eyes to the other side of the street. I carefully looked outside while lifting the box up. She's right. On the other side, I could see two men standing. Dressed from head to toe in black. I smell that they are vampires. s**t! That’s not good. How did I not sense them sooner? When I’m done, Nana says sweetly “Come over here. This one next please.” I followed her behind the counter and bent down with her. She tabs on her ear and then puts her finger on her lips to tell me to not talk. I understand. She means act like a human and don't say something stupid that gives us away, so I nod. I picked the other box up and asked her “Where should I put that one?” “Next to the other one, please.” She stood behind the counter and carefully wrote something down. I did as she asked and lifted the box up on the shelf and then walked back over to her. I smile at her and ask “You have another one, grams?” Grams is a name I would never use, but humans do it all the time. At the same time, I lured down on the piece of paper she was writing on. I cloaked our scent. “Only the small one over there”. She points towards a smaller box at the end of the counter. I carefully take the small paper and crumble it in my hand. I burn it with my magic in my hand, hiding my hand under the counter. I walked towards the box. I pick it up and put it on the same shelf as the other two. Nana smiled at me. “Thank you love. I need you to run to the store for me. Take my purse.” Nana says, and I know exactly what she's saying because she's talking in codes. I need you to run to the store. LEAVE Grab my purse. PACK YOUR STUFF We made sure that we always had an exit strategy when something like that happened. One that doesn't signal our enemies our plan. Usually we flee together, but she told me after the last time, if we will ever be found again, I have to go by myself while she fights the people off. It is too dangerous for us to flee together anymore. When I was a kid nobody would look twice at an old lady and a kid, but now it's more suspicious. How many young adults run around with their grandparents all the time? The last time someone found us I was 16, and we almost got captured or worse, probably killed. We have been found 3 times since my parents' death, when I was 5. The first time we were found was when I was 9, the second time was with 13, then with 16 and now with 19. It's the fourth time. I'm lucky I wasn't found more often. “Which store?” I ask. WHERE TO? “To Marty’s, down the street.” She replies. OUR SAFE HOUSE IN MARIS. “Alright. I will grab your purse from upstairs.” I smiled at her. She smiles at me and says “See you soon.” I see her watery eyes with unshared tears. I give her a thigh smile. I don't want to cry right now. “We will” I said with determination. Even though we both know that's probably not true. “Go now” she mouths to me. I hurried upstairs to my room. Walk into my closet, get my bag and fill it with clothes. I have to hold back my tears. I don't want to cry right now. I have to focus. I get my bath utilities. I also take the photo of me and my parents from my nightstand and also the one of Nana and me and pack it in my bag. I took the last book about witchcraft I had been reading before with me. I also got my purse and my phone. I took one last look around my room. “Time to go,” Zena said to me. She's right, time to go. I create a portal and walk through it.
