Of course she left me with her annoying boyfriend.
Moving the last pieces of cake around my plate, I realized that Warren never loved me. He had claimed so all these times, and I believed him every time.
God, I was so pathetic. To think that he could ever love me, this son of a b***h only used me for his own benefits. I lost my virginity to him for crying out loud!
Men are manipulators, they know their our around the bush. Smooth talkers, always made me laugh and soon enough, they take what they want.
"I can see that you're mad at me," Scott addressed me, looking at me so intensely. "I don't understand. May I know why?"
I rolled my eyes at him. "You're my sister's boyfriend," I responded as if that would explain everything — it did, in a way. "Can you see that whole story, like can actually see how this ends?" I waved my hands in front of me to indicate a picture.
Scott chuckled, familiar dimple digging into his cheek. "Like I said, you worry too much. It's cute. So uhm..." he trailed off, jabbing his thumb behind his shoulder, "there's a coffee café right across the street. Would you like to come with me?"
I stared at him warily. Was he indirectly asking me out on a coffee date? I thought, but I shook that thought out of my head. He was just craving coffee, and he asked me if I'd join him. Nothing too much to look into.
Right?
"Or we could just grab something to eat before we hit the road," he added when I didn't respond, "McDonald's? That's your favorite yeah?"
He opened his mouth to say something else, but I nodded my head, and soon we found ourselves in the cozy coffee café across the street. The fresh coffee beans wafted around the atmosphere, making it feel like home.
I closed my eyes and inhaled, smiling to myself as I held the warm latte between my hands. When I reopened my eyes, Scott was looking at me so deeply I thought my head might explode.
"Can you stop staring?" I hissed, taking a sip of my coffee, "it's rude to stare, or I will gouge your eyes out with a machete."
Scott laughed, and I found it adorable. I shivered. Did I really just admit that I like his laugh? Thunder grumbled above us, and I looked through the window. Black clouds started to form.
"You can make all the threats you want," he replied, leaning forward as he placed his elbows onto the table. "You wouldn't dare and besides, you'll miss me too much."
"Did you come up with that line or did you copy and paste?" I scoffed, not really impressed by his reply.
"Oh, I never copy and paste," he retaliated, never taking his eyes off me. "All this is original. Pure. You'd never understand, squirrel."
Looking around the room, a few people were engulfed into their own conversations. I looked back at him. "Can you not call me that?" I hissed again, "it's not cute, and not suiting. And someone might hear."
His mouth fell open. "Did you just say squirrels aren't cute? What planet are you living on? Squirrel screams cute with their innocent looking eyes!" he exclaimed with wide eyes. "Also, no one knows us here so I'm pretty sure they think we're a couple — that idea is not too bad, actually."
I opened my mouth to say, "can you please just stop talking?"
Scott ignored me as he continued to rant about squirrels. I found it hard to stay mad at him when he was talking about something he loved. I laughed at how he knew all about the animal, and how they survived.
It was really nice to see him talking about something he admired. The way his green eyes sparkled as he explained with dramatic hand gestures.
Checking the time, we should've been on the road. I glanced up to notify him, only to find him staring at me again. "Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked as I took a sip of my latte.
Scott stirred his own content with his spoon. He shrugged. "Oh nothing. Just admiring the view," he responded nonchalantly. "As I've done all along."
I felt my face flush, so I lifted the cup up to my face in attempt to hide my reddened cheeks. I rolled my eyes at him like always. "Well, can you stop staring at the view? We need to leave if we want to make it on time."
He reached into his front pockets to retrieve his wallet. He threw a few dollar bills onto the table as he got up. Following his actions, we exited the coffee café and walked to the car that was parked around the corner.
This was going to be the worst drive of my life that I did not want to be part of. I could feel it in my bones. Scott had his annoying grin on his face that I wanted to punch so bad. He could be sweet one moment, and the next he could be a complete dipshit.
All of a sudden a gust of wind came out of nowhere. I hugged my jacket tighter around my body, but it barely helped. Thunder grumbled again.
When we reached the car, I got into the passenger seat, and he got into the driver side. Once comfortable, I buckled myself up.
Safety first, after all.
I'd never driven with Scott before so this was my first time, and he could tell by my change in behavior. He let out a cute chuckle as he roared the car to life. "I'm not going to kill us so relax. I always give people rides."
"No s**t Sherlock," I replied sarcastically, "we all know how you can't keep it in your pants."
I felt a soft hand on mine, and my head turned to look at him. Scott always seemed to hypnotize me with his eyes. They were so damn green. "Relax," he said to me in a calm voice. "This is going to fun! It's only the two of us, you know, like it should be."
Sighing, I took his hand and placed on the steering wheel. Pointing down the road, I said, "we should get going, and you need to stay focused. Also, don't touch me."
If only he knew how insane his touches made me feel like I was on ecstasy. It was intoxicating to my health. My skin screamed for his, but I refused to let it become something it shouldn't.
Clenching his jaw, he followed my gaze out of the front window. "Right."
Once out of the parking lot, I started to relax because there was truth in his previous words. He was a safe driver so I plugged my earbuds into my ears and tuned out the awful world once again.
Rain suddenly poured down from the sky, and I relaxed watching as the raindrops splattered into the windshield. It brought a sense of calm to my soul.
My peacefulness was disturbed when I felt a jab in my left rib.
Yelping as I took my earbud out. "What?" I asked, glaring daggers at him, "can't you communicate like a normal human being?"
He rolled his eyes at me. "Don't be a smartass," he retaliated with a roll of an eye. "I need you to check in the glove compartment if there's a map," he said without looking at me, leaning forward to squint his eyes to see ahead of us. "Because I have no idea where we are, and I can't see for shit."
I looked ahead, and glanced at him. "It's probably all those turns you took back there," I told him as I jabbed my thumb behind my shoulder. "And can you please just slow down a little?"
"Relax," he said, chuckling, "everything's going to be alright."
My eyes grew wide in shock as my heart leaped into my stomach. I knew this day would come! I knew he wasn't who he said he was.
"You don't know where we are?" I exclaimed in horror, "oh my God, this is k********g! I'm calling the cops. I have my rights so you don't get to make choices for me!"
He remained expressionless, giving me a deadpan look. "Hey calm down, squirrel. It's not as dramatic as you make it," he replied, "I just need you to look at the map. If there is one so we can get the hell out of here."
I still stared at him like I didn't just hear what he said. He added, "like now before we get to the next intersection."
Diverting my gaze from the side of his face, I opened the glove compartment expecting to find something useful like a gun, or a knife. Instead I found a map that was neatly folded so I took it out.
Ignoring my inner voice that told me I was stupid, I inspected the map, and my eyes immediately didn't know where to look. There were so many lines going into different ones. Ponds, lakes, spots, green lands and symbols were scattered across the map.
My brain tried to process what I was looking at. No wonder I failed Geography three times in a row because I had no idea what was going on.
"There's a intersection ahead," he told me impatiently as if that was going to help me figure out where the hell we were. "I need you to find the place."
I rolled my eyes, and tried to find our location as my index finger moved across the map. But I was so lost I didn't know where stop.
"Left or right," he urged me as we started getting closer to the intersection. "I need an answer like now, squirrel."
We were so dead.
I pointed to the left. "Take a left!"
He looked at me before looking back on the road. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, left!"
Scott turned the car to the left, and my gut told me told me otherwise. My doubt had been confirmed when he we drove longer than necessary. Add to the fact that there was more turns than usual.
Wiping the window with my hand, I glanced out to have a look at where we were. The futher he drove, the more trees, and mountains appeared. It looked scary for sure.
He looked around our surroundings. "I think you got us lost," he stated the obvious, "great thinking by the way. How are we going to get back?"
I shot him a deadpan look. "Don't blame this on me. You're the one driving. Besides, we can't even turn around. This is a one-way only."
"You said take a left," he retorted, looking at me. "Let me see the map."
My elbow accidentally rolled down the window, and the strong gust of wind suddenly invaded the car. The map flew into Scott's face causing the car to swerve on the road.
I gasped when my phone fell out of the window from the sudden sharp jerk of the car. I reached out to grab the earphones as I leaned out of the window.
Shit.
"No!" I shouted because my whole life just flashed before my eyes. I hadn't realized that my whole body was now hanging out of the car.
When Scott successfully pried the map out of his face, a strong hand tucked at the end of my shirt as I tried to get back in the car. I screamed from the sudden position. Then, I felt two hands on my hips pulling me back into the car, and once I was back inside, my eyes widened when a saw a huge truck approaching us.
Its loud honk made Scott snap his head into that direction, and grabbed the steering wheel to sharply turn it to the right. The car swerved as I held onto my seatbelt.
This was the second time my life flashed before my eyes.
This time it was literal. I felt at peace for a few seconds before the car hit something causing me to hit my head against the dashboard, and fly back against my seat.
Everything went silent.
I didn't know how long it took me to regain consciousness, but when a soft hand touched my right cheek, I opened my eyes. Everything was blurry, and my ears were stinging. My head felt heavy for my own body.
Was I heaven? Or hell?
When my eyes regained their focus, the car was positioned into a really weird forty degree angle. The first thing I saw was Scott's face which had blood on the side of his face. There was smoke coming out of the hood.
Scott's jaw was clenched, and he was very close to my face. "Zayn wake up," he said lightly tapping my cheek. "We need to get out of here."
It was then that I realized I was hanging from my seatbelt as my head throbbed with pain. Also, my brain tried not to focus on how dangerously attractive Scott looked with dishevelled curls, and blood running down the side of his face.
He unbuckled my seatbelt, and I fell ontop of him. He caught me effortlessly between his arms. His scent was all around the car giving my head a light spin.
I rested my forehead against his chest, and sighed. Thank God we were alive.
"Scott?"
"Yeah?"
"You... are... an... i***t! Oh my God!" I said sitting ontop of him. Bringing my hand back to slap him across his cheek, he caught my hand before impact. "You nearly killed us!"
He grinned at me as he held onto my hands. "I'm sorry! You were going to fall out of the window — I had to save you."
Okay, he had a fair point.
I also realized we were stuck in between two enormous tress so there was no way we could escape. All this just for a wedding dress.
My life was over.
