Chapter Twenty-One I had no words and was thankful when I received a reprieve when two events coincided: 1) Ramirez got called away on cop stuff and 2) Misty’s break was ending and she, too, needed to return to work. After letting Ramirez know I’d touch base with him later, Misty and I swapped numbers and she sent me a picture of Jillian. I gave her one of Leah, just in case. When I thanked her, she surprised me by pulling me in for a quick hug before kissing Nicoh on the top of the head and rushing back to her barista duties, apron in hand. I was glad she hadn’t made me promise to call her with any information, because the next time she received news about her sister, it wouldn’t be good. And it wouldn’t be coming from me.
