CHAPTER SIX: AWAKEN

I returned back to Ray and sat by her side again. I caressed her face taking in her entire features. "I'm sorry babe. I always fail you but I just can't seem to let you go though I know this love is toxic to both of us but I'm addicted to the point that I don't care if I drown because you'd still be my antidote everytime babe. I know I'm being selfish but I just can't help myself". I whispered meekly to her.

"I don't regret falling for you. No matter what they say I'll always want you. You're never a mistake and even if you were I would make that mistake all over again till you become right. Please babe wake up I'm a monster without you. It's like walking in a dark tunnel with no hopes of finding light". I whispered again holding back the tears that threatened to fall from my eyes.

After pouring out my emotions for like an hour, sleep finally took over me.

I don't know how long I slept but I was awoken by a piercing scream. I saw Ray trembling and murmuring some inaudible words. I moved my ears to he lips to hear what she was murmuring but it was no good. She was still trembling so I held her in my arms as she began to whisper, "An-Annie ple- please I'm sor-sorry I failed. I'm a failure, I'm a failure. I should have died too". She subconsciously wrapped her arms around my neck mumbling those words over and over again as I rocked soothingly.

After awhile she stopped trembling and fell into oblivion again. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. I was so scared for a minute there. I wonder who was Annie. "Who is she to you and why are saying you failed her? I whispered to her holding her steadily in my arms. "I promise I'll find whoever Annie is and bring her to you babe". I said watching her sleeping figure.

"Wow D you did a really good job calming her down. For a minute I thought a ghost was out to get me but I mean it's impossible right cause I have a clean record". I heard Jerome's voice after I put Ray back on the bed. "Tell that to the people who are dumb enough to believe you. Now leave Jay, I need sleep", I snapped back. "Hey no need to get aggressive okay, I'm just saying. I mean compared to you I'm a Saint". He replied in an amusing tone. I ignored his comment and reverted my gaze back to Ray. Soon, I heard receding footsteps convincing me that the blabber mouth had finally left.

After awhile sleep took over me once more and I was pulled into a time where Ray and I were so happy. I dwelt in that bliss till morning came.

I woke up and found Ray in the same position I had seen her before sleep overtook me. I decided to go home and take a quick shower. As I descended the stairs I run into Jerome and told him I'll be back soon.

I didn't expect to meet my dad when I got him but boy am I so unlucky. “Where the hell were you all night boy?" My father asked in a bored tone. "That's none of your business dad. Since when did you start caring about where I go?" I snapped back. "I started caring when that wrench entered your life and bewitched you to make you think you love her", my father yelled. "I do love her. More than life it self". I shot back. "Oh please don't make me laugh. You don't even know what love is. Don't try and follow in your dumb mother's footsteps. She believed in love and look where that landed her", He replied. "Shut up! It's your fault she ended up that way. She was very bubbly before she met you and committed the gravest mistake of her life by falling in love with a monster like you". I shouted. "Oh really?" He said amidst laughter. "If I'm a monster don't forget you are my son and you once idolized me following in my footsteps so does that make you a monster too?" He asked in an amused tone. "I'm nothing like you. Now excuse me I don't have time for this". I concluded walking towards the stairs but before I knew it I was pulled back with full force and slammed unto the ground. My dad grabbed me by the neck and said, "Don't ever make that mistake of walking out on me again. Our conversation is not over until I say so. Now you're gonna listen to every s**t I have to say and digest it like a good boy else you're gonna live to regret more of your stupid choices". My father warned. "Why can't you just leave me be? Why? Does it take much from you to see me happy? What the hell did we do to deserve a curse like that? Was it wrong that we wanted to be happy?" I let out.

"Don't try to act innocent. You knew falling in love was forbidden but you still went ahead and disobeyed me. Now deal with the punishments that come with your disobedience. I'll kill her a dozen times over if it means you'll learn your lesson and stay the hell away from that wrench". He yelled back. I shook my head in disagreement. "You know that's not fair dad. Not to me. Not to your own flesh and blood". I said and headed towards the stairs again but this time he did not stop me which I was thankful for. Did I finally break through his thick skull? I thought to myself.

I got to my room and immediately went to take my shower. I have already wasted so much time as it is. In less than fifteen minutes I was already out of the bathroom. A call came through after a few seconds and I picked it up immediately after confirming that caller ID. "D she's awake you gotta come here ASAP. I don't think I can handle her". His voice came through as soon as I answered.

"Okay I'll be there soon". I assured him before ending the call.

I grabbed the first thing I saw in my wardrobe and put it on with great speed. I rushed out of my room towards the house's exit, wishing greatly not to bump into my dad. Which I didn't thankfully.

I reached Jerome's house in no time and ran towards his room. I opened the door and saw Ray with a scared expression and tears rolling down her eyes and the first thing I heard her say was "please don't kill me too". I turned to see that her gaze was directed towards Jerome. "I moved towards him and asked "What did you do?" he just shrugged and reverted his gaze back to her direction. "Maybe she's scared because she saw me kill those men" Jerome spoke after sometime. I snapped my neck to direction and asked in disbelief "You killed the men in front of her? What the hell man? Are you trying to scar my woman for life?". We exchanged words as if Ray was not in the room with us. We continued bickering until Ray's soft voice came through, "please let me go. I promise I won't say a word to anyone about this". I moved to her side and tried to hold her hands but she withdrew her hands like I was a plague. I couldn't hide the hurt I was feeling but I didn't attempt to touch her again. "No one is gonna kill you, you are in safe my hands now trust me on that" I managed to say pulling a smile at the end.
