Episode Ten The first snowfall of the season arrived quietly. By the time students spilled out of their morning lectures, a thin blanket of white covered the campus lawns, the walkways, and the roofs of the residence halls. The university looked almost peaceful. Jael wished her mind felt the same. She tightened the scarf around her neck as she crossed the quad toward the faculty building. Her phone vibrated in her pocket. Chloe: You're thinking about him again, aren't you? Jael rolled her eyes before typing back. Jael: I'm thinking about my assignment. A second later another message appeared. Chloe: Liar. Despite herself, Jael smiled. --- Across campus, the hockey arena was anything but peaceful. The locker room buzzed with nervous energy. Saturday's championship qualifier was the biggest game of the semester, and everyone knew scouts would be watching. Coach Henderson paced in front of the team. "This isn't just another match." He looked around the room. "This game decides who we are." The players nodded. Noah Carter sat quietly in the corner, taping his hockey stick. Usually he would have been the loudest voice in the room. Today he barely spoke. Ethan nudged him. "You planning on joining the living?" Noah smirked faintly. "I'm here." "Barely." Coach noticed. "Carter." Noah looked up. "I need your head in this game." "It will be." "It wasn't yesterday." "It will be tomorrow." Coach held his gaze for another second before nodding. "I hope you're right." --- That afternoon, Jael volunteered to help Professor Williams organize research files after class. Stacks of books covered every desk. Folders threatened to topple over. She carefully arranged the final pile when Professor Williams smiled. "I don't know what I'd do without you." "You'd probably still find everything before anyone else." He laughed. "Perhaps." As Jael stepped out into the hallway, she noticed a familiar figure waiting outside the office. Noah. He wasn't looking at her. He was speaking quietly with Professor Williams. When the professor disappeared into his office, Noah turned. For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. "I wasn't waiting for you." Jael folded her arms. "I didn't think you were." "I came to ask Professor Williams about tutoring." She blinked. "Tutoring?" "I'm behind in one of my courses." That surprised her. "You?" He laughed softly. "I play hockey." "I never claimed to be a genius." For the first time in days... Their conversation felt almost normal. Almost. "I'm glad you're taking it seriously." He nodded. "I'm trying to take a lot of things seriously." The words lingered between them. Jael understood exactly what he meant. She pretended not to. "I should go." This time... Noah didn't stop her. He simply watched her leave. Maybe earning someone's trust began with respecting the moments they weren't ready to give. --- Friday evening arrived with a rush of excitement. Students filled the arena hours before the opening faceoff. Blue and white jerseys covered nearly every seat. The sound of drums and chants echoed through the building. Jael hadn't planned on coming. Chloe had practically dragged her there. "You've never watched one of his games." "I'm here for hockey." "Mmm." "And definitely not because Noah is playing." Jael gave her a look. "You're impossible." "I've been called worse." --- The lights dimmed. One spotlight swept across the ice. The announcer's voice thundered through the arena. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "Your university hockey team!" The crowd erupted. Each player skated onto the ice to deafening cheers. Noah emerged last. Captain's jersey. Focused expression. Confident stride. For a second... His eyes lifted toward the stands. They found Jael. Neither smiled. Neither waved. But something passed between them. A quiet acknowledgement. Then the game began. --- It was fast. Brutal. Every shift felt like a battle. Midway through the second period, one of Noah's teammates lost possession, leaving the opposing team with a clear breakaway. Without hesitation, Noah threw himself across the ice to stop the shot. The puck struck his shoulder with a sickening impact. The crowd gasped. He stayed down. Jael found herself standing before she realized it. Her fingers tightened around the railing. "Is he okay?" Chloe looked at her gently. "You tell me." After several long seconds, Noah pushed himself back to his feet. The arena exploded into applause. Ignoring the pain, he skated back into position. Not for glory. For his team. Jael watched silently. For the first time... She wasn't seeing the boy everyone talked about. She was seeing the man he was trying to become. --- The game ended in victory. Students poured out of the arena laughing and celebrating. Snow had begun falling again. Jael and Chloe walked toward the parking lot. A patch of ice hid beneath the fresh snow. Jael's foot slipped. Before she hit the ground, someone caught her. Strong hands steadied her. "You really need to stop falling around me." She looked up. Noah. He smiled—not the confident grin that made headlines around campus. Just a small, genuine smile. "Thank you." "You're welcome." He stepped back immediately, giving her space. No teasing. No flirting. No expectation. Just respect. "You played well." The compliment surprised both of them. "So you watched?" "I... happened to be there." His eyes softened. "I'm glad." Another silence. Comfortable this time. Until a sleek black luxury car pulled up beside them. The rear window rolled down. Noah's father. His expression remained unreadable. "Carter." Noah's shoulders stiffened. "I'm coming." His father glanced briefly toward Jael. Then back to Noah. "I trust your priorities are in order." The window rolled up. The car idled. Noah looked embarrassed. "I'm sorry." "You don't have to apologize." He hesitated. "I'll see you around, Jael." She nodded. "Goodnight, Noah." He climbed into the waiting car. As it disappeared into the snowy night, Jael remained standing where he had left her. Chloe slipped her hands into her coat pockets. "So..." Jael kept watching the empty road. "So what?" "I think you're starting to see him." Jael didn't answer. Because for the first time... she didn't think Chloe was wrong
