“Aurora Rhapsody Altair Voyage Draco the sixty third.” Her name was spoken in such a monotonous voice… she hated the doctors! She hated needles and blood and everything that is to do with ‘health’! And she despised that name… Why couldn’t she just simply be Rhapsody Aurora Draco as her father called her? Or just plain Aurora Rhapsody Draco? She like the second way round better since Aurora was the name her mother gave her, but her father insisted in that her ‘first’ name should be Rhapsody, after her mother’s name.
She had been dragged here by the guards after she had ‘skipped’ her quarterly check-up again and tried to run away and hide four times in the last three days, but no one can escape when you only have three ships and a station to hide in… and that with a tracker plugged into you – a.k.a. the damned wrist-monitor.
She was dragged by the arm into the doctor’s personal office, few doctor’s had an ‘office’ usually they examined patients in the open, only the operating rooms were ‘private’. But her doctor for the last two years were Councilwoman Olivia… Thus the ‘office’. Her wrists hurt where the cuffs scratched her skin.
She glared at her person guard and then pleadingly looked to her father.
“Sorry cupcake, but this is a must, you know your health isn’t the best.” He kissed her forehead trying to distract her from the syringe drawing her blood. Chris, her dad, had been busy with work, there was an emergency valve that needed repairs, leaving her alone three days ago when she was supposed to go and ‘trusted’ her to… which she didn’t.
“I’m not sick…” She mumbled in protest.
“I know, but we just have to make sure it stays that way, everyone else that was affected by the Star Fire has to go through this Cupcake; you’re not alone on this.” He cooed, calming her, she had a temper on her that only he, who knows how, could prevent from flaring.
“Doctor Olivia, I know you are always gentle, but if you could take extra care?” Her dad would always seem worried that ‘this time’ he’d receive the terrifying news that his baby girl’s body was starting to give in like all the others’…
“There all done.” Doctor Olivia smiled warmly, that was… fast… Aurora glared at the doctor… just because it was ‘over’ without her even feeling it this time didn’t mean she was ‘happy’, because the other reason she hate doctors was how they would ‘interrogate’ her. Ever since Doctor Olivia started taking it on her personally she always wanted to ‘talk’ as though trying to get top secret information out of the fourteen year old.
“You’re almost fifteen, four more months.” The doctor’s smirk mocking her… So what if she still acted like a spoiled four year old?! She had every right to! Her mind screamed at her wanting to make a point, but instead gave a mocking ‘smile’ in return that looked more like she was plotting something…
Her dad left the room after receiving an alert that he was needed back at his work-station and she waved him off, the hard part ‘done’.
“Hmmm…” She ignored the hated doctor’s attempt to ‘make’ her talk, the doctor was part of the Council hence… she hated this doctor even more. The one thing she hated before everything else was officially the Council, but she couldn’t outright say or do anything regarding that unless she wanted to end up in detention… not the everyday ‘school’ type… no it was practically getting arrested by the Guards and depending on the ‘crime’ or ‘offence caused’ one would even receive lashes – a.k.a electric baton…
Thankfully she has been too young till now to be punished that harshly for her past misdeeds, but once she turned fifteen she had to fall in with the rest of the laws and rules and start contributing to the survival of all citizens, even as just a normal ‘worker’ and not a part of the Crew or Council.
Each had their own ‘job’ after completing a series of tests and answering a few ‘interview’ styled questions they would be sorted in areas that would best suit their skills to help maintain the ships and the station. If they get to be chosen as an apprentice they have a higher status than those that are simply thrown into the system to learn their trade they ‘tested’ best in. The master tradesmen were the best of the best in their respected fields, but the most sought after apprenticeship was under a Council-member, or to become part of the crew, instead of the normal labour force.
Not she… she grinned… catching the doctor’s attention. Then she suddenly remembered that she was currently stuck under Darius’ thumb after the last stunt she pulled.
Too many ‘movie’ nights in the recreational sector of the station while she was studying sound waves, one of the few ‘science-y’ experiments she was allowed to do since it only involved a ‘speaker’ and some water, or salt, or small magnets – considered more as ‘toys’ than the big ones she really wanted to get her hands on. A brilliant idea to try and ‘build’ a ‘EMP’ popped into mind…
After she somehow ended up disrupting the compromising the entire mess hall’s systems causing thirteen people to be trapped inside till they could get the door locks to reconnect and unlock itself again… They were only stuck there for like thirteen minutes, but it was enough to finally draw the line… She had run out of ‘chances’ and she was still trying to push them – hence the cuffs the guards refused to remove until they ‘safely’ brought her before Darius after her check-up. The guards were requested to wait outside till Olivia was done with her game of twenty-one questions.
“Have you had any headaches recently?” Doctor Olivia asked.
“I have one right now from being asked stupid questions.” Aurora crossed her arms and avoided looking at the doctor.
“Any nausea, dizziness or ringing in the ears?”
“Your voice is as shrill as a bell!” Aurora commented. This didn’t’ seem to faze Olivia at all as she noted down something on her tablet.
“At least you still got that spark in you! Your wrist monitor recorded a drastic drop in your blood pressure right after an alleviate heart rate two weeks ago and again three days ago? Did you feel anything strange?”
“I think it was right before I heard Dad tell me I had to come here alone causing me to intentionally forgot the time I even forgot to eat breakfast.” Her voice laced with sarcasm.
“Okay that was this for this week but what about two weeks ago?” Aurora was starting to show her frustration from not getting a reaction out of the doctor, usually her ‘doctor’ was the soft-hearted and introverted Misses Rhea, but because of a few ‘bruises I got in a fight with Tristan three years ago, Olivia started checking up on me more often, and later took over the quarterly health-check for me specifically. And now that Darius had her ‘learning’ directly from him Olivia got to ‘talk’ and play ‘therapist’ every time she was to ‘report’ to Darius who then would send her to do tasks, involving going around to the give or fetch something from the other Council-members, mostly from Olivia, Jason and Hendrickson.”
“Too long ago… maybe I’m in the early stages of Alzheimer?”
“Highly unlikely, more like daily noise. People tend to forget the day-to-day stuff since its routine, only recalling specific moments that made a bit more impact on them.”
“You’re boring! Why can’t I just have Doctor Rhea back as my doctor?” Aurora snapped.
“Because she has other patients to tend to that are less troublesome. Now have you felt any sort of pain? Anything, even if it was only for a brief moment, a stinging or prickly feeling, or maybe you felt some numbness somewhere?” Olivia answered and then continued reading from her own checklist of questions.
“Yeah I feel pain right now, a stinging feeling where these cuffs are trying to tear off a layer of skin! A pain in my neck and shoulders from being dragged all the way here and my tung’e fwels a bud ngung…” She smirked as she toyed with her words at the end.
“Alright then, you can leave, or you can stay here and avoid Darius for a few more minutes? I can help make it an hour.”
“No thanks, as much as I hate running errands, I hate talking to you more!” Aurora huffed.
