Serene's peaceful slumber was interrupted by the weight of her shattered heart, and as evening descended, impending darkness troubled her. Waking up to the stark reality of her betrayal, she rose from her bed, unaware of the looming danger that awaited her. Seeking solace and solitude, she longed to escape the madness that had consumed her world.
Leaving her room, she stepped into the night, a gentle breeze whispering through the air as if searching for something elusive. Loneliness failed to provide the solace she sought, prompting her to embark on a short stroll across the nearby field. With each barefoot step, she brushed her fingertips against the petals of delicate flowers that adorned her path.
Engaging in a one-sided conversation with a nearby bird, she uttered her longing for a mate, her voice laced with a hint of resignation. But a sense of unease began to creep over her, as though invisible eyes were fixed upon her. Her heightened senses, honed by her father's teachings, alerted her to an impending threat. Urgency tugged at her, urging her to retreat to the safety of her room.
Liam emerged from the shadows, his intent clear and deadly. He had followed her, biding his time until she reached a secluded stretch of the pathway, shrouded in darkness just before the entrance to the building. Serene turned, her gaze meeting his, defiance flickering within her eyes.
"What is this?" she challenged, her voice betraying a mixture of fear and resolve.
"It will be quick. I owe you that much," Liam retorted.
Realization dawned upon Serene as she understood his sinister purpose. A warning escaped her lips, emphasizing the consequences that awaited him for his actions.
"The Alpha wouldn't approve of this," she cautioned.
"Who do you think gave the order?", he replied.
Liam's gaze remained fixed on her, unyielding in its intensity. Stepping closer, he swiftly covered her mouth, preventing her from crying out for help. Towering over her, his strength far surpassing her own, she struggled in vain, her attempts to break free only resulting in his claws sinking deeper into her delicate skin.
Despite her inability to shift and defend herself in the dire situation, Serene's father's teachings had equipped her with enough knowledge to fight back. Seizing the opportunity, she managed to grip Liam's heel, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground. She was aware that running back to her room or seeking help within the packhouse would only lead to further danger, Serene made a swift decision. If Lucas wanted her dead, then the pack could no longer provide her with safety.
Her heart pounding in her chest, she fled in the opposite direction, darting into the dense underbrush and putting as much distance as possible between herself and the packhouse. Though small in stature, her agility and speed served her well. Liam, attempting to recover, realized he wouldn't be able to catch up to her. He hurriedly raced back to inform Ember of their failed attempt.
Ember's voice lashed out in anger upon learning of Serene's escape. "You let a mere wolf, incapable of shifting, slip through your claws?!" she bellowed, her frustration evident.
"I can still go after her. We just need a few wolves to help track her down," Liam suggested, hoping to rectify his mistake.
"No, it's too late for that now. Sound the alarm," Ember ordered, a sinister plan forming in her mind.
"Serene has just made an attempt on the Alpha's life," she declared, her voice carrying an air of conviction.
Understanding the implications, Liam knew that this fabricated accusation would provide them with a plausible cause should Serene be found dead.
"Shouldn't we inform the Alpha?" he inquired, his gaze fixed on Ember. However, instead of an answer, Ember forcefully pushed him toward the door of her room. "I speak for the Alpha," she declared, leaving no room for further discussion.
The piercing sound of alarms echoed through the night, reaching Serene's ears as she traversed the darkened field. She didn't know the pack had been alerted to her supposed attempt on the Alpha's life. Ember's voice carried across the night, issuing a command that hung heavy in the air.
"Serene has attempted to kill our Alpha due to his rejection. Find her and bring her back, dead or alive," Ember ordered, her words resonating with a mixture of urgency and authority. The wolves hesitated, conflicted by their loyalty to their chosen Alpha and their understanding of Serene's position as his intended mate.
Lucas, appearing from behind Ember, howled with an intensity that silenced their hesitation. "You heard her! Go!" he commanded, his eyes aflame with determination.
As the wolves closed in on her, their howls echoing through the night, Serene's senses heightened, and her heart raced in her chest. The weight of her father's bloodline rested heavily upon her shoulders. Would this be the fateful night that marked the end of her family's legacy?
The sound of the wolf's howls grew closer, sending shivers down her spine. Her inner wolf growled, ready to defend itself and its host. Yet, unlike her wolf, Serene felt fear coursing through her veins. With the faint moonlight casting dim shadows, she struggled to navigate through the darkness, her footsteps uncertain.
Suddenly, she stumbled over a protruding tree branch causing her to fall heavily to the ground. Pain radiated through her leg, and she grimaced, her hopes dwindling. One of the pursuing wolves paused, his ears perked up. "Did you hear that?" he questioned, his voice filled with uncertainty.
The scared wolf, named Marcus, scoffed, and his voice deepened with anger. "Hear what? We must keep moving. Serene has committed the ultimate act of treachery against our new Alpha."
The first wolf glared at Marcus, his voice sharp. "You speak as if she is an ordinary wolf. She is the daughter of our former Alpha."
But another wolf interjected, extracting his claws hesitantly. "Her father is dead. Lucas is the Alpha now. Any form of dissent is considered treachery, Marcus."
A third wolf growled at the bickering pair, his tone authoritative. "Enough! Your argument is irritating and distracting. We must find Serene and bring her to the Alpha alive. Understood?" Marcus and the scarred wolf nodded in compliance.
“Dead or alive, that’s what the Alpha’s mate said, dead or alive”, Marcus corrected.
Suddenly, the third wolf's keen senses picked up a scent. "Blood. I smell blood. This way!" he declared, guiding the trio toward Serene's trail.
Serene struggled to rise to her feet, her injured leg throbbed with pain. She glanced down at her bleeding wound, realizing her disadvantage. Most wolves possessed the ability to transform and heal rapidly, but she had not been blessed by the moon goddess with either of those gifts.
Despite the pain, Serene pushed herself to her feet, determined to fight back. Her wolf paced restlessly within her, sensing the impending danger. But Serene knew the harsh reality of her situation. If the pursuing wolves captured her, it would undoubtedly mean her death.
Meanwhile, Marcus crouched down with his senses on high alert, as he sniffed the air for traces of her blood. "It's her blood, Liam," he confirmed, a determined glint in his eyes.
Liam, the leader of the trio, nodded in understanding. Marcus picked up a bark stained with Serene's blood, inhaling deeply to catch her scent. "She went this way," he concluded.
However, Victor, the scarred wolf, halted their progress, voicing his concerns. Liam turned to him, annoyance etched on his face. "What is it, Victor?"
Victor proposed a possibility, his voice tinged with doubt. "What if this is a ploy to mislead us? Serene might have intentionally left traces of her blood to throw us off her trail and head in the opposite direction."
Considering Victor's words, Marcus tilted his head, contemplating the situation. "Victor may have a point. Perhaps we should split up and cover more ground."
Frustration welled up within Liam, who cut them off abruptly. "Enough! We don't have time for this confusion. We will all go in the direction of her scent." Just then, a tree branch cracked, the sound emanating from the direction of Serene's blood trail.
Marcus took charge, asserting his plan. "We all follow that path. No more discussion. Serene is just one little werewolf. Let's find her and bring her back to Lucas, dead or alive."
Serene cursed under her breath as she stepped on yet another twig, the snapping sound filling the night air. Waves of pain washed over her, and she looked down at her injured leg. The deep cut on her knee bled profusely, leaving behind a clear trail that would lead the wolves straight to her.
Dizziness engulfed her senses as her wolf detected a male presence nearby. Her fading vision caught a glimpse of a figure standing in the shadows. Desperation overwhelmed her, and she reached out, whispering, "Please... help me." With those words, her world faded into darkness.
