Chapter 2

1352 Words
It is now almost 5 years later. I am finishing my senior year of high school. School here is a little different because most don't go on to a traditional college; they just join the pack doing one of many jobs. For me, however, I'll finish this year with my so-called prerequisites done and plan on leaving the pack come fall to go to nursing school. You see, without a wolf, I guess I have more freedom, I can leave and go off to school or travel or really whatever I want and I don't want to stay in the pack. I am sad to leave my family and Millie but I am also excited. Excited to get away from here, to not have to see pity in others eye since I never got my wolf. Who knows if I'll come back here or not. I know I could work in the clinic here but……The clock chimes marking the end of the hour, which pulls me from my thoughts. Class is over for the day. “Students remember finals are next week, so please study this weekend” Miss Johnson says as we exit the room. “That means school is almost over!” Millie excitedly whispers in my ear. I am just thankful that it is the weekend! Millie and I walk home together as we do every day, with her dad being Beta and mine being Gamme. We live very close together. Our houses are about 50 yards from the packhouse and the lake sits almost between my house and it. I guess with our dad being highly ranked, the Alpha wants us close. I give Millie a hug bye, she has to head to the training grounds and I have a date with my sketch book. As I walked inside I was almost trampled by Carter and Caleb as they barreled out of the door. “Sorry sis, we are late!” They have been having to go to training with my dad and help with the training of the other pack members that have just emerged. I chuckled as I walked up the stairs. I walked into my room, flinging myself on the bed. I am so ready to be with my kind of people, humans. I am ready to hear sirens and car honks at night instead of howls and “dog” fights. I am ready to go on a walk and not run into naked people who have just shifted. And I am so so ready to not have to be reminded every second of every day that the Moon Goddess forgot about me! Enough sulking Remi. I got up and headed to my desk. My desk sits facing out toward the lake and the training grounds, which I can see through my oversized window. I like to sit and draw here when I get home. Just sitting there lets me leave my thoughts behind and just get away for a bit. “Dinner” mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Man, I must have been drawing for a couple of hours. I looked down surprised by what I had drawn. It looks like a picture of the story of the Moon Goddess and her true love. I had stretched a large tree by a lake with a man and a large wolf standing together under the moonlight. It was beautiful. The weekend flies by as Millie and I cram as much information as we can into our brains for finals. Millies' favorite subject is Pack history and one that seems to consume our whole Sunday. It's all about the King's War and the prophecy to save us all, blah, blah blah. I guess it is good though. I have been daydreaming a lot in that class lately and I can’t have a bad grade on my transcript in “history”. We somehow made it through Monday and Tuesday without any hiccups. Wednesday morning is the pack history final and I just pray to the Moon Goddess I pass this one…not like she has helped me in the past. As I walk into class and find my seat next to Millie, I realize it is totally quiet. Millie and I look up from our notes and see Alpha James is here. He stands and we all bow our heads in respect. “ May I address the class?” he smiled at Miss Johnson. “ Please, Alpha Jame” she says, returning the smile and gesturing to the front of the class. “Good morning, I wanted to come and invite your class personally to the fair which marks the start of summer. Our Luna and I would like to have a celebration for you as we wrap up the first full class to graduate from this school.” The school building is fairly new for our pack and we are the first to graduate from this building. The school used to be a part of the packhouse, but as the pack grew so did the need to build a separate building. Our Luna was the one who made it happen, so Alpha James wanting to celebrate the school's success makes since. “Luna Lilly has planned for it to be on the training ground this year. There will be food, music, games and a dance. The whole pack will be there to join in the celebration!” The whole class stirred with excitement at that statement . We have never done anything like this before and we sure have never had a dance of any kind. I can see that Millie was beaming with excitement. I, on the other hand, am not. The whole pack will be there, who all treat me differently. Internal eye roll! “Quiet class, quiet down please and let Alpha James finish” Miss Johnson Sh-is “ The fair will be this Saturday at 4 pm. Now that announcement is over, it is time for all of you to pass your pack history exam” Alpha James finished with a whink. “How am I supposed to focus now?” Millie whispers to me. I try to put on a smile that says ya right! How can I get out of this stupid fair? —------------------ “Did Alpha James come to school today?” My mom asked at dinner. “ Yeah”. I glared at her. “Why?” “ Will Remi because I thought we would be more excited about the celebration Luna Lilly is putting on!” She stated firmly. “ It is stupid and I do not want to go.” “ I don't think it is an option, sis. The whole pack is invited and so is the neighboring pack,Red River” Carter, mumbled through a mouth full of food. “What! There are going to be more wolves here. Great!” I blurt out. “Remi! What is going on with you? Alpha James and Luna Lilly are planning this in honor of your class!” Now my mother is scolding me. “And to try and mate people up,” Caleb added through mashed potatoes. “ Are you kidding me? No wolf remember? No mate!” I was fuming. Not only do I have to be around my pack members that feel sorry for me, but now there's going to be another pack there in hopes that members will find their mates. “Honey, you don't know you don't have a mate.” Dad chimes in. “ There have been wolf and human mates before.” The Moon Goddess didn't give me a wolf she sure and hell didn't give me a mate. Plus, if I have a wolf mate I am stuck here! No F-ing way. I shut up, pushing my chair to the floor. “ I am not going”. I sprinted up the stairs to my room. I know I am acting like a little kid but I am so over being here. I just want to make it through the summer without being seen.
