Alpheus and Arethusa A river god, and son of Oceanus and Tethys, Alpheus loved Arethusa, a follower of Artemis. Classical assets are Hesiod’s Theogony (338), Lucian’s Dialogues of the Sea-Gods (three), Ovid’s Metamorphoses (5.572–642), Pausanias’s Description of Greece (five.7.2), and Virgil’s Aeneid (three.694). The Alpheus is a massive river in Elis, flowing from Arcadia and going for walks through the Peloponnesus. According to Ovid, who presents the most targeted deal with- ment, Arethusa turned into a nymph and disciple of Artemis. Returning from the quest sooner or later, Arethusa disrobed and bathed within the waters of the Alpheus.
