They waited for you. Patiently. Relentlessly. Until you were forced to face them. I sat in my office long after everyone else had left. The city glowing beyond the windows. The building quiet. My laptop open. Unread emails scattered across the screen. Work that normally would've held my attention. Tonight, it didn't. Because my mind kept returning to the same conversation. The same message. The same truth. Sometimes not knowing and not wanting to admit it are different things. I'd meant every word. And that was the problem. Because lately... I was running out of ways to pretend.
