Alpha Keaton held the old leather-bound book like a prize. Rare, seventeenth-century, filled with myths about werewolves. The smirk tugging at his lips was enough to send a shiver down anyone’s spine.
“Eat that, Elijah,” he muttered, sliding it onto the shelf.
Poly watched from a few steps away, clutching her files. Even now, with streaks of silver threading his dark hair, Keaton was dangerously handsome. He radiated power, the kind that drew women to him despite the cold steel in his heart.
He turned to her with a glass of bourbon in hand. “What’s going on with Nicole’s tutoring?”
“She’s doing well,” Poly answered, careful, cautious. “But we need a new tutor for defense and archery. Omega Dilon doesn’t push her enough.”
Keaton’s brow arched. “Boredom kills progress. I’ll find someone who taught Kathrine. What else?”
Poly shifted uncomfortably. “Merton… he refuses to finish his studies.”
Keaton’s smirk was cruel. “That boy will never be my heir. Kathrine and her children will inherit what’s mine. You should’ve known that already.”
The chill in his voice made her throat tighten. She nodded quickly. “Of course.”
Her only escape was the next file. “I found out Alpha Satton is hosting an engagement party for his son—on the fifteenth—”
Keaton cut her off, waving an invitation card with a flick of his wrist. “This month. At their North border mansion.”
Poly froze. “They invited you?”
“Elijah is many things,” Keaton said, settling into his armchair, “but he’s not a fool. He wants every Alpha to witness the announcement of his heir.”
Her lips parted. “And you’re not angry?”
“I’m delighted.” His smile was wolfish. He reached out, cupping her face in his calloused hand. His lips brushed hers—soft, almost tender—before deepening into a kiss that stole her breath. Her body melted against him, surrendering to the dangerous heat.
Then his whisper cut through her haze, colder than ice.
“I will snap her neck on the wedding day,” Keaton vowed darkly, eyes glinting with merciless promise. “And I will savor the moment Elijah watches his son’s world shatter.”
