Chloe flinched and stumbled back two steps. "This has nothing to do with me. You're the one who's useless."
The study door swung open. Damien stood in the doorway, still damp from the shower. "What's going on?"
His eyes landed on Seraphina, crumpled on the floor and drenched in blood. His pupils contracted. The color drained from his face. He stumbled down the stairs and gathered her up, the veins standing out in his neck as he shouted, "Get the car. To the hospital. Now!"
Chloe whimpered, "Damien, I'm scared."
He flung her aside, his eyes ice. "Get lost!"
The whole drive there he held Seraphina tightly against him, every gesture full of care, until even she began to wonder, dazed, whether perhaps he still loved her after all.
At the hospital, the doctor saw her, and there was reproach in his voice. "The fetal heartbeat was already weak. How could you be so careless with yourself?"
Damien's hand froze. The worry on his face hardened, then set. He drew his hand back slowly. His tone was restrained, drained of warmth, and there was something thick in his throat, like wadded cotton. "Seraphina, what is it you want this time? A house. A car. Money. Shares?"
"You know how much I wanted this child. And again and again, you use the baby to threaten me. Your heart is cold."
She wanted to tell him it wasn't like that, but the pain in her body made it impossible to speak.
He gave her one long look and walked out.
Tears slid from her eyes. The worst time of all, she'd been kidn*pped and tortured for three full days by one of his lovers. After she escaped, her mother had been hounded by her father, who demanded thirty million in cash. Damien, out of spite, had refused to pay. In the scuffle that followed, Seraphina, already weak, had been shoved hard enough to lose the baby.
But Damien had stubbornly decided that she had aborted his child to punish him for not paying. No matter how she explained, he refused to believe her.
Even though she had known this baby probably could not be saved, now that the moment had come, she was full of regret. Pale and shaking, she clutched the doctor's hand. "Doctor, please... Save my baby!"
The doctor said nothing. Instead, the young nurse beside him pulled down her mask. It was Chloe in disguise.
Her eyes were red and burning with hatred. "You filthy b***h! Pulling the pregnancy card again to fight for his attention. If you hadn't framed me, Damien would never have snapped at me."
A hard, decisive light flashed in her eyes. "If your baby lives, mine becomes a bastard. Brother, this child cannot stay."
Seraphina forced her eyes open, her vision spinning. "What you're doing is illegal," she whispered. "Chloe, you can't do this."
She tried to struggle. There was no strength left in her body.
Even the doctor hesitated. "Chloe, this isn't right. Let it go. I'll find you a better man."
Tears welled in her eyes. "Adrian, I love him. I'll die without him. Just give her an injection. Make her disappear forever, please?"
The doctor was quiet a long moment. Then he stepped outside, took out his phone, and called Damien. "Mr. Hawthorne. Your wife is insisting on a hysterectomy. She says she never wants to carry your child again. Do you give consent?"
Seraphina shook her head. The tears would not stop. Her mouth opened helplessly, but no sound came out.
It wasn't like that.
On the other end, Damien's breath caught. The pain in his voice was at its absolute limit. "Seraphina, do you really hate me that much? Fine. Let's end it for good. I consent."
