Chapter 2 – The Ghost of Almost

1143 Words
Clara barely slept. She replayed every second of the café meeting in her mind the polite smile, the distant tone, the way Ethan’s eyes drifted past her like she was part of the décor. By morning, her chest felt tight with something she refused to name. Insecurity. She hated that word. By the time she stepped into Cole & Harrington Consulting’s glass building, she had carefully reconstructed her composure. Chin lifted. Shoulders back. Neutral expression. If Ethan saw her, he would see the competent project coordinator he’d hired not the woman who had silently unraveled over cappuccino. The lobby hummed with morning energy—heels clicking against marble floors, muted phone calls, espresso machines hissing in the staff café. Clara made her way to the elevator just as it began to close. A hand slipped between the doors. Ethan. Her pulse betrayed her instantly. “Morning,” he said casually as he stepped in beside her. “Morning.” Her voice came out steadier than she expected. They stood in silence as the elevator ascended. Too close. Close enough that she could smell his cologne clean, understated, expensive. Close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his arm. “You left pretty quickly yesterday,” he said. She forced a small shrug. “I had some things to do.” He studied her for a moment. Really studied her this time. “Did I say something wrong?” The question caught her off guard. Not because of the words but because of the tone. There was a faint crease between his brows. Concern? Or obligation? “No,” she said smoothly. “Why would you think that?” “You seemed… distant.” Clara almost laughed at the irony. The elevator doors opened before she could answer, and the interruption felt like mercy. They walked into the open-plan office together, heads turning subtly as they passed. Ethan Cole commanded attention without trying. He didn’t need to raise his voice or demand space. The room simply adjusted to him. Clara adjusted to him too. That was the problem. By mid-morning, she had buried herself in spreadsheets and projections when a familiar name appeared on the internal calendar notification: Sophia Laurent – 11:30 AM – Executive Meeting. The air left her lungs. Sophia. The name Ethan never talked about—but everyone else did. The ex-fiancée. The almost-wife. The woman who had left him two years ago to pursue an international opportunity. The woman who, according to office whispers, had broken the unbreakable Ethan Cole. Clara told herself it didn’t matter. The past was the past. But when 11:28 arrived, she found herself staring at the glass conference room across the floor. And then she saw her. Sophia Laurent didn’t walk into rooms. She arrived. Tall. Effortlessly elegant. Dark hair cascading over one shoulder. A fitted ivory suit that screamed power without saying a word. She moved like she knew she was being watched—and enjoyed it. Ethan stepped out of his office to greet her. Clara couldn’t hear their conversation, but she saw it. The shift in his posture. The way his shoulders straightened. The way his expression changed. It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t obvious. But it was different. Softer. Sophia smiled up at him like she knew something the rest of the world didn’t. Clara’s stomach twisted. She told herself not to look. She told herself to focus. She told herself she was being ridiculous. But when Ethan laughed—actually laughed—at something Sophia said, Clara felt the truth settle heavily in her chest. That was the version of him she had imagined. The easy one. The alive one. The one she never seemed to get. An hour later, Clara was called into the meeting to present financial projections. Her heels felt heavier with every step toward the glass doors. Inside, Sophia’s gaze landed on her instantly. Sharp. Assessing. “Clara Hart,” Ethan said, his tone professional. “Our project coordinator.” Our. The word should have comforted her. It didn’t. Sophia extended a perfectly manicured hand. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” Clara shook it, forcing a polite smile. “I hope it was good.” Sophia’s lips curved slightly. “Of course.” But something in her eyes suggested otherwise. Clara delivered her presentation flawlessly. Clear voice. Confident numbers. Controlled breathing. She didn’t falter once even when she felt Ethan’s attention split between the data on the screen and the woman sitting across from him. When she finished, there was a brief silence. Then Sophia spoke. “Impressive,” she said lightly. “You’ve built quite the team, Ethan.” Built. As if Clara were a piece of infrastructure. As if she were temporary. As if she were replaceable. After the meeting ended, Clara gathered her laptop quickly. “Clara,” Ethan called before she could escape. She turned. “Yes?” “Stay a minute.” Sophia’s gaze lingered between them before she finally exited the room, heels echoing down the hallway. The silence that followed felt different from the café silence. Heavier. “You did great in there,” Ethan said. “Thank you.” He hesitated. “You were watching earlier.” Her heart stuttered. “Watching what?” “Me. Sophia.” Clara held his gaze this time. Refused to look away. “She’s important to the company,” she said carefully. “I assumed she’d be important to you too.” His jaw tightened slightly. “She was,” he corrected. Was. Past tense. But the word didn’t sound convincing. “And now?” Clara asked before she could stop herself. The question hung between them dangerous and vulnerable. Ethan stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Now I’m trying to make different choices.” Her breath caught. Different choices. Was that what she was? A choice? A safer one? Before she could respond, his phone buzzed. He glanced down. Sophia. Clara saw the name flash across the screen. He didn’t decline the call. “I need to take this,” he said quietly. Of course you do. Clara nodded once and walked out of the conference room, each step steadier than the storm inside her chest. As she reached her desk, she made a decision. She would not compete with a ghost. If Ethan Cole wanted her, he would have to want her loudly. Clearly. Without hesitation. Because she refused to be the woman he chose only after losing the one he loved first. Across the office, through the transparent glass walls, Clara caught a glimpse of Ethan speaking into his phone his expression unreadable. But one thing was certain. Sophia Laurent hadn’t come back just for business. And Clara had a sinking feeling that she was about to find out exactly where she stood in Ethan’s heart.
